Brushing and Grazing Effects on Lodgepole Pine, Vascular Plants and Range Forage in Three Plant Communities in the Southern Interior of British Columbia by Suzanne Simard,Jean Heineman,Phil Youwe,British Columbia. Ministry of Forests. Research Branch Pdf

A series of research trials established in 1986-87 in the Kamloops Forest Region, British Columbia, studied the effectiveness of chemical and manual treatment methods for controlling competing vegetation, and also studied the impact that these brushing methods had on the range resource in the region. This report first describes the study methodology, including site selection, experimental design, measurements made, and statistical analyses. It then reports the results of the three studies in the series: the effects of brushing and grazing on lodgepole pine, the dry alder plant community, and range forage at the Devick Lake site; effects of brushing and grazing on lodgepole pine, the willow plant community, and range forage at the Ellis Creek site; and effects of brushing on lodgepole pine, the pinegrass plant community, and range forage at the Upper McKay Creek site.

Effects of Operational Brushing on Conifers and Plant Communities in the Southern Interior of British Columbia by Suzanne Simard,British Columbia. Ministry of Forests. Research Branch Pdf

This handbook contains information on the effects of operational brushing treatments on conifers & plant communities in the Kamloops and Nelson forest regions of British Columbia. Data were collected over a nine-year period from 96 individual PROBE (PRotocol for Operational Brushing Evaluations) trials. The first three sections present an introduction to the PROBE program, its objectives, and the research methodology. Sections 4 to 11 contain detailed analyses for eight vegetation complexes (fireweed, fern, mixed shrub, ericaceous shrub & subalpine herb, dry alder, wet alder, aspen, and mixed broadleaf/shrub complex). Each of these sections contains an abstract, an introduction, site descriptions, results, discussion, conclusions, and management implications. The final section is an overall summary and management recommendation. Appendices include information about the willow and pinegrass complexes, a summary of results for unreplicated treatments involving those communities, and summary tables of information about PROBE sites that presently represent unreplicated treatment cells.

The Effects of Site Preparation and Harvesting Practices on Planted Seedling Productivity and Microenvironment in Southern Interior Dry, Grassy IDF Forests by Jean Heineman,British Columbia. Forest Science Program,J. Heineman Forestry Consulting Pdf

Dry, pinegrass-dominated sites in the interior Douglas fir (IDF) zone of southern interior British Columbia are challenging to regenerate, despite ongoing improvements in nursery & silviculture practices. Using results from three separate studies, this report discusses conifer seedling survival & growth responses to silvicultural systems & site preparation treatments that were applied to relieve harsh site conditions at Fehr Mountain, Murray Creek, and Opax Mountain. To help interpret these responses, the effects of silvicultural system & site preparation treatments on seedling microenvironment are also analyzed with reference to the following factors: soil water, air temperature, soil temperature, light, nutrient availability, soil physical properties, and ectomycorrhizae.

Ministry of Forests,Canadian Forest Service,Canada-British Columbia Partnership Agreement on Forest Resource Development: FRDA II. Pdf

Describes a research trial established in 1986 in southern interior British Columbia to study the effectiveness of glyphosate applied at three and at six litres/hectare, and of manual cutting, to release naturally regenerated lodgepole pine seedlings and suppress dry alder complex. Pine seedlings and two target species, Sitka alder and fireweed, were assessed for the first three years and again in the ninth year following treatment. Measurements made on the seedlings included height, current-year height increment, and stem diameter at root collar. Target vegetation was assessed for species-specific percent cover and the height of one average target specimen per woody species was also measured.

Lodgepole Pine Responses to Mechanical Site Preparation and Burning in Sub-boreal British Columbia by John McClarnon Pdf

In 1988, three studies were established as part of Experimental Project 995 to study lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) survival and growth responses to site preparation in the Sub-Boreal Spruce zone of north-central British Columbia. The project examines the effectiveness of several mechanical treatments and localized high-intensity burning, with a focus on disc trenching, which is the most commonly used mechanical site preparation technique in this region. The importance of disc trench orientation, planting aspect, and planting position were investigated, as well as potential interactions between broadcast burning and disc trenching. This report presents 25-year results for the Bednesti North and Bednesti South experiments, and 19-year results for the Tanli experiment. Treatment effects are discussed in relation to: lodgepole pine establishment (survival and early growth to age 5); performance at approximately free-growing age (9 years); and early mid-term growth, stand volume, and site index (as measured at age 25). Of the mechanical treatments tested, coarse mixing was the most effective, resulting in approximately 1-m gains in lodgepole pine height over the control at age 25. This treatment is not practical from an operational perspective, however, and the more common technique of disc trenching with trees planted at the hinge produced the second greatest gains. In contrast, pine planted in trench furrows showed a trend of reduced growth relative to the control. Trench orientation was relatively unimportant, but there was a slight advantage to avoiding north-aspect planting positions. Although broadcast burning alone did not have a significant effect on pine growth, it consistently interacted with disc trenching to produce a mild magnification of responses to that treatment. Pine planted in long, narrow, intensely burned windrow strips were consistently larger than control pine throughout the 25-year assessment period, but they had poor form due to being essentially open-grown.

