Cardiff, by the Sea by Joyce Carol Oates Pdf

Four brand-new novellas by the #1 New York Times-bestselling, National Book Award-winning “grand mistress of ghoulishness” (Publishers Weekly). An academic in Pennsylvania discovers a terrifying trauma from her past after inheriting a house in Cardiff, Maine from someone she has never heard of. A pubescent girl, overcome with loneliness, befriends a feral cat that becomes her protector from the increasingly aggressive males that surround her. A brilliant but shy college sophomore is distraught to discover that she’s pregnant, and the professor who takes her under his wing may not have innocent intentions. And a woman who marries into a family shattered by tragedy finds herself haunted by her predecessor’s voice, an inexplicably befouled well, and a compulsive attraction to a garage that took two lives. In these psychologically daring, chillingly suspenseful pieces, the author of We Were the Mulvaneys and Blonde writes about women facing threats past and present, once again cementing her reputation for “great intelligence and dead-on imaginative powers” (Los Angeles Times Book Review).

Cardiff After Dark by Maciej Dakowicz Pdf

Cardiff After Dark is the first monograph by British-based Polish photographer Maciej Dakowicz. Dakowicz spent five years photographing the nighttime revelries that take place in Cardiff over the weekend. Focused around a few pedestrianized streets in the city centre, Dakowicz's images capture nightlife fueled by alcohol and emotions. The arc of an evening's entertainment is captured in these candid photographs, which reveal fun and hilarity as well as fighting and drunken exhaustion. There are stag nights and hen parties, men dressed as superheroes and women dressed as Playboy bunnies, mountains of discarded chip wrappers, arrests by the police, and lots and lots of posing for photographs. Dakowicz's images, at times shocking or upsetting, form an important documentary photobook of British urban life in the early part of the 21st century.

Janet Cardiff by Janet Cardiff,Kitty Scott,Artangel (London, England) Pdf

This book documents Janet Cardiff's 1999 audio project, The Missing voice (Case Study B), and includes the full audio CD as well as images from this exploration of London's inner city. Part urban guide, part fiction, part film noir, her audio walk entwines the listener in a narrative that shifts through time and space. Intimate, even conspirational, Cardiff has created a psychologically absorbing experience for an audience of one at a time. You find yourself transported back in time. What was that sound? Who is speaking to you? Where does reality end, and what's imagined begin? Also included is an extended essay analyzing the artist's career to date. Born in 1957, in Brussels, Canada, Cardiff works and lives in Alberta and has shown internationally in, among others, London, New York, Berlin, and Vienna. Her work has been included in significant group exhibitions, notably Skulptur Projekte Munster, 1997; Present Tense: Nine Artists in the Nineties, at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the 1999 Carnegie International; and the Museum as Muse at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Dark Tides by Philippa Gregory Pdf

#1 New York Times bestselling author of Tidelands—the “searing portrait of a woman that resonates across the ages” (People)—returns with an evocative historical novel tracking the rise of the Tidelands family in London, Venice, and New England. Midsummer Eve 1670. Two unexpected visitors arrive at a shabby warehouse on the south side of the River Thames. The first is a wealthy nobleman seeking the lover he deserted twenty-one years earlier. Now James Avery has everything to offer: a fortune, a title, and the favor of the newly restored King Charles II. He believes that the warehouse’s poor owner Alinor has the one thing he cannot buy—his son and heir. The second visitor is a beautiful widow from Venice in deepest mourning. She claims Alinor as her mother-in-law and tells her of the death of Rob—Alinor’s son—drowned in the dark tides of the Venice lagoon. Meanwhile, Alinor’s brother Ned, in faraway New England, is making a life for himself between in the narrowing space between the jarring worlds of the English newcomers and the American Indians as they move towards inevitable war. Alinor writes to him that she knows—without doubt—that her son is alive and the widow is an imposter. But how can she prove it? Set in the poverty and glamour of Restoration London, in the golden streets of Venice, and on the tensely contested frontier of early America, this is a novel of greed and desire: for love, for wealth, for a child, and for home.

I never thought I'd be another statistic, another girl abducted in a foreign country, my entire future washed away by an impulsive, split second in time. But it's true. My name is Hattie Covington and I'm a statistic, but statistics never tell the whole story.

Assassinated Beauty by Kevin Cummins Pdf

An iconic selection of photographs of the most iconoclastic British band of the late twentieth century, Manic Street Preachers. In the early nineties, a group of disaffected and fiercely political young men from the Welsh valleys exploded onto a British music scene still in thrall to rave and acid house. With their early singles Motown Junk, You Love Us and Stay Beautiful the Manics reminded us at a moment of great hedonistic indulgence that pop is an instrument to provoke and destabilise. It was the legendary photographer Kevin Cummins who captured James, Sean, Richie and Nicky in their most uncompromising, glam-fixated early years. (Title) is a unique record of a band on a mission to reclaim rock n roll through literature, image and thrilling guitar pop. Working at the NME and already famous for his association with the classic images of Joy Division, The Smiths and Stone Roses, Cummins was the ideal photographer to capture the essence of a band who understood and manipulated androgynous and decadent imagery. These photographs document the period just before the release of Generation Terrorists (1992) up to Holy Bible (1995) and the subsequent disappearance of guitarist and lyricist, Richie Edwards. A revealing mix of studio shots and never-seen-before behind the scenes photographs of a band at arguably their creative zenith, (title) is the ultimate portrait of one of the last great British rock n roll bands.

Souls Speak by John Wingate Pdf

Prepare yourself. This true story strains the limits of human understanding.'Souls Speak' details the astonishing paranormal investigation into the fate of three boys believed lost in the vast caves beneath historic Hannibal, Missouri. A year-long investigation involving three evidential clairvoyants independently identified the boys as the earliest victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, many years before the madman's 1972-1978 Chicago murder spree claimed the lives of thirty-three young men and boys. The boys vanished on May 10, 1967 and their disappearance sparked the largest cave search in US history, the topic of Wingate's previous book, "Lost Boys of Hannibal." It had been believed the boys were victims of a cave collapse, but the astounding preternatural probe documented in "Souls Speak" brings into question the long-believed cause of their disappearances, and asks where their bodies might eventually be found.

Constructions of Gender in Late Antique Manichaean Cosmological Narrative by Susanna Towers Pdf

Manichaeism emerged from Sasanian Persia in the third century CE and flourished in Persia, the Roman Empire, Central Asia and beyond until succumbing to persecution from rival faiths in the eighth to ninth century. Its founder, Mani, claimed to be the final embodiment of a series of prophets sent over time to expound divine wisdom. This monograph explores the constructions of gender embedded in Mani's colourful dualist cosmological narrative, in which a series of gendered divinities are in conflict with the demonic beings of the Kingdom of Darkness. The Jewish and Gnostic roots of Mani's literary constructions of gender are examined in parallel with Sasanian societal expectations. Reconstructions of gender in subsequent Manichaean literature reflect the changing circumstances of the Manichaean community. As the first major study of gender in Manichaean literature, this monograph draws upon established approaches to the study of gender in late antique religious literature, to present a portrait of a historically maligned and persecuted religious community.
