Drugstore Cowgirl by Patricia Joy MacKay Pdf

In 1964, Patricia MacKay immigrated to Canada from England in search of the wild-open lands and cowboy culture that captivated her as a child. In the 1960s, the Wild West was still alive and kicking in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, although it had been tamed--a little. Old-time hospitality and helping anyone in need was the acknowledged way of life. Pat learned the Cariboo-Chilcotin way of life first hand by spending her summers working on guest ranches and finding other jobs to keep her occupied during the winter. From learning how to cook on the job to kitchen disasters and successes, roundups, branding, square dances and falling in love, she slowly gained acceptance into the tight-knit communities of BC's Interior. Ranching meant long hours, hard work, and a lifestyle all its own. Entertainment was homemade. There were rodeos, dances, and music around campfires in the summer and ice hockey, tobogganing, and parties in the winter. Sadly, that way of life is gradually disappearing, but this book relives the way things were between 1964 and 1976; it tells of a unique brand of people from a variety of backgrounds who made this part of the west their home.

The Calgary Stampede by Kenneth Wayne Tingley Pdf

By 1912 the large-scale cowboy ranches of the Old West had been disappearing for years and the Calgary Stampede -- along with other exhibitions, like Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show -- was set-up to commemorate a fading way of life for younger generations and for those who still remembered the mythic era. The Canadian Northwest shared in that grand tradition, and the time was right for a great Canadian cowboy showcase. After a century of international acclaim, the western dream continues and to commemorate the early days of the great Calgary Stampede, a collection of post cards from its enthusiastic youthful years illustrates the look and feel of those exciting times. Taken from the vast post card collection held by the University of Alberta Libraries, these classic views capture all the excitement, from the championship cowboys, cowgirls, and horses, to the tragedies of defeat and injuries. The parades, the aboriginal camps, and all the lively hoopla are recalled in these images, with historical text to add context to those days of dust, sweat and glory.

Not Hockey by Angie Abdou,Jamie Dopp Pdf

In this carefully curated collection of essays, editors Jamie Dopp and Angie Abdou go beyond their first collection, Writing the Body in Motion, to engage with the meaning of sport found in Canadian sport literature. How does “sport” differ from physically risky recreational activities that require strength and skill? Does sport demand that someone win? At what point does a sport become an art? With the aim of prompting reflections on and discussions of the boundaries of sport, contributors explore how literature engages with sport as a metaphor, as a language, and as bodily expression. Instead of a focus on what is often described as Canada’s national pastime, contributors examine sports in Canadian literature that are decidedly not hockey. From skateboarding and parkour to fly fishing and curling, these essays engage with Canadian histories and broader societal understandings through sports on the margin. Interspersed with original reflections by iconic Canadian literary figures such as Steven Heighton, Aritha Van Herk, Thomas Wharton, and Timothy Taylor, this volume is fresh and intriguing and offers new ways of reading the body.

A Cowgirl's Life In The Mountains by Lauralee Northcott Pdf

Cowgirl’s Creed Courage doesn’t develop when things are going well. Instead, it creeps up your backbone fed by the springs of fear. So begins A Cowgirl’s Life in the Mountains, where colorful, authentic characters—including the author herself—reveal their stories as they navigate rugged terrain and negotiate the temperaments of fellow travelers. In her debut book, Lauralee Northcott braids together stories, songs, poems, menus and recipes from her 30-plus years as a horseback guide and cook in Washington’s Pasayten and Lake Chelan-Sawtooth wilderness areas. Lauralee captures human (and animal) behavior humorously and thoughtfully, recounting evenings where her cook tent and the campfire became the space for sharing hearty dinners, reflecting on the day, getting better acquainted, and enjoying cowboy music. Focused and engaging, her experiences as an entertainer and a mountain horseman shine through. Perfect for anyone who loves the mountains, horses and the wilderness, A Cowgirl’s Life in the Mountains will teach readers practical wilderness tips, as well as the art of Dutch oven cooking and how to set up their own backyard “campfire”—a space to share a meal and a story, and the magic of the outdoors. So saddle up and grab a big slice of hard-won, horseman knowledge, served up in some kickass prose and sweet poetry!

A Wilder West by Mary-Ellen Kelm Pdf

The rodeo cowboy is one of the most evocative images of the Wild West. The master of the frontier, he is renowned for his masculinity, toughness, and skill. A Wilder West returns to rodeo's small-town roots to explore how rodeo simultaneously embodies and subverts our traditional understandings of power relations between man and nature, women and men, settlers and Aboriginal peoples. An important contact zone – a chaotic and unpredictable place of encounter – rodeo has challenged expected social hierarchies, bringing people together across racial and gender divides to create friendships, rivalries, and unexpected intimacies. At the rodeo, Aboriginal riders became local heroes, and rodeo queens spoke their minds. A Wilder West complicates the idea of western Canada as a “white man's country” and shows how rural rodeos have been communities in which different rules applied. Lavishly illustrated, this creative history will change the way we see the West's most controversial sport.

Cincinnati Radio by Michael A. Martini Pdf

Like radio listeners in many other cities its size, Greater Cincinnatians have kept their ears tuned to their local radio stations for music, news, and entertainment for nearly a century. However, unlike those cities, Cincinnati enjoyed several unique broadcast stories ranging from some of the earliest forays into radio dramatics to the country's first 500,000-watt superpower radio station. The listeners were treated to several up-and-coming celebrities like Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, Andy Williams, and "Fats" Waller; the rise of three major communications corporations; and ultimately, an amazing array of nationally broadcast network shows and talents that, for a brief period, placed the city's broadcasters behind only New York and Chicago in terms of importance. With rare and often unpublished images, Cincinnati Radio attempts to capture the first 50 years of that golden era of Cincinnati radio broadcasting in both word and picture.

The Senator by Dr. Carl R. Stekelenburg Pdf

Officer Robert Williams gets his Masters Degree in Criminal Justice and is quickly promoted from road duties to command duties with a rank of Captain. He is placed in command of the Waycross, Georgia patrol post. His assistant is Ron Astro. Rons wife is Dr. Linda Astro, professor of political science at Waycross College. Governor Nathan Deal had the responsibility of appointing a new U.S. Senator upon the death by heart attack of the existing junior senator. Officers Ron and Robert had both performed courteous service for the governor and his protection detail on his visits to Waycross. The previous year they and their wives, Dr. Linda and Penny, had attended a governors ball and fundraising dinner at Waycross College. The governor had been impressed with both couples. He was particularly impressed with the economic and political understanding of both Dr. Linda and Robert. When the junior senator died of a heart attack, the governor, already acquainted with Dr. Linda Astro, quickly appointed her to fill the remaining term of that senator as provided by state law. Linda quickly accepted, but didnt mention she was three weeks pregnant. Off to Washington D.C. she went. She represented Georgia quite well, but the child continued to grow within her. Soon she was forced to seek maternity leave. Governor Deal had to appoint someone on a temporary basis while Dr. Linda was in the hospital. This was just too important a time for Georgia not to have two senators in Washington. President Obama was pushing for an increase in the debt ceiling for the current budget year of 2011. He had already shoved down Georgias throat the Obama health care plan. Governor Deal immediately thought of Officer Williams to fill the post temporarily while Dr. Linda was in the hospital. Officer Williams requested and was granted extended leave without pay to temporarily become a U.S. Senator. This book is his story.
