Broken Cisterns by Sarah Ivill Pdf

Today many of us are figuratively drinking from broken cisterns that hold no water. Rather than finding satisfaction in God, the Fountain of living waters, we seek to satisfy ourselves with the broken cisterns of this world, and we remain discontented. In Broken Cisterns , Sarah Ivill exposes these broken cisterns—addictions to things like social media, physical appearance, shopping, sex, and others. She helps us understand why we are drawn to these things and how dangerous it is to seek contentment in them. Using Scripture, she also gently and practically leads us to the Fountain of living waters, who will transform our hearts and eternally satisfy our thirst. Table of Contents: Part One: Broken Cisterns Lead To... 1. An Imperfect World 2. Disorder, Discontentment, and Death 3. Impure Passions and Incorrect doctrine 4. Broken Cisterns by Francis Schaffer Pdf

"Taken from Jeremiah 2:13, the author contends that the Church has made the same mistake as ancient Israel in forsaking God, the "fountain of living waters," and building "broken cisterns" to take His place.

Living Waters or Broken Cisterns by Paul Veach Pdf

Substitution. This is the great sin of the Israelites in the Old Testament. In Jeremiah 2:13, God states that they had committed two evils. They had forsaken God, "the fountain of living waters," and had replaced Him with broken cisterns, "which can hold no water." This is also the great sin of the Laodicean Church and the average church member in America today; God calls them wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. What happened? In both cases, the average "believer" had substituted the power of the Holy Spirit for acts of religion. In the average church, focus is on activity, pounding ungodly rock music, and "excitement"-all of which gets the blood pumping and the heart beating fast, but is a work of the flesh nonetheless. God also called the Laodicean Church member lukewarm. The actual temperature of lukewarm is 98 degrees, near the natural body temperature. Lukewarm is a production of the flesh in worship. This book serves as both a warning and as a teaching tool to instruct honest seekers yearning to live a life in the power of the Holy Spirit. It's not only necessary, but is what God expects of a true Christian. The choice is yours: living waters...or broken cisterns.

Sexual and Marital Metaphors in Hosea, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Ezekiel by Sharon Moughtin-Mumby Pdf

Sharon Moughtin-Mumby considers the often unrecognised impact of different approaches to metaphor on readings of the prophtic sexual and marital metaphorical language. She outlines a practical and consciously simplified approach to metaphor, placing strong emphasis on the influence of literary context on metaphorical meaning. Drawing on this approach, she read Hosea 4-14, Jeremiah 2:1-4:4, Isaiah, Ezekiel 16 and 23, and Hosea 1-3 with fresh eyes. Her lucid new readings reveal the way in which scholarship has repeatedly stifled the prophetic metaphorical language by reading it within the 'default contexts' of 'the marriage metaphor' and 'cultic prostitution', which for so many years have been simply assumed. Readers are encouraged instead to read these diverse metaphors and similes within their distinctive literary contexts in which they have the potential to rise vividly to life, provoking the question: how are we to respond to these disquieting, powerful texts in the midst of the Hebrew Bible?

Newton on the Christian Life by Tony Reinke Pdf

John Newton is best known as the slave trader turned hymn writer who penned the most popular English hymn in history: “Amazing Grace.” However, many Christians are less familiar with the decades he spent in relative obscurity, laboring as a “spiritual doctor” while pastoring small parishes in England. In the latest addition to Crossway’s growing Theologians on the Christian Life series, Tony Reinke introduces modern readers to Newton’s pastoral wisdom by leading them through the many sermons, hymns, and—most importantly—letters that he wrote over the course of his life. Considered by many to be one of the greatest letter writers of all time, Newton has valuable insights to offer modern Christians, especially when it comes to fusing together sound doctrine, lived experience, and godly practice. Part of the Theologians on the Christian Life series.

Expositions of Holy Scripture: Isaiah and Jeremiah by Alexander MacLaren Pdf

More of a series of sermons than a proper commentary, these sermons help to illustrate the powerful word that God was speaking to Israel through the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah. Although this work does not just pull scripture from these two respective prophets, but rather from all over the Bible, MacLaren is able to take different texts to make a clear and coherent whole.
