Building the Canadian West - The Land and Colonization Policies of the Canadian Pacific Railway by James B. Hedges Pdf

BUILDING THE CANADIAN WEST- THE LAND AND COLONIZATION POLICIES OF THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY by IAMES B. HEDGES. Originally published in 1939. PREFACE: pages which follow are the outgrowth o the author's earlier studies of the influence of the railway upon the settle ment of the Northwestern States of the United States. Those inves tigations aroused his interest in the role played by that same agency to the north of the 4gth parallel, where in the Prairie Provinces approximately one-fifth of the total land area alienated by the Dominion Government was granted to the Canadian Pacific and its subsidiaries. The scale of that company's operations, combined with the completeness of its records, seemed to offer an unusual opportunity for a study of the railway as a colonizer. The term Canadian West is here used to denominate the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta in which the Dominion subsidy lands of the Canadian Pacific were located. Only incidental attention has been given to British Columbia, where the Company at various times owned subsidy lands obtained from the Province, but where its work of promoting agricultural settlement was much less notable than on the Prairies. The work has been projected against the background of the American frontier and American experience. Parallel and contrast ing developments on the two sides of the imaginary boundary line have been kept constantly in mind and it is believed that events in each area take on a new significance when viewed in the light of those in the other. Grateful acknowledgment is made to various officials of the Cana dian Pacific who facilitated the search for materials, and especially to Mr. Ashley Edwards, whose unflagging interest and indefatigable energy proved equal to every obstacle; to Mr. H. E. Hume, formerly Chairman of the Dominion Lands Board of the Department of the Interior, Ottawa, who placed his vast fund of information at the author's disposal; to officials of the Parliamentary Library, Ottawa, for numerous courtesies; to the Harvard University Press for per mission to use in Chapters II and III material which appeared in the writer's Federal Railway Land Subsidy Policy of Canada ( Cambridge, 1934); to the Social Science Research Council for grants-in aid which made possible the gathering o the material for the volume; to my colleague, Professor Robert H. George, for helpful suggestions with respect to the maps; and to Miss Louise Waitt who has repeatedly typed large portions of the manuscript. JAMES B. HEDGES PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND August, 1939. Settling the Canadian-American West, 1890-1915 by John William Bennett Pdf

This “anthropological history” tells the story of homesteading and community organization in the Canadian-American West through personal reminiscences and locally written histories. John W. Bennett and Seena B. Kohl interpret those stories through the lenses of history and social science, and they present a view of settlement experience as one phase of the evolving postfrontier society and culture of western North America. Settling the Canadian-American West, 1890–1915 contains a synthesis of Canadian and U.S. settlement experiences giving, to the extent possible, equal space to both sides of the international boundary. The experiences of people in these adjacent territories were virtually identical, with emigrant populations from the same countries and socioeconomic strata. Among other aspects of the homesteading experience, the authors explore the “interactive adaptation” that developed in the West. Networks of mutual aid, reverently remembered by the voices found in these pages, eased the inevitable hardships.

Finding Directions West by Heather Devine Pdf

Western Canada has figured historically as a focus point for new directions in human thought and action, migrations of the mind and body, and personal journeys of both a substantial and transcendental nature. The essays in Finding Directions West interrogate the meaning of those journeys, their reality, their memory, and their constructed identities within Western Canada itself. The book situates landscapes and peopled places in the West within the larger study of Western Canada and its transborder relationships. It draws scholars from a vareity of disciplines within history, from gender studies, to museum studies, to environmental history, in order to examine afresh Western Canada as a place for finding new directions in the human experience.

Barns of Western Canada by Bob Hainstock Pdf

Western Canada is home to an amazing range of barn styles. Settlers from all over the world brought their unique methods of barn-building with them, creating a picturesque legacy of farm architecture. The construction of these buildings is intertwined with the settlement of the west and with the memories of those who live in or visit the area. Bob Hainstock collected photographs and stories of western barns for many years while working as a photographer for the Manitoba Co-operator. His two year feature series on barns drew a tremendous response from readers and barn enthusiasts. This book was the result. Over 150 color and black & white photographs combine with detailed information on the history, construction, and significance of barns in the western landscape to form a book as beautiful as it is engaging.