Long-term Effects of Cattle and Wildlife Grazing on Grassland Plant Community Recovery in the East Kootenay Region of British Columbia by Brian M. Wikeem,Reg F. Newman,Timothy James Ross Pdf

In this project, vegetation plots were re-sampled at all sites that were established in 1991 by the East Kootenay Trench Agriculture Wildlife Committee (EKTAW) Vegetation Monitoring Program to determine the implications of 18 years of wildlife and cattle grazing on the sites. The specific objectives of the project were to: evaluate plant community response over time in grazed and ungrazed areas at each site with emphasis on key species of ecological and management importance in the region; and determine the differential effects of wild ungulate versus cattle grazing on these sites.--Document.

Effects of Intensive Fertilization on the Foliar Nutrition and Growth of Young Lodgepole Pine Forests in the British Columbia Interior by Robert Peter Brockley Pdf

Beginning in 1992, the British Columbia Ministry of Forests established a small network of lodgepole pine and interior spruce nutrient optimization research installations on representative sites within three major biogeoclimatic (BEC) zones in the British Columbia Interior. The objectives of the long-term "maximum productivity" study are to (1) compare the effects of different regimes and frequencies of repeated fertilization on the foliar nutrition, growth, and development of young interior forests, and (2) determine the effects of large nutrient additions on above- and below-ground timber and non-timber resources. This report examines the effects of repeated fertilization on foliar nutrition and tree- and stand-level growth and development over 12 years at the five lodgepole pine study sites.--Document.

Effects of Repeated Fertilization on Forest Floor and Mineral Soil Properties in Young Lodgepole Pine and Spruce Forests in Central British Columbia by Robert Peter Brockley,Paul Thomas Sanborn Pdf

Experimental Project (EP) 886.13 Maximizing the Productivity of Lodgepole Pine and Spruce in the Interior of British Columbia was implemented by the B.C. Ministry of Forests Research Branch in 1992 to examine the potential to dramatically improve the productivity of interior forests by permanently alleviating nutritional growth constraints. Nine area-based field installations (six pine and three spruce) were established on representative sites within three biogeoclimatic zones between 1992 and 1999. The growth and yield objectives of the "maximum productivity" study are to compare the effects of different regimes and frequencies of repeated fertilization on forest growth and development and to determine optimum fertilization regimes for maximizing stand volume production. In addition, several companion studies have been undertaken at selected sites to determine the long-term effects of large nutrient additions on above- and belowground timber and non-timber forest resources. The purpose of this report is to examine the 12-year effects of repeated fertilization on forest floor and mineral soil properties at two study sites (one pine and one spruce) in central British Columbia.--Document.

Responses of Plant Communities to Grazing in the Southwestern United States : by Daniel G. Milchunas Pdf

Grazing by wild and domestic mammals can have small to large effects on plant communities, depending on characteristics of the particular community and of the type and intensity of grazing. The broad objective of this report was to extensively review literature on the effects of grazing on 25 plant communities of the southwestern U.S. in terms of plant species composition, aboveground primary productivity, and root and soil attributes. Livestock grazing management and grazing systems are assessed, as are effects of small and large native mammals and feral species, when data are available. Emphasis is placed on the evolutionary history of grazing and productivity of the particular communities as determinants of response. After reviewing available studies for each community type, we compare changes in species composition with grazing among community types. Comparisons are also made between southwestern communities with a relatively short history of grazing and communities of the adjacent Great Plains with a long evolutionary history of grazing. Evidence for grazing as a factor in shifts from grasslands to shrublands is considered. An appendix outlines a new community classification system, which is followed in describing grazing impacts in prior sections.

Competitive Effects of Trembling Aspen on Lodgepole Pine Performance in the SBS and IDF Zones of the Cariboo-Chilcotin Region of South-central British Columbia by Teresa A. Newsome,Amanda Frances Linnell Nemec,Jean Heineman,British Columbia. Forest Science Program Pdf

This report describes & presents results of a retrospective study carried out between 1992 and 1999 in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of British Columbia to quantify the effects of trembling aspen competition on lodgepole pine performance, and to identify competition indices or other measures of competition that could be used by field staff. Target pine were selected across neighbourhoods in six stands with varying densities of aspen. Data pertaining to pine size & condition, and to the size & location of aspen within a 70-inch radius of the pine were collected three times. Measurements began when the stands were seven to 12 years old. Various approaches are used to identify levels of aspen abundance when pine performance declined below acceptable levels. These include analyses of regression & correlation, tests of existing competition indices, and visual & statistical characterization of trends. Finally, conservative recommendations are made for the retention of aspen within pine stands in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region.
