The Twilight of the U-Boats by Bernard Edwards Pdf

“A gripping narrative” of the German submarines that nearly changed the outcome of World War II from the author of Dönitz and the Wolf Packs (Naval Review). In essence, this is the story of U-223, commanded by Karl-Jurgen Wächter from the time of her commissioning in Kiel in January 1943 through a murderous career to her eventual but dramatic demise in the Mediterranean in March 1944. At the same time, the book covers the declining fortunes of the U-boat arm as a whole from early 1943 when it seemed invincible and seriously threatened the Allies with defeat to the end of the war. “An intimate narrative, one driven by human endurance and frailty.” —Amsterdam Nautical College Newsletter

The Defeat of the Enemy Attack upon Shipping, 1939–1945 by Eric J. Grove Pdf

This book was originally published in 1957. During the First World War, German use of unrestricted submarine warfare, supported by extensive mining and surface raids, very nearly forced Britain out of the war in 1917. The island’s heavy dependence on seaborne supplies was gravely threatened again in 1939, supplemented this time by air attacks on shipping. After the war, Commanders Waters and Barley wrote a Naval Staff History which has long been recognised as an authoritative study of the impact of the German campaign and its ultimate defeat by Britain and her allies. It remains an indispensable basis for any serious study of the Battle of the Atlantic and has here been updated and revised by Dr Grove, who also contributes a perceptive introduction outlining its significance.

Submarine Operational Effectiveness in the 20th Century by Captain John F. O'Connell, USN (RET.) Pdf

The submarine emerged as a serious weapons system during the First World War (1914 - 1918). During that conflict Germany with its unrestricted submarine warfare campaign of 1917 nearly drove Great Britain to the negotiating table. Its U-boats sank 6,196 ships of 13,438,632 gross register tons. Despite post-war attempts to ban the submarine from warfare, it survived. Both Italy and Germany used submarines, covertly, during the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1939). This book, Part Two of a series, discusses the use of submarines during World War Two (1939 - 1945) and their effectiveness. It focuses principally on two strategic submarine campaigns. The first is about German U-boats against British and neutral commerce. That campaign finally failed during the Battle of The Atlantic in 1943. The second deals with American submarines against Japanese shipping from Southeast Asia to the home islands, a campaign that successfully isolated Japan from its sources of raw materials and foodstuffs during 1944 and effectively defeated Japan.

The U-boat Century by Jak P. Mallmann Showell Pdf

The U-boat was one of the most potent weapons of the twentieth century, and in this book one of the world's leading U-boat historians explains how the German submarine was developed and designed and then deployed to wreak havoc in European waters and further afield in the Atlantic and Far East. This is not a dry technical study but a work that looks behind the scenes at the men who built and fought in them. While the boats themselves are described, Mallmann Showell paints a broader picture of life in the U-boat arm. Weapons systems, operational areas, bases, builders and fleet organization are covered, and as well as dealing with the world wars, the author covers today's German navy and brings the story up to date with a full description of the third, latest generation of U-boats. The text is augmented by some 400 photographs, many never before published. The book's publication coincides with the centenary of the launch of Germany's first U-boat in August 1906. It is an essential addition to the library of every modern naval historian and enthusiast.

The Cruel Sea Retold by Bernard Edwards Pdf

Bernard Edwards recounts the history that Nicholas Monsarrat used as the basis of his famous adventure novel, The Cruel Sea, which tells the tale of British ships trying to evade destruction by U-boat wolf packs hunting them in the North Atlantic. This work--a factual retelling--describes the actions of the three British convoys featured in the novel, first detailing the experiences of Convoy OG 71 when it attempted to sail from Liverpool to Gibraltar on 14 August 1941 with twenty-two merchantmen and eight escorts. During the trip, ten ships were lost without a single U-boat being sunk, and the convoy had to seek refuge in Lisbon. A month later, Convoy HG 73 sailed from Gibraltar with twenty-five merchantmen and thirteen escorts. Ten more ships were lost and only one U-boat was damaged. British fortunes began to improve when Convoy HG 76 sailed from Gibraltar in December with thirty-one merchantmen and a heavy escort of fifteen warships. During a six-day running battle, five U-boats were sunk and seven British ships lost.

British Submarines 1939–45 by Innes McCartney Pdf

The submarine was the invisible but formidable weapon of the Royal Navy during World War II. This book examines the three major classes – 'S', 'T' and 'U' – detailing their design, development and modification. The major submarine engagements of the war are recounted, including the Norwegian campaign, the battle of Malta in March 1942, Operation Pedestal, and many other engagements in all theatres between the British subs, German U-Boats and Japanese subs. Using many previously unpublished sources and his own extensive underwater explorations, Innes McCartney gives a highly detailed account of the British submarine.
