Practical Farm Buildings: Plans and Suggestions by Andrew Frederick Hunter Pdf
"Farm-building plans are as variable, almost, as is the individuality of those building and using them, and in making this selection, we have been guided by the practical merits of the designs, including only such as have proved their value by constant use on the farm. In poultry buildings it has been our special purpose to present plans which illustrate the marked tendency of recent years, which has been to open up the houses to sunshine and fresh air; a tendency which makes conditions more wholesome and promotes the good health and greater profitableness of the flocks." This book contains illustrations and plans for the construction of various structures that would be found on the average farm.

Rural Architecture - Description of Farm Houses, Cottages, and Out Buildings by Lewis Falley Allen Pdf
The writer of these pages ought, perhaps, to apologize for attempting a work on a subject, of which he is not a professional master, either in design or execution. In the science of Farm buildings he claims no better knowledge than a long practical observation has given him. The thoughts herein submitted for the consideration of those interested in the subject of Farm buildings are the result of that observation, added to his experience in the use of such buildings, and a conviction of the inconveniences attending many of those already planned and erected. Nor is it intended, in the production of this work, to interfere with the labors of the professional builder. To such builder all who may be disposed to adopt any model or suggestion here presented, are referred, for the various details, in their specifications, and estimates, that may be required; presuming that the designs and descriptions of this work will be sufficient for the guidance of any master builder, in their erection and completion. iv But for the solicitation of those who believe that the undersigned could offer some improvements in the construction of Farm buildings for the benefit of our landholders and practical farmers, these pages would probably never have appeared. They are offered in the hope that they may be useful in assisting to form the taste, and add to the comfort of those who are the main instruments in embellishing the face of our country in its most pleasing and agreeable features—the American Farmer. LEWIS F. ALLEN.

Discovering Traditional Farm Buildings by J.E.C. Peters Pdf
Farm buildings form an important element in the landscape, whether they are found in villages or hamlets, or are isolated in the countryside. In their design they reflect the differences in types and methods of farming between one area and another and between different periods of history. They thus provide valuable material evidence for agricultural history. However, the old buildings are generally not suited to modern farming methods. A great many have been converted to houses or some other use, others have been modified, or demolished or left to decay. The need to study and record what is left is therefore very urgent. The traditional farmstead was composed of a number of different buildings, each with its own characteristic features and each serving a different purpose. This book looks at the purely agricultural buildings in turn, so that each can be recognised, as a barn, a cowhouse, a stable and so on; the house is ignored, being a subject on its own. The buildings are looked at as you would approach them, noting first the features visible from outside, then those seen inside, and only finally the plan. The book also looks, more briefly, at the way buildings are grouped together.
