Cape Breton in the Long Twentieth Century by Lachlan MacKinnon,Andrew Parnaby Pdf

The emergence, dominance, and alarmingly rapid retreat of modernist industrial capitalism on Cape Breton Island during the “long twentieth century” offers a particularly captivating window on the lasting and varied effects of deindustrialization. Now, at the tail end of the industrial moment in North American history, the story of Cape Breton Island presents an opportunity to reflect on how industrialization and deindustrialization have shaped human experiences. Covering the period between 1860 and the early 2000s, this volume looks at trade unionism, state and cultural responses to deindustrialization, including the more recent pivot towards the tourist industry, and the lived experiences of Indigenous and Black people. Rather than focusing on the separate or distinct nature of Cape Breton, contributors place the island within broad transnational networks such as the financial world of the Anglo-Atlantic, the Celtic music revival, the Black diaspora, Canadian development programs, and more. In capturing the vital elements of a region on the rural resource frontier that was battered by deindustrialization, the histories included here show how the interplay of the state, cultures, and transnational connections shaped how people navigated these heavy pressures, both individually and collectively.

Cape Breton, Canada, at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century by Charles William Vernon Pdf

Excerpt from Cape Breton, Canada, at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century: A Treatise of Natural Resources and Development The coast of the island is of a varied and generally picturesque character. It is indented by bays and inlets, and has a number of excellent harbors, of which the most important are those of Sydney and Louisburg. The inlets are on the north, Bay St. Lawrence; on the northeast, Aspy Bay, Neil's Harbor, North and South Bay, Ingonish, St. Ann's Bay, the Great and Little Entrances of the Bras d'or Lakes, Sydney Harbor, Lingan Bay, Little Glace Bay, Cow Bay, Mira Bay; on the southeast, Louisburg Harbor, Gabarus Bay, Fourchu Bay, St. Peter's 'bay, Rocky Bay and Lennox Passage. On the northwest the inlets are small, and generally of little practical value. The chief are Port Hood Harbor, the mouth of the Mabou River, Broad Cove, the mouth of the Margaree River, and Cheticamp Harbor. In the Province of History by Ian McKay,Robin Bates Pdf

Using archival sources, novels, government reports, and works on tourism and heritage, Ian McKay and Robin Bates look at how state planners, key politicians, and cultural figures such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, long-time premier Angus L. Macdonald, and novelist Thomas Raddall were all instrumental in forming "tourism/history." The authors argue that Longfellow's 1847 poem Evangeline - on the brutal British expulsion of Acadians from Nova Scotia - became a template a new kind of profit-making history that exalted whiteness and excluded ethnic minorities, women, and working class movements. A remarkable look at the intersection of politics, leisure, and the presentation of public history, In the Province of History is a revealing account of how a region has both used and distorted its own past.
