British Film Actors' Credits, 1895-1987 by Scott Palmer Pdf

There are nearly 5,000 performers listed here, along with a quarter of a million film titles. The book is divided into two parts; the sound era, which has most of the entries, and the silent era, with about 700 names. Actors listed in this second section made no appearances after 1928. Actors whose careers spanned both talking films (which began in Britain in 1929) and silents are listed in the larger first section. Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Australian, Canadian, South African, and other British Commonwealth performers are included; British-born actors whose films were made outside the United Kingdom (as in Hollywood) and those born in foreign countries who filmed in Britain are also included. Birth and death dates are given when they could be traced. A brief character description is followed by the list of films, in chronological order. Original film titles and the year they were completed are also included.

John Mills and British Cinema by Gill Plain Pdf

Although his film career extended from the early days of sound to the British New Wave and beyond, Sir John Mills is nonetheless remembered as the archetypal hero of the Second World War. Regarded as an English 'everyman', his performances crossed the class divide and, in his easy transition from below decks to above, he came to represent a newly democratic masculine ideal. But what was this exemplary masculinity and what became of it in the aftermath of war? John Mills and British Cinema asks how was it possible for an actor to embody national identity and, by exploring the cultural contexts in which Mills and the nation became synonymous, the book offers a new perspective on 40 years of cinema and social change. Through detailed analysis of a wide range of classic British films, John Mills and British Cinema exposes the shifting constructions of 'national' masculinity, arguing that the screen persona of the actor is a fundamental, and often overlooked, dimension of British cinema.

Historical Dictionary of British Cinema by Alan Burton,Steve Chibnall Pdf

British cinema has been around from the very birth of motion pictures, from black-and-white to color, from talkies to sound, and now 3D, it has been making a major contribution to world cinema. Many of its actors and directors have stayed at home but others ventured abroad, like Charlie Chaplin and Alfred Hitchcock. Today it is still going strong, the only real competition to Hollywood, turning out films which appeal not only to Brits, just think of Bridget Jones, while busily adding to franchises like James Bond and Harry Potter. So this Historical Dictionary of British Cinema has a lot of ground to cover. This it does with over 300 dictionary entries informing us about significant actors, producers and directors, outstanding films and serials, organizations and studios, different films genres from comedy to horror, and memorable films, among other things. Two appendixes provide lists of award-winners. Meanwhile, the chronology covers over a century of history. These parts provide the details, countless details, while the introduction offers the big story. And the extensive bibliography points toward other sources of information.

Melody in the Dark by Adrian Wright Pdf

A comprehensive reassessment of British musical films 1946-1972 including King's Rhapsody, Beat Girl, The Tommy Steele Story, Rock You Sinners, The Golden Disc, and Oliver! Acting as a sequel to Adrian Wright's Cheer Up! British Musical Films, 1929-1945 (Boydell, 2020), Melody in the Dark offers the first major reassessment of the British musical film from the end of Second World War up to the beginning of the 1970s. In the immediate post-war world, British studios sought to reflect fast-changing social attitudes as they struggled to create inventive diversions in an effort to rival American competition. Hollywood stars Errol Flynn, Vera-Ellen, Jayne Mansfield and Judy Garland were among those brought in to provide Hollywood glamour. Embedded in the British consciousness, the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan were represented in three productions. Studios occasionally attempted adaptations of British stage musicals, among them King's Rhapsody and Expresso Bongo, and sexploitation movies turned musical via Secrets of a Windmill Girl and Beat Girl. It was left to minor studios to acknowledge the impact of rock'n'roll on social change in three early films, The Tommy Steele Story, Rock You Sinners and the iconic The Golden Disc. Through the sixties, British cinema seemed intent on flooding the market with entertainments promoting pop singers and rock groups such as Cliff Richard, Billy Fury and The Beatles. Towards the end of the period, it aspired to more grandiose projects such as Oliver! and Oh! What a Lovely War.

Cheer Up! by Adrian Wright Pdf

Who will remember 'Our Gracie' waving goodbye; Jack Buchanan constantly bumping into Elsie Randolph; Bobby Howes celebrating the invention of the Belisha Beacon, doing a cat duet with Wylie Watson and giving ideas to Rene Ray about ham sandwiches; John Wood and Claire Luce climbing the steps of the lighthouse and breathing on windows in Over She Goes, these accompanied by some of the most deft British and American composers of their time, their work lighter and freer than air. We catch those airs still, breathing on windows and wondering what became of it all. Book jacket.

In the Garden by Angelica Shirley Carpenter Pdf

This book is a collection of articles about the life and work of Frances Hodgson Burnett. The broad range of subjects and the varied backgrounds of the contributing authors are a tribute to Burnett's wide and international appeal. The book includes articles by three Burnett biographers, criticism of Burnett's works, and literary and social analysis of her books by scholars from several countries. These range from Pulitzer Prize winner Alison Lurie to new scholars who are being published here for the first time. The articles range from essays to transcripts of interviews and speeches and a filmography. The book presents new research on films and plays based on Burnett books. The primary organization of the essays is chronological, but the book is also arranged to reflect the structure of the 'Frances Hodgson Burnett: Beyond the Secret Garden Conference, ' held at California State University, Fresno, April 25-27, 2003
