Brothers in Berets: the Evolution of Air Force Special Tactics, 1953-2003 - Combat Controller Teams (CCT), Bravery in Vietnam, Iran Hostage Rescue, Grenada, Panama, Balkans, Somalia, and Afghanistan by U. S. Military,Department of Defense (DoD),Forrest L. Marion,Air Force History and Museums Program,U. S. Government Pdf

This superb and comprehensive history explores the evolution and contributions of the Battlefield Airmen assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) special tactics units over 50 years. "Their story deserves telling within the US Air Force and to the general public," notes Gen John Jumper, USAF, retired. Battlefield Airmen core competencies include performing duties primarily on the ground, often "outside the wire," and under austere conditions-all skills needed for carrying the fight to the enemy on the ground. The AFSOC special tactics community is a small brotherhood of highly trained and equally dedicated warriors consisting of special tactics officers and combat controllers, combat rescue officers and pararescuemen, and officer and enlisted special operations weathermen. They have proven themselves as force multipliers time and time again throughout their history in places like Somalia, Serbia, and the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq.1 * From Pathfinders to Combat Controllers, 1943-1954 * 2 * Combat Control, 1955-1964 * 3 * The Conflict in Southeast Asia, 1961-1975 * 4 * Combat Control and US National Counterterrorism, 1976-1981 * 5 * From Grenada to Special Tactics, 1981-1987 * 6 * First Fight: Special Tactics in Panama, 1989 * 7 * Special Tactics Evolves and Deploys to Southwest Asia, 1986-1992 * 8 * The Battle of Mogadishu: Special Tactics in Somalia, 1993 * 9 * Special Tactics, 1993-1999: At Home and in the Balkans * 10 * Beginning the Long War: Special Tactics at Home and Abroad, 1999-May 2003In Sicily and Italy in 1943, the US Army began employing small teams of personnel known as "Pathfinders" on the drop zones intended for use in Allied airborne operations against the Axis powers. The Pathfinders' role was to set up their equipment shortly before the arrival of the first paratrooper-laden aircraft over the drop zone in order to guide the aircraft to the proper location. This early system met with mixed results. Shortly after the US Air Force was established in 1947, it gained the Pathfinder mission from the Army, but it was 1953 before the first Air Force combat control team (CCT) was formed (chapter 1). For most of the 1950s the Eighteenth Air Force, headquartered at Donaldson AFB, South Carolina, served as the nucleus for Air Force combat control. However, the USAF--and even the Eighteenth Air Force leadership--anticipated a not-too-distant future with electronic aids to navigation rendering the men on the ground unnecessary for guiding aircraft to their targets. The small Air Force specialty survived the decade even as the US Army sought to recapture the Pathfinder function that it viewed as properly its own (chapter 2). From the early 1960s to 1975, the Southeast Asia conflict gave CCTs their first combat experience, furthering several legendary careers in the process (chapter 3). In the wake of Israel's dramatic hostage rescue in July 1976 at Entebbe, Uganda, the US government began developing its own national counterterrorist capability. At that point entered a hard-charging, charismatic, and visionary combat control officer, John "Coach" Carney, whose small CCT played a key role in April 1980 at Desert One. Carney's team almost certainly prevented a greater loss than what took place in the desert that night. The failed operation's silver lining was the Pentagon's decision to develop joint special operations capabilities (chapter 4). The brief Grenada operation in 1983 showed that much work remained to be done and served as the catalyst for Special Tactics, initiated in the mid1980s with the merging of combat control and pararescue specialists in the unit later designated the 24th Special Tactics Squadron.

Beneath the Basque Beret by Nicolas Ardanaz Pdf

Beneath the Basque Beret chronicles the life of Santiago Echeverría, a Basque Resistance fighter who dreams of democratic independence for his homeland. When his father is executed by a fascist colonel, Santiago and his brother, Miguel, avenge his death. Pursued by Franco’s military, the brothers make a daring escape to France. But just when it looks like their fortunes are changing, they are tracked down by the French gendarmes. Through a network of Basque sympathizers, Santiago escapes in a ship to Canada, hides out at a logging camp in northern Québec and eventually settles in Montréal. When the Spanish Civil War ends and Franco seizes power, Santiago learns that the ruthless dictator is continuing the genocide of thousands of Basques that began with the sadistic bombing of Guernica by Hitler’s Airforce. Santiago returns to Spain planning to assassinate his father’s killer and to join a growing underground movement to stop the mass executions and oppression. He had always been taught that it was better to die on your feet than to live on your knees. But as he and his comrades begin to close in on Franco himself, they may in fact be bringing themselves even closer to the garotte, fearing neither torture nor death.

