Cadet Gray by James Vesely Pdf

Early morning formations and close-order drill, Saturday afternoon football games and the pure hell of being a plebe. Spit-shined shoes and polished brass, flying flags and fluttering guidons. Sunday parades, full-dress balls, and the never-ending grind of studies. The joy of cars and girls and dreams of youth. And above all, the exciting, confusing, always uncertain adventure of growing up and coming of age. Sixteen heartwarming, often humorous stories that cover four decades of ritual, custom, and tradition at Morgan Park Military Academy, seen through the eyes of one legendary instructor, Capt. Francis S. Gray. For more than forty years, his common sense and stubborn insistence on academic excellence helped generations of cadets struggle through awkward adolescence and into young manhood.

Dress Gray by Lucian K. Truscott Pdf

This New York Times–bestselling novel about a crime and cover-up at West Point offers “a compelling portrait of the military academy” (The New York Times). Ry Slaight is a young cadet at the United States Military Academy, walking punishment tours in May 1968, when he hears that the body of a plebe has been found floating in Lake Popolopen. Supposedly, it was an accident—but it’s not long before Slaight learns details about the autopsy suggesting a much darker story. Slaight’s personal quest to uncover the truth—and the authorities’ efforts to keep it from him—will reveal both heroes and villains within the Long Gray Line in this “frightening novel about ‘a secret cult headquartered on the Hudson behind a stone façade.’ . . . The author mounts an attack on his alma mater with brilliance and fury” (Newsday).

Cadets on Campus by John A. Coulter Pdf

Since the founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1802, more than eight hundred military schools have existed in this country. The vast majority have closed their doors, been absorbed into other educational institutions, or otherwise faded away, but others soldier on, adapting to changing times and changing educational needs. While many individual institutions have had their histories written or their stories told, to date no single book has attempted to explore the full scope of the military school in American history. Cadets on Campus is the first book to cover the origin, history, and culture of the nation’s military schools—secondary and collegiate—and this breadth of coverage will appeal to historians and alumni alike. Author John Alfred Coulter identifies several key figures who were pivotal to the formation of military education, including Sylvanus Thayer, the “father of West Point,” and Alden Partridge, the founder of the school later known as Norwich University, the first private military school in the country. He also reveals that military schools were present across the nation, despite the conventional wisdom that most military schools, and, indeed, the culture that surrounds them, were limited to the South. Coulter addresses the shuttering of military schools in the era after the Vietnam War and then notes a curious resurgence of interest in military education since the turn of the century.
