Excerpt from Bulbous Irises [The following contains the substance of the lecture as given, though I have somewhat expanded and variously modified what I actually said; and I have added a detailed description of the several species. I am much indebted to the editors of the Gardeners' Chronicle and of the Garden for the loan of woodcuts; the source is indicated hi each figure. Those figures which bear the name "Caparn" were most kindly drawn for me by my friend Mr. J. W. Caparn, of Oundle. The rest were prepared for me by Mr. Wilson, of Cambridge. Unless otherwise stated, the figures are of natural size.] I propose to treat my subject as much as possible from a gardener's point of view, and shall therefore not take up more time than is necessary with botanical details. To start with, I use the term "bulbous" in the gardener's, not in the botanists meaning. We gardeners are regarded, and indeed justly regarded, by the botanists as being very loose in our use of the word "bulb"; we often include as bulbs what ought to be called "corms," "tubers," or the like. I do not propose to discuss to-day which Irises form "true" bulbs, and shall use the term "bulb" in the loose gardening sense. It a gardening definition of a bulb be wanted, we may perhaps say that "it is a specially fed bud which separates of its own accord from the mother stock in order to live an independent existence." In the wall separating the rooms are two arched entrances - the one on the right-hand side, the other on the left - and in the centre, between these entrances, is a fireplace. Over the fireplace is an opening, shaped and framed like a mirror; so that, with the view gained through the archways, the further room is almost entirely disclosed. In this further room, on the left, is a single door admitting to a small apartment; in the centre, at the back, is a conservatory seen through glazed doors; and on the right is a window affording a view of a garden. We do not get the same net-like venation but we can' approach the color. Gray Morn I introduced for its tone of heliotrope gray and the shape of the flower is often so abominable that I regret the introduction. Thundercloud is also gray-hued but darkly velvety on the falls Circe has a curious curved venation on the haft and blade that always re minds me of cat's whiskers. I find it fascinating, but it is dull in color. For real somberness Valkyrie is my finest at present; the falls are velvety, dark maroon purple, almost black in some lights, and the standards are dull drab. I have failed in my attempts to obtain variegata coloring with height and size, but I am still trying; the intensity of color in Katrinka is fine; Stanley H. White has merit, but I have so strong a vision of what might be that the existing varieties seem below par.