Three Wise Men by Beau Wise,Tom Sileo Pdf

From Beau Wise and Tom Sileo comes Three Wise Men, an incredible memoir of family, service and sacrifice by a Marine who lost both his brothers in combat—becoming the only "Sole Survivor" during the war in Afghanistan. Three Wise Men details the fate of three brothers intertwined when they voluntarily enlisted in defending their homeland after the devastating 9/11 attacks. Their extraordinary tale unfurls the severe toll of the Afghan war, particularly on a single family, underscoring the profound significance of the sacrifice and the indomitable resilience of a family's courage. While serving in Afghanistan, US Navy SEAL veteran and CIA contractor Jeremy Wise was killed in an al Qaeda suicide bombing that devastated the US intelligence community. Less than three years later, US Army Green Beret sniper Ben Wise was fatally wounded after volunteering for a dangerous assignment during a firefight with the Taliban. Ben was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, while Jeremy received the Intelligence Star—one of the rarest awards bestowed by the U.S. government—and also a star on the CIA’s Memorial Wall. The legacy of their sacrifice lives on in Beau Wise's account, the only “Sole Survivor” pulled from the battlefield, forging an enduring testament to the value of loyalty, service, and familial bonds.

Brother from a Box by Evan Kuhlman Pdf

One new brother--assembly required. A "page-turner filled with fun, intrigue, and suspense" (Kirkus Reviews) from the author of The Last Invisible Boy. Matt Rambeau is officially a big brother--to a robot Matt's super-computer-genius dad is always getting cool tech stuff in the mail, but the latest box Matt opens contains the most impressive thing he's ever seen: a bionically modified lifeform that looks human and calls Matt "brother" (in French) Norman turns out to be a bit of an attention hog and a showoff, but Matt's still psyched to have a robotic sibling--even if he flirts with (ugh) girls. Then strange things start to happen. First a computer worm causes Norman to go berserk, and then odd men start showing up in unusual places. Matt soon realizes that someone is trying to steal the robot--correction--his brother In this zany, action-packed story with spies, skateboards, and plenty of artificial intelligence, acclaimed author Evan Kuhlman gets to the heart (and motherboard) of one of the most special relationships known to man (or machine): brotherhood.

Niger Delta: The Business of the Oil Curse by Marc-Antoine Pérouse de Montclos Pdf

Based on 30 years of fieldwork in the Niger Delta, this book debunks the determinism of the resource curse theory in Nigeria, Africa's leading oil producer and the most populous country on the continent. It rather shows that oil and gas production is only one element of a social problem with much deeper roots. It also investigates the role played by the youth, a key issue in a society where half of the population is under 18 years old. To understand the multiple causes of the crisis, it thus delves into the complexity of a rich history.

Unconventional Warriors by Matthew B. Hill Pdf

Tracing the "American Guerrilla" narrative through more than one hundred years of film and television, this book shows how the conventions and politics of this narrative influence Americans to see themselves as warriors, both on screen and in history. American guerrillas fight small-scale battles that, despite their implications for large-scale American victories, often go untold. This book evaluates those stories to illumine the ways in which film and television have created, reinforced, and circulated an "American Guerrilla" fantasy—a mythic narrative in which Americans, despite having the most powerful military in history, are presented as underdog resistance fighters against an overwhelming and superior occupying evil. Unconventional Warriors: The Fantasy of the American Resistance Fighter in Television and Film explains that this fantasy has occupied the center of numerous war films and in turn shaped the way in which Americans see those wars and themselves. Informed by the author's expertise on war in contemporary literature and popular culture, this book begins with an introduction that outlines the basics of the "American Guerrilla" narrative and identifies it as a recurring theme in American war films. Subsequent chapters cover one hundred years of American "guerrillas" in film and television. The book concludes with a chapter on science fiction narratives, illustrating how the conventions and politics of these stories shape even the representation of wholly fictional, imagined wars on screen.
