Environmental Law for the Construction Industry by Amanda Stubbs,Christopher Dering Pdf

Environmental Law for the Construction Industry is an introduction to the wide subject of environmental law as it affects the construction industry. Changes in the structure of contracting arrangements have meant that those traditionally concerned with the construction process must now take greater interest in environmental law. In addition there is now a mass of regulation, governing matters such as waste management, water pollution, noise and other nuisances that have to be adhered to in practice. Readers will be provided with a broad outline of the legal and regulatory framework and a summary of the principle duties, which result from the legal regime. This essential book offers the ability to understand the requirements that the law imposes and, in individual cases, whether they face a problem with which they should be concerned. In addition, the book offers some thoughts on insurance and financing considerations, and some suggestions on managing an environmental crisis, including dealing with regulatory inspectors and protest actions. To reflect the changes and developments in the law, this new edition has been modified and supplemented in a number of areas to increase the clarity of its exposition and to add further useful information. All chapters previously covered have been fully revised and updated, with a new chapter 9, which examines crisis management in the context of environmental matters such as pollution events and protest actions. Environmental Law for the Construction Industry: 2nd Edition provides a quick reference manual with a user-friendly summary intended to simplify some of the complexity and confusion that surrounds this area of law. Environmental Law for the Construction Industry: 2nd Edition is aimed primarily at contractors, although it will clearly be relevant to all those within the construction industry who have some level of responsibility for, or interest in, environmental issues.

Building Governance and Climate Change by Richard Lorch,Jacques Laubscher,Edwin Hon-wan Chan,Henk Visscher Pdf

The contribution of buildings to climate change is widely acknowledged. This book investigates how building regulatory systems are addressing the current and future effects of climate change, and how these systems can be improved. After presenting a comprehensive overview of how the current building regulatory system developed, some of the inadequacies are identified. The largest part of the book examines the potential for innovative policy solutions to address the real world problem of mitigating and adapting buildings to climate change. This publication contributes significantly to our understanding of the complexities of long-term energy efficiency in buildings. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Building Research & Information journal.

Building Regulations applying to electrical and gas installation and repairs in dwellings by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee Pdf

Labelling on electrical equipment sold by DIY stores must be used to warn that it is illegal for an unregistered person to carry out most electrical works in the home. In addition, public awareness about the risk of the odourless, invisible and potentially lethal carbon monoxide fumes must be raised to increase safety in the home. When it comes to gas and electrical safety, the Committee concludes that far too many homeowners do not appreciate either the dangers of using sub-standard engineers or their own liability when it comes to faulty gas and electrical work. The Government must co-ordinate a concerted effort by key industry organisations to raise public awareness levels on these crucial issues. To that end the Committee recommends that sockets and other electrical equipment sold by DIY stores for electrical installations should carry a health warning that it is illegal for an unregistered person to carry out most electrical works in the home without checks being completed meeting the requirements of the Building Control service. The Committee will be writing to all the big electrical/DIY stores to highlight this key recommendation. In its current consultation exercise into Building Regulations, the Government has examined further deregulation of Part P, which focuses on electrical installation and repair. The Committee highlights how evidence gathered since the introduction of these rules demonstrated that deaths and injuries due to electrical faults have decreased. De-regulation can only be supported if there was clear evidence that safety standards would not suffer, but such evidence has not been provided by the Government.

Green Buildings and the Law by Julie Adshead Pdf

In countries such as the UK, the energy used in constructing, occupying and operating buildings represents approximately fifty percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Pressure to improve the environmental performance of buildings during both construction and occupancy, particularly to reduce carbon emissions from buildings, has become intense. Understandably, legislation and regulation are driving green development and compliance. And this is happening in a wide variety of ways. This review of the law in key jurisdictions for the research community, lawyers, the construction industry and government examines some of the mechanisms in place – from the more traditional building regulation controls to green leases and the law relating to buildings and their natural environment. Members of the CIB TG69 research group on ‘Green Buildings and the Law’ review aspects of the law relating to green development in a range of jurisdictions.
