The Development of Postsecondary Education Systems in Canada by Donald Fisher,Kjell Rubenson,Claude Trottier,Theresa Shanahan Pdf

Significant public investment and increased access to higher education lead to economic development - governments across the political and ideological spectrum believe this and have designed and implemented policy based on this understanding. The Development of Postsecondary Education Systems in Canada examines how these policies affect the structure and performance of postsecondary education. This comprehensive study compares the evolution and outcomes of higher education policy in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec over the past three decades. The authors begin with an understanding that in order to explain the role of postsecondary education in society, they must locate systemic change. Drawing on documentary analysis and interviews, the focus is on how policy priorities are reflected in "system" behaviours: performance, funding arrangements, design, and structural components. Current theories about the liberal-democratic state, academic capitalism, and marketization inform discussions of the changing role of higher education in a globalized knowledge society. The book presents policy and education as a multidimensional exchange between the postsecondary community, policy makers, and the behaviour and performance of educational systems and concludes that higher education is a key actor in the restructuring of the state. The Development of Postsecondary Education Systems in Canada shows how higher education policy has been driven by a changing political and economic imperative and examines the contradictions and unintended consequences of education policy. The Handbook of Canadian Higher Education by Theresa Shanahan,Michelle Nilson,Li Jeen Broshko Pdf

In The Handbook of Canadian Higher Education Law, experts examine key legal issues in postsecondary education. Establishing the current governance arrangements for Canadian postsecondary education within a historical context, the editors provide a detailed look at the legislative framework of postsecondary education and the role of the federal and provincial governments in organizing, regulating, and funding these institutions. Individual chapters analyze and expound on legal issues associated with institutional governance and management, identifying laws that define the rights and freedoms of faculty and students, and the obligations of the institutions towards them. Contributors engage with a wide range of issues associated with community activities - such as research ventures, knowledge mobilization, commercial activities, partnerships with industry, and land development projects that are hosted by postsecondary institutions. Presenting a wide range of documentary analysis and study of case law, legislation, regulation, and policy, this essential contribution to public policy determines current and emerging legal issues facing the academy.

Postsecondary Education in British Columbia by Robert Cowin Pdf

The literature about postsecondary education in British Columbia has largely focused on public colleges and universities, while paying less attention to vocational colleges, apprenticeship, continuing education, and private institutions. Robert Cowin addresses that gap. He provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the contemporary provincial postsecondary system and examines the role of social justice, human capital formation, and marketization during five significant transitions. This dynamic approach provides a thoughtful critical analysis of the development of the institutional arrangements – the distribution of institutions by size, mission, type, and location – and policies that have shaped education in the province.

More Than an Academic Question by David M. Cameron Pdf

This document discusses Canada's universities and the public policies that have shaped and supported them. It focuses on universities and governments, and the delicate balance that marks their interdependence. It is concerned with Canadian federalism and the formulation of policy in and among 10 provincial governments as well as across the division of provincial and federal jurisdiction. It also identifies patterns both of divergence and convergence, of cooperation and conflict that attend public policy in a federal and intergovernmental context. Finally, it addresses the government and management of universities themselves.

International Education as Public Policy in Canada by Merli Tamtik,Roopa Desai Trilokekar,Glen A. Jones Pdf

In the early twenty-first century international education emerged as an almost ubiquitous concept within discussions of educational curriculum; the objectives of schools, universities, and colleges; and government policies for K–12 and higher education. Although far from a new phenomenon, many jurisdictions now view international education as a highly competitive global industry. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of international education policy in Canada, tracing the complex history of when, how, and why it emerged as a policy area of strategic importance. Illuminating a uniquely Canadian perspective, influenced by regional interests and federal-provincial tensions, International Education as Public Policy in Canada addresses challenging questions: Why was Canada a latecomer in addressing this policy issue? What is the relationship between international education and Canadian immigration policy? How did international education develop as a major Canadian industry? The resulting essays from leading scholars contribute not only to the growing Canadian literature on international education policy but also to a critical, global conversation. Contemplating where the Canadian story of international education is headed, International Education as Public Policy in Canada calls for a broader debate on ethical practices in internationalization, focusing on inclusion, equity, compassion, and reciprocity.

Sociology of Education in Canada by Karen Robson Pdf

Sociology of Education in Canada utilizes a contemporary theoretical focus to analyze how education in Canada is affected by pre-existing and persistent inequalities among members of society. It presents the historical and cultural factors that have shaped our current education system, examines the larger social trends that have contributed to present problems, discusses the various interest groups involved, and analyzes the larger social discourses that influence any discussion of these issues. To achieve this, Karen Robson uses many current, topical, and relatable issues in Canadian education to ensure that readers fully comprehend the information being presented and leave with an appreciation of how the sociology of education is inextricably linked to issues of stratification.
