Canadians Behind Enemy Lines, 1939-1945 by Roy MacLaren Pdf

During the Second World War, almost one hundred Canadians served the Allied forces by passing as locals in occupied countries. At the behest of two British secret services, these men made language and custom their costumes. They risked their lives assisting resistance groups in sabotage and ambush missions or in smuggling Allied airmen out of occupied territories. Quiet heroes of the war, these bold Canadians helped to make the brutal and unrelenting warfare of the underground a potent weapon in the Allied arsenal. This is a study of unstinting personal courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

The Special Operations Executive in Malaya by Rebecca Kenneison Pdf

During World War II, agents of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) infiltrated Japanese-occupied Malaya. There they worked with Malayan guerrilla groups, including the communist-sponsored Malayan Peoples Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), regarded as the precursor of the communist insurgent army of the Malayan Emergency. This book traces the development of SOE's Malayan operations, and analyses the interactions between SOE and the various guerrilla groups. It explores the reasons for and the extent of Malay disillusionment with Japanese rule, and demonstrates how guerrilla service acted as a training ground for some later Malay leaders of the independent nation. However, the reports written about the MPAJA by SOE operatives just after the war failed to draw out the likely future threat posed by the communists to the returning colonial administration. Rebecca Kenneison shows that the British possessed a wealth of local information, but failed to convert it into active intelligence in the period prior to the Malayan Emergency. In doing so she provides new insights into the impact of SOE on Malayan politics, the nature of Malayan communism's challenge to colonial rule, and British post-war intelligence in Malaya.

Canada and the World since 1867 by Asa McKercher Pdf

This book is a history of Canada's role in the world as well as the impact of world events on Canada. Starting from the country's quasi-independence from Britain in 1867, its analysis moves through events in Canadian and global history to the present day. Looking at Canada's international relations from the perspective of elite actors and normal people alike, this study draws on original research and the latest work on Canadian international and transnational history to examine Canadians' involvement with a diverse mix of issues, from trade and aid, to war and peace, to human rights and migration. The book traces four inter-connected themes: independence and growing estrangement from Britain; the longstanding and ongoing tensions created by ever-closer relations with the United States; the huge movement of people from around the world into Canada; and the often overlooked but significant range of Canadian contacts with the non-Western world. With an emphasis on the reciprocal nature of Canada's involvement in world affairs, ultimately it is the first work to blend international and transnational approaches to the history of Canadian international relations.

Canada's Road to the Pacific War by Timothy Wilford Pdf

In December 1941, Japan attacked multiple targets in the Far East and the Pacific, including Canadian battalions in Hong Kong. This intriguing account of Canadian intelligence gathering and strategic planning on the eve of the crisis dispels the assumption that the Allies were totally unprepared for war. Canadians worked closely with their US and Allied counterparts to uncover Japan's intentions and to develop a strategic plan for defence. By highlighting Canada's role as a Pacific power, this book sheds new light both on the Pacific War and on events that led to the creation of the Grand Alliance.

We Flew, We Fell, We Lived by Philip LaGrandeur Pdf

Torture, survival and escape. These three elements encompass We Flew, We Fell, We Lived, which recounts the experiences of Royal Canadian Air Force ex-prisoners of war and evaders from the Second World War. Forty Canadian officers and men from Bomber Command offer their personal accounts of the German treatment of allied air force personnel and the organization of PoW camps. The first of four sections has each PoW's story arranged by the camp in which he was held. The notorious Great Escape is covered in detail, based on the testimony of several of the Canadians involved. The evader section includes Canadians shot down behind enemy lines who escaped through Sweden, the Comet Line to Spain, and through Italy. One man gives a riveting description of his torture in the infamous Fresnes prison in Paris and his survival of the Buchenwald concentration camp. The last section covers the forced marches of air force PoWs in the last months of the war.Together, all the stories create a complex expose of PoW culture illustrated by two hundred photographs, maps, and artwork from various Stalag lufts (many previously unpublished). Never have there been so many comprehensive personal accounts of PoWs in one book.
