Flowing Traces by James H. Sanford,William R. LaFleur,Masatoshi Nagatomi Pdf

According to the contributors to this volume, the relationship of Buddhism and the arts in Japan is less the rendering of Buddhist philosophical ideas through artistic imagery than it is the development of concepts and expressions in a virtually inseparable unity. By challenging those who consider religion to be the primary phenomenon and art the secondary arena for the apprehension of religious meanings, these essays reveal the collapse of other dichotomies as well. Touching on works produced at every social level, they explore a fascinating set of connections within Japanese culture and move to re-envision such usual distinctions as religion and art, sacred and secular, Buddhism and Shinto, theory and substance, elite and popular, and even audience and artist. The essays range from visual and literary hagiographies to No drama, to Sermon-Ballads, to a painting of the Nirvana of Vegetables. The contributors to the volume are James H. Foard, Elizabeth ten Grotenhuis, Frank Hoff, Laura S. Kaufman, William R. LaFleur, Susan Matisoff, Barbara Ruch, Yoshiaki Shimizu, and Royall Tyler. Originally published in 1992. Faith and Power in Japanese Buddhist Art, 1600–2005 by Patricia J. Graham Pdf

Faith and Power in Japanese Buddhist Art explores the transformation of Buddhism from the premodern to the contemporary era in Japan and the central role its visual culture has played in this transformation. Although Buddhism is generally regarded as peripheral to modern Japanese society, this book demonstrates otherwise. Its chapters elucidate the thread of change over time in the practice of Buddhism as revealed in temple worship halls and other sites of devotion and in imagery representing the religion’s most popular deities and religious practices. It also introduces the work of modern and contemporary artists who are not generally associated with institutional Buddhism and its canonical visual requirements but whose faith inspires their art. The author makes a persuasive argument that the neglect of these materials by scholars results from erroneous presumptions about the aesthetic superiority of early Japanese Buddhist artifacts and an asserted decline in the institutional power of the religion after the sixteenth century. She demonstrates that recent works constitute a significant contribution to the history of Japanese art and architecture, providing evidence of Buddhism’s compelling presence at all levels of Japanese society and its evolution in response to the needs of new generations of supporters.

Hiraizumi by Mimi Hall Yiengpruksawan Pdf

In the twelfth century, along the borders of the Japanese state in northern Honshu, three generations of local rulers built a capital city at Hiraizumi that became a major military and commercial center. Known as the Hiraizumi Fujiwara, these rulers created a city filled with art, in an attempt to use the power of art and architecture to claim a religious and political mandate. In the first book-length study of Hiraizumi in English, the author studies the rise of the Hiraizumi Fujiwara and analyzes their remarkable construction program. She traces the strategies by which the Hiraizumi Fujiwara attempted to legitimate their rule and grounds the splendor of Hiraizumi in the desires, political and personal, of the men and women who sponsored and displayed that art.

Shintō by Victor Harris Pdf

Shinto, the Way of the Gods, was the religion of Japan before the arrival of Buddhism from Korea during the 6th century AD. Central to Shinto beliefs are the kami, animistic gods perceived in all aspects of nature. They exist in the nooks and crannies of houses and inhabit streams, trees and mountains, while others are sacred to human activities such as agriculture and arts and crafts. The principle rites of appeasing the gods - considered essential to a stable society - include acts of cleansing, gratitude, tolerance and obedience to tradition.

Buddhist Art in Its Relation to Buddhist Ideals, With Special Reference to Buddhism in Japan by Masaharu Anesaki Pdf

Excerpt from Buddhist Art in Its Relation to Buddhist Ideals, With Special Reference to Buddhism in Japan: Four Lectures Given at the Museum In Sanskrit and Pali, the vowels are pronounced as in Italian or Spanish; s and s are soft, something like sh in English; d and t are pure lingual consonants, not dental as in English; n is also a pure lingual consonant, - not nasal; th and dh are pronounced like the italicized letters in the phrases 'hit hard' and hard hit' respectively. In Chinese, according to Wade's system of transliteration, a is usually long as in 'father'; e short as in 'yet'; e, much like the vowel sound in the German 'schon, ' except before n, when it is like the vowel sound in 'sun'; ilong as in 'machine, ' except before n, when it is short as in 'pin'; 0 not quite so broad as the 'aw' in 'saw'; u like the vowel sound in 'too, ' except before n, when it resembles the vowel sound in 'look'; it like the French 'u' in 'du'; ii, something like the vowel sound in the first syllable of 'surround'; on, something like the vowel sound in 'foe'; ai as in 'aisle'; ei like the vowel sound in 'say'; in other vowel combinations each letter retains its original force; ch is hard as in 'church'; j is soft like the s in vision'; hs approximately like 'sh' in English. The inverted comma in T'ang, Ch'an and other words indicates a gentle aspirate. In Japanese the vowels are sounded as in Italian or Spanish. Each member of a diphthong or other vowel combination retains its original force, and the important distinction between a long and a short vowel results from duration of utterance rather than from any change in sound. The consonants are pronounced approximately as in English. G is hard as in 'give, ' and double consonants should be pronounced really double, as in 'shot - tower' or 'cock-crow.' There is practically no tonic accent, though. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
