Cardiovascular Diabetology by Enrique Z. Fisman,Alexander Tenenbaum Pdf

The prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes - three links of the same 'atherothrombotic chain' - has reached pandemic proportions worldwide. As a result, our civilization is at war against a threatening enemy: cardio-diabetes. Several independent physiological processes underlie the clustering of cardio-diabetes, including central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, inflammation, impaired glucose tolerance, and hypertension. Early detection is of overwhelming importance for public health. The complex and intimate relationship between cardiovascular disease and diabetes from basic science to clinical and therapeutic concerns is discussed in this outstanding book. Beginning with molecular, biochemical, inflammatory and cellular aspects, this publication continues with histological and pathophysiological issues, details particular problems in specific metabolic and clinical settings, and finally analyzes several aspects of clinical pharmacology focusing on the optimal management of combined dyslipidemia and non-insulin antidiabetic therapy in cardiac diabetic patients. This book will be a gain in knowledge for every cardiologist, diabetologist, specialist in internal medicine, nutritionalist, general physician and medical student.

Cardiovascular Issues in Endocrinology by R. Granata,J. Isgaard Pdf

Most endocrine diseases, if not treated or controlled, have cardiovascular manifestations. Both GH deficiency and GH excess impair cardiovascular functions, e.g. in patients with acromegaly, who have a shortened life expectancy and increased mortality mostly due to cardiovascular complications in uncontrolled disease. Moreover, Cushing’s syndrome and diabetes are well known for metabolic and cardiovascular manifestations, as well as hypo- and hyperthyroidism. Both adipose tissue and the heart have been increasingly recognized as organs with partially endocrine functions, which produce adipokines and brain natriuretic peptide, respectively, and influence a number of cardiovascular parameters. Primary aldosteronism as a cause for secondary hypertension is still a great challenge to detect and diagnose properly; however, new important discoveries have been made regarding the genetics of this probably underestimated cause of hypertension. Written by distinguished researchers in their respective fields, this book will give both researchers and clinicians an excellent update on all these topics, as well as provide insight into the use of hormones as treatment tools in more controversial areas.

Advances of Endocrine and Metabolic Cardiovascular Outcomes: From Basic to Clinical Science by Si Jin,Ye Ding,Chengqi Xu,Qiulun Lu Pdf

Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) dependent hypertension, diabetes featured by hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, hyperhomocysteinemia, overweight or obesity etc., represent the major types of endocrine and metabolic disorders which contribute most to the development of atherosclerosis-based cardiovascular diseases. In clinical studies, these diseases comprise nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal cerebral infarction, or even cardiovascular death, termed 3 major adverse cardiovascular events (3p MACE). On one side, these endocrine or metabolic dysfunctions are the upstream risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, more and more antidiabetic drugs, e.g., glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, sodium-glucose transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) etc., are reported to have not only blood glucose lowering effects, but also have direct cardiovascular protective effects independent of the glucose lowering effects. Regarding the close relationship between endocrine or metabolic disorders and downstream cardiovascular outcomes, a call for a new subspeciality in internal medicine, cardiometabolic medicine, was proposed in Am J Med, 2019. Recently, many basic or clinical studies focused on endocrine and metabolic cardiovascular outcomes. The goal of this Research Topic is to compile recent advances concentrating in this area, both in terms of basic and clinical aspects, to further value the cardiovascular outcomes in treating endocrine and metabolic diseases.

Endocrinology of Cardiovascular Function by Ellis R. Levin,Jerry L. Nadler Pdf

Endocrinology of Cardiovascular Function is a fitting inauguration to the Endocrine Update Series. The aim of these publications is to provide the clinician with cutting edge, yet succinct, access to the latest advances in endocrinology. Historically, our understanding of hormonal disturbances was restricted to the classical secretory glands and their targets. As Endocrinology of Cardiovascular Function so aptly indicates, endocrinology is no longer constrained by our early physiologic understanding of glandular disorder. Endocrinology of Cardiovascular Function has set the standard of excellence for the future volumes in this series. Shlomo Melmed, M.D. Series Editor, Endocrine Update Growth factors such as IGF-1 play important roles in cardiovascular cell hypertrophy and the response to acute vascular injury. From another perspective, traditional endocrine hormones, such as estrogen, have been found to participate in preventing the development of atherosclerosis in women, acting through novel mechanisms on target vascular cells. Other `endocrine' hormones, such as PTHRP and adrenomedullin, also modulate cardiovascular and renovascular dynamic states, suggesting new roles for these peptides as vasodilators. This multi-authored text is dedicated to highlighting emerging and important new information regarding the endocrinology of the cardiovascular system. Ellis R. Levin, M.D.

Nutritional and Metabolic Bases of Cardiovascular Disease by Mario Mancini,Jose M. Ordovas,Gabrielle Riccardi,Paolo Rubba,Pasquale Strazzullo Pdf

Extraordinary advances in the understanding of the links between nutrition, metabolism, and cardiovascular disease have prompted a systematic reappraisal of knowledge in the field. As a result, it is now imperative that clinicians who care for patients with CVD or its key risk factors have a solid understanding of the often complex interrelationships between cardiovascular health and chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Written by a team of international thought leaders in cardiology, endocrinology, diabetology and nutritional science, this important new book: Examines and updates the role of obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, hypertension, thrombosis, and aging in atherogenesis Describes in detail the scientific and clinical evidence of the etiopathogenesis of ischemic heart disease as well as of peripheral and cerebrovascular disease Focuses on the 6 topics that will be of greatest interest to readers: 1) general nutrition, 2) metabolic syndrome and diabetes, 3) hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis, 4) hypertension and cerebrovascular disease, 5) hemostasis and thrombosis, 6) aging Throughout the book, in clear and accessible text, contributors illuminate the close relationship between dietary habits, the metabolic processes of nutrients, and their impact on the cardiovascular system, always with an eye on how the physician can use this information to implement better cardiovascular prevention and improve patient care. Nutritional and Metabolic Bases of Cardiovascular Disease is ideal for those who need to update their knowledge of the links between nutrition, metabolism and CVD, from trainees, clinicians and clinical investigators in cardiovascular medicine to endocrinologists, diabetologists, and nutritionists.

Growth Hormone And The Heart by Andrea Giustina Pdf

Growth Hormone and the Heart endeavors to bring together knowledge that has been accumulated in the area of GH and the heart, from basic to clinical studies, by research groups working on this topic throughout the world. Lessons from different experimental models and from several human diseases (acromegaly, adult GH deficiency, heart failure) suggest to endocrinologists and cardiologists that GH may not only have a role in the physiology and pathophysiology of heart function, but that GH itself may have a place in the treatment of primary heart diseases (such as dilated cardiomyopathy) or of cardiac complications of hypopituitarism. Growth Hormone and the Heart will be a useful update of the research produced in the field of cardiovascular endocrinology. The Editors also hope that this book will serve as the primary step in the recognition of the wide physiological and clinical significance of GH and heart interactions.
