Canada's Forest Genetic Resources by Alexander John Mosseler,Petawawa National Forestry Institute Pdf

Summarizes Canada's forest genetic resources issues and concerns according to Food & Agricultural Organization guidelines. Compiled as a national report for the International Conference & Program on Plant Genetic Resources in preparation for a Global Plan of Action for the conservation and management of plant genetic resources globally. Canada's forest genetic resources are defined within the boreal and temperate ecozones to facilitate a discussion of these resources within their global context. National co-ordination of forest genetic resources conservation and management by the National Forest Genetic Resources Centre is reviewed, along with other national and regional conservation and management activities. Also reviews national goals, policies, programs, and legislation related to forest genetic resources, and Canada's collaboration with other countries.

Forest Genetic Resource Conservation and Management in Canada by Petawawa National Forestry Institute Pdf

The National Forest Genetic Resources Centre held a workshop to address issues relevant to the conservation and management of Canada's forest genetic resources. The workshop included presentations highlighting the current status of conservation efforts and ideas and strategies for optimal in-situ and ex-situ conservation of forest genetic resources. Working group discussions were a major component of the workshop and were aimed at identifying gaps in current conservation efforts, conservation priorities, research initiatives to support conservation priorities, and promoting opportunities for increased collaborative efforts. A major output of the workshop was the development of a framework for a national strategy to focus on the sound management of Canada's forest genetic resources. This report presents the workshop proceedings, including the contributed papers on forest genetic conservation.

Access to Forest Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing by Canada. Environment Canada,New Brunswick. Department of Natural Resources Pdf

Essential for the adaptation to environmental changes, the diversity of genetic resources (GR) has been over the past several years a source of potential economic value for the biotechnology sector in industrialized countries. Bioprospecting activities are therefore increasingly conducted nowadays in all regions of the world where ecosystems are abundant in biodiversity, and in regions sheltering atypical species, such as small islands, or extreme environments close to the poles. For all provider countries of GR, unfair bioprospecting activities could result in a loss of unique genetic specimens, and also missed opportunities for generating potential benefits associated with their use. As a first step in this process, the Government of Canada, in collaboration with the Government of New Brunswick, held the workshop "Access to Forest Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing: Potential Opportunities and Challenges for Governments and Forest Stakeholders" in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on February 21 and 22, 2006. This report presents the outcomes of the workshop and highlights key considerations identified by the participants.

Forest Conservation Genetics by Andrew Graham Young Pdf

Effective management of forest genetic resources is a key element in future forest conservation. Genetic diversity is essential for both the long-term stability and the short-term productivity of forest ecosystems. Hence there is a great need for information on forest conservation genetics. The book consists of 22 chapters and is divided into five parts, integrating genetic, ecological and socioeconomic information. It also includes, as a CD-ROM, the population genetics software package POPGENE. Contributors include international authorities from the USA and Canada, Europe, South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Geographic Variation in Forest Trees by Maria Morgenstern Pdf

Geographic Variation in Forest Trees is the first book to examine this subject from a world-wide perspective. The author discusses population genetic theory and genetic systems of native North American tree species as they interact with environments in the major climatic regions in the world. He then demonstrates how this knowledge is used to guide seed zoning and seed transfer in silviculture, basing much of his discussion on models developed in Scandinavia and North America. In the final chapter, the author addresses the issue of genetic conservation -- a subject of great concern in the face of accelerated forest destruction, industrial pollution, and climatic change. This comprehensive, well-researched book makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of one of our most important renewable natural resources.
