The Legacy of Israel in Judah's Bible by Daniel Fleming Pdf

This book offers a new way for biblical scholars and archaeologists to envision how the Bible's story relates to history. It presents a fresh case for the urgency and interest of biblical study in historical context, embracing the complications of a text collection with the messy history of transmission and uncertain knowledge of the past. Focusing on structures of politics and society, the analysis is situated in the broad study of antiquity, so that ancient Israel may contribute to understanding problems in the classical world and other domains outside the Near East.

The Legacy of Atlantis by Gordon Donnell Pdf

THE LOST CONTINENT OF ATLANTIS Often dismissed as myth, Atlantis was a real place. It was an island rather than a continent. Contrary to legend it existed within the scope of written history. It was destroyed in a release of subterranean energy that visited catastrophe on much of the civilized world of the Middle Bronze Age. Cutting edge science and ancient writing combine to give us a picture of profound change. Empires rose and fell in the wake of the catastrophe. Borders shifted and cultures migrated, taking with them their knowledge, customs and gods. The outcome left a legacy that persists to this day. The way we read and write, the way we calculate, the way we govern ourselves, all have roots in the destruction of Atlantis.

After Canaan by Wayde Compton Pdf

"Compton pushes us to look beneath the surface—past those comforting tales of nationhood and racial solidarity—to the more nebulous and ever-shifting truth. This is a brilliant and original work that should be mandatory reading for any student of race and history."—Danzy Senna, author of Caucasia After Canaan, the first nonfiction book by acclaimed African Canadian poet Wayde Compton, repositions the North American discussion of race in the wake of the tumultuous twentieth century. Written from the perspective of someone who was born and lives outside of African American culture, it riffs on the concept of Canada as a promised land (or "Canaan") encoded in African American myth and song since the days of slavery. These varied essays, steeped in a kind of history rarely written about, explore the language of racial misrecognition (also known as "passing"), the failure of urban renewal, humor as a counterweight to "official" multiculturalism, the poetics of hip hop turntablism, and the impact of the Obama phenomenon on the way we speak about race itself. Compton marks the passing of old modes of antiracism and multiculturalism, and points toward what may or may not be a "post-racial" future, but will without doubt be a brave new world of cultural perception. After Canaan is a brilliant and thoughtful consideration of African (North) American culture as it attempts to redefine itself in the Obama era.

A Sinner's Legacy by Dennis Stackhouse Pdf

Were you aware of the fact that you are creating a legacy? Each and every one of us, whether we realize it or not, whether we agree with it or not, even whether we like it or not, does have a very powerful, unmistakable influence on those around us. This even includes those we may not know personally or that we may not understand we are influencing. Someone is always watching us and we are helping to shape their lives for good or for evil. But now think about this: Did you realize that you are exerting your influence as a sinner? That's right; even Christians are people who do sin, at least occasionally. The Apostle Paul told us in Romans 3:23 that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." There is not one of us, Christian or not, who is free from sin. The good news is that we don't have to remain in sin or continue to live a sinful lifestyle. In short, we can all be people who decide to make an impact on this world for God and for good instead of for Satan and unrighteousness. That choice faces each of us. What should be seen as equally good news is the fact that God's forgiveness, for those who come to Him His way, is impartial and complete. Our background, ethnicity, or former lifestyle are immaterial; God is ready and willing to extend His forgiveness to us. And the rewards that come to those who are forgiven go far beyond anything we can possibly imagine. In this book, we will together explore these topics and hopefully come to realize that our legacy, the impact we have on other people, can endure even after we have left this physical world. I hope that you, like me, find this to be an exciting time of discovery from God's word. May He richly bless each person who seeks to influence those around them in a godly manner!

Yahweh Versus Baal by Norman C. Habel Pdf

Since 1929, scholars have been concerned with the interpretation of certain Canaanite literary materials found at Ras Shamra in North Syria, known as Ugarit in ancient times. Attention has been paid, primarily, to certain linguistic and cultural parallels between this corpus of literature and sections of the Old Testament. But despite the numerous treatments of the isolated points of contact between Ugaritic and biblical thought, one major question has not received an adequate answer. How and to what extent are the Ugaritic texts, and especially the Baal texts, relevant for an appreciation of the fundamentals of the Israelite religion? Professor Habel seeks to answer at least part of this question by translating pertinent segments of the Baal texts, according to the sequence of G. R. Driver, summarizing their context, and considering their import, thought sequence, and basic ideas in relation to appropriate materials from the early faith of Israel. The succinct results of this comparison are provocative, to say the least. The author begins by isolating the major features of an underlying “conflict tradition.” The conflict between Israel’s beliefs and the religious forces of its environment was a vital influence in the formulation of Israel’s earliest religious faith and experience. The content of this faith as summarized in the concise wording of Exodus 19:3–6 is shown to be virtually identical with that of Israel’s earliest poetic heritage where a lively polemic against the Canaanite religious is discernible. One of the highlights of Professor Habel’s comparison of the Baal texts with Israel’s archaic poetic traditions is his contribution to the understanding of Exodus 15. In this connection he discovers a clearly defined sequence of ideas common to certain Baal texts and Exodus 15:1–18. By skillfully utilizing the work of other scholars the author sheds additional light on the polemical and theological import of several passages depicting theophanies of Yahweh. A similar evaluation of the relevance of the Ugaritic texts for the cultic practices of Israel is made possible by a sober evaluation of the pertinent texts.
