Calorimetric Methods for the Characterization of Porous Materials by Juan Carlos Moreno-Piraján,Liliana Giraldo Gutiérrez,Fernando Gómez-Granados,Diana Cristina Hernández-Monje Pdf

Calorimetric Methods for the Characterization of Porous Materials presents calorimetric methods used in the characterization of porous materials using chemical thermodynamics. Among these materials, catalysts, supports and adsorbents (such as Activated Carbon, Metal-Organic-Frameworks, SBA-15, Zeolites, Graphene, Graphite, Carbon Foams) are presented. In addition, the use of calorimetry in the study of catalytic reactions in different phases is explored—applicable to air and wastewater treatment, clean and renewable energies, green chemistry, as well as energy production and storage (Carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen at high pressure). Chapters summarize basic concepts of thermodynamics and kinetics alongside experimental techniques such as thermal analysis and calorimetry. In addition, information is given about different calorimetric methods that can be used in studies aimed at characterizing the physicochemical properties of adsorbents, supports and solid catalysts, as well as the processes related to the adsorption-desorption phenomena of the reactants and/or products of catalytic reactions. Addresses the problems involved with the chemical thermodynamics of porous materials, with a significant practical element explaining experimental parameters and how to perform calculations Presents, in detail, the main instrumental calorimetric methods, including those that must be carefully considered to avoid experimental errors Demonstrates, step-by-step, how to perform calculations using data obtained from instrumentation to achieve reliable results Provides novel explanations on how to use calorimetry in catalyst characterization Allows readers to broaden the spectrum of the application of calorimetry in the study of materials

Calorimetry by Juan Carlos Moreno Piraján Pdf

Today, calorimetry is considered an art (although some consider it a tool) that studies the energy changes that occur during a change of state. This allows physicochemical analysis to study in detail the thermodynamic systems and to evaluate the different variables that establish the characteristics of the system itself. This book illustrates how the reader can use this technique in a wide spectrum of applications.

Nanoporous Materials: Science And Engineering by G Q Max Lu,Xiu Song Zhao Pdf

Porous materials are of scientific and technological importance because of the presence of voids of controllable dimensions at the atomic, molecular, and nanometer scales, enabling them to discriminate and interact with molecules and clusters. Interestingly the big deal about this class of materials is about the “nothingness” within — the pore space. International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) classifies porous materials into three categories — micropores of less than 2 nm in diameter, mesopores between 2 and 50 nm, and macropores of greater than 50 nm. In this book, nanoporous materials are defined as those porous materials with pore diameters less than 100 nm.Over the last decade, there has been an ever increasing interest and research effort in the synthesis, characterization, functionalization, molecular modeling and design of nanoporous materials. The main challenges in research include the fundamental understanding of structure-property relations and tailor-design of nanostructures for specific properties and applications. Research efforts in this field have been driven by the rapid growing emerging applications such as biosensor, drug delivery, gas separation, energy storage and fuel cell technology, nanocatalysis and photonics. These applications offer exciting new opportunities for scientists to develop new strategies and techniques for the synthesis and applications of these materials. This book provides a series of systematic reviews of the recent developments in nanoporous materials. It covers the following topics: (1) synthesis, processing, characterization and property evaluation; (2) functionalization by physical and/or chemical treatments; (3) experimental and computational studies on fundamental properties, such as catalytic effects, transport and adsorption, molecular sieving and biosorption; (4) applications, including photonic devices, catalysis, environmental pollution control, biological molecules separation and isolation, sensors, membranes, hydrogen and energy storage, etc./a

Characterization of Porous Solids by H. Kral,Jean Rouquerol,Kenneth S.W. Sing,KK Unger Pdf

The importance of porosity has long been recognized by scientists and engineers. Porous solids are widely encountered in industry and everyday life and their behaviour, e.g. chemical reactivity, adsorptive capacity, and catalytic activity is dependent on their pore structure. A considerable amount of work on porous solids has been undertaken both in academic and in industrial laboratories. However, all this activity is in urgent need of a critical appraisal. To undertake this task, a number of leading experts in the field of adsorption, porosimetry, X-ray and neutron scattering, optical and electron microscopy, calorimetry and fluid permeation, were brought together at the 1987 IUPAC (COPS I) Symposium. This proceedings volume provides an up-to-date overall review of the theoretical foundations for modelling and characterizing porous systems. It deals with most of the techniques in current use as applied to both model systems and porous solids of industrial importance. The reader will find the description and discussion of a number of novel techniques as well as a critical appraisal and comparison of the more established methods. All those concerned with the characterization of porous solids in academic and industrial laboratories will find much to interest them in this volume. It should be on the bookshelf of applied research centres involved in adsorption, catalysis, purification of gases and liquids, pigments, fillers, building materials, etc.

Sol-Gel Methods for Materials Processing by Yuriy L. Zub,Vadim G. Kessler Pdf

Sol-gel processing is a soft-chemistry method to obtain functional materials at low temperatures. This route can be used to produce very sophisticated nanomaterials and to tailor the materials to very specific applications. Adsorption and detection of pollutants, water purification and soil remediation represent challenging fields of application that can be exploited by sol-gel materials. In this volume several contributions from invited speakers and participants at the NATO advanced research workshop on "Sol-gel approaches to materials for pollution control, water purification and soil remediation", which has been held in Kiev, Ukraine on October 2007, are reported. The book offers a wide and updated overview of the most advanced sol-gel methods for materials processing and at the same time presents several case studies concerning possible solutions for environmental issues. General articles on sol-gel from the invited speakers and focused research articles allow getting inside sol-gel applications on this very important field.

Zeolite Characterization and Catalysis by Arthur W. Chester,E.G. Derouane Pdf

The idea for putting together a tutorial on zeolites came originally from my co-editor, Eric Derouane, about 5 years ago. I ?rst met Eric in the mid-1980s when he spent 2 years working for Mobil R&D at our then Corporate lab at Princeton, NJ. He was on the senior technical staff with projects in the synthesis and characterization of new materials. At that time, I managed a group at our Paulsboro lab that was responsible for catalyst characterization in support of our catalyst and process development efforts, and also had a substantial group working on new material synthesis. Hence, our interests overlapped considerably and we met regularly. After Eric moved back to Namur (initially), we maintained contact, and in the 1990s, we met a number of times in Europe on projects of joint interest. It was after I retired from ExxonMobil in 2002 that we began to discuss the tutorial concept seriously. Eric had (semi-)retired and lived on the Algarve, the southern coast of Portugal. In January 2003, my wife and I spent 3 weeks outside of Lagos, and I worked parts of most days with Eric on the proposed content of the book. We decided on a comprehensive approach that ultimately amounted to some 20+ chapters covering all of zeolite chemistry and catalysis and gave it the title Zeolite Chemistry and Catalysis: An integrated Approach and Tutorial.
