A Cowboy's Life by Mack Bryson Pdf

"Either the whisky goes or I go." These words were uttered by the author's great grandmother after a harrowing trip by riverboat and stagecoach to her new husband's ranch on the raw frontier of British Columbia's Cariboo country. This is a memoir about her great grandson's adventures and the hazards of herding cattle over unfamiliar territory into the huge alpine back-country of Empire Valley-BC's third largest ranch. Mack Bryson's entertaining stories of life as a cowboy and rancher provide a vivid portrait of the Canadian West as he moved from using horse-drawn equipment, to diesel tractors, to airplanes to get the challenging job done. A Cowboy's Life recounts one man's journey across a rapidly vanishing landscape. From crossing roaring rivers with cattle and horses, to getting bucked off into the rocks and knocked unconscious two weeks before his wedding, to forest fires burning up camping supplies, to fights with poachers who want him out of their way so they can hunt on private land, Mack tells the colourful story of his family, their beloved dogs and horses, and the ranching life. This is an amazing story, told with humour and grace, about a young man's adventures that saw him achieve success in an industry where one misstep could ruin him and his family....

The Ranch on the Cariboo by Alan Fry Pdf

It was the summer of ’43 on a Cariboo ranch. He was 12 and had to become a man. If you were a man, you could become a cowboy. Join the author on this nostalgic look back on the joys, frustrations and observations of growing up and discovering where he belongs. Excerpt from Eldon Lee's foreword: “This book by Alan Fry is probably the best book ever written on ranch life in the Cariboo. His account of everyday events is so perceptive and so true to the mark that all we country types yearn to re-experience its joys, and its miseries. The Ranch on the Cariboo is a good book and while it may not make a pretty sight to the tractor jockeys, by damn it is authentic; I should know because I was raised on a similar ranch just 18 miles north.”

Drugstore Cowgirl by Patricia Joy MacKay Pdf

In 1964, Patricia MacKay immigrated to Canada from England in search of the wild-open lands and cowboy culture that captivated her as a child. In the 1960s, the Wild West was still alive and kicking in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, although it had been tamed—a little. Old-time hospitality and helping anyone in need was the acknowledged way of life. Pat learned the Cariboo-Chilcotin way of life first hand by spending her summers working on guest ranches and finding other jobs to keep her occupied during the winter. From learning how to cook on the job to kitchen disasters and successes, roundups, branding, square dances and falling in love, she slowly gained acceptance into the tight-knit communities of BC’s Interior. Ranching meant long hours, hard work, and a lifestyle all its own. Entertainment was homemade. There were rodeos, dances, and music around campfires in the summer and ice hockey, tobogganing, and parties in the winter. Sadly, that way of life is gradually disappearing, but this book relives the way things were between 1964 and 1976; it tells of a unique brand of people from a variety of backgrounds who made this part of the west their home.

Corky Williams by Sage Birchwater,Corky Williams,Jeanine Seals Williams Pdf

Originally from Texas, Corky and his wife, Jeanine, moved from Los Angeles to Anahim Lake, BC, to become ranchers. Corky had grown up on a ranch along the Mexican border before heading to LA to work in the film industry. After a freak accident at the Anahim Lake Stampede, he was unable to continue life as a rancher, so he returned to his previous career onstage and in film. Getting chosen to perform at Expo 86 in Vancouver was the big break he needed. From there he landed parts in shows like CBC's The Beachcombers and CTV's Bordertown. After Corky and Jeanine split up in 1990, Corky moved back to Texas to work in theatre productions with his brother Jaston Williams, and he performed on some of the major stages across the United States. In 2007, Corky, longing for the wide-open spaces of BC's Cariboo, moved back to Williams Lake. Corky became known as one of Western Canada's most beloved cowboy poets, performing his spoken word stories and poetry across the province.

Looking Back at the Cariboo-Chilcotin with Irene Stangoe by Irene Stangoe Pdf

As a complement to her popular book Cariboo-Chilcotin: Pioneer People and Places, Irene Stangoe has crafted a second collection of stories about the BC Interior's pioneers and the trails they blazed. In 26 separate tales she introduces a mosaic of personalities and events that spans 120 years. Stangoe fondly recalls the Indian Girls' Pipe Band, the world-famous MacKinnon sisters, the amazing ice-fishing secrets of Lac la Hache and more. Irene Stangoe has been "looking back" at the Cariboo-Chilcotin for almost half a century. Originally drawn to the region from her Burnaby-New Westminster roots in 1950, when she and her husband, Clive, bought the Williams Lake Tribune, Irene filled in as reporter, community editor, columnist, advertising salesperson and just about anywhere else she was needed until the newspaper was sold in 1973. In 1975, unable to fully retire, Irene established her "Looking Back" column at the Tribune and soon gained recognition as one of the most readable history writers in the weekly newspaper field. Between 1986 and 1991, she was awarded a first place and two seconds in the annual Best Historical Writing Competition.

Heart of the Cariboo-Chilcotin by Karla Decker Pdf

Another installment in the story of British Columbia's Cariboo-Chilcotin region, this book is a delightful collection of spirited tales by the area's most talented authors, plus a couple of 'outsiders.' Joining well-known Cariboo favorites Rich Hobson, Paul St. Pierre and Eric Collier are Barry Broadfoot and his touching tribute to Cariboo legend Fred Lindsay, historian/journalist Bruce Ramsey and his description of Barkerville's Chinatown, and pioneer Bill Hong and his account of what was done with Barkerville's deceased Chinese residents. From Edith Beeson's Dunlevey comes a gripping eyewitness play-by-play of a near-fatal Aboriginal wrestling match in 1859. Other stories include pioneer and wilderness lover Lutie Ulrich Cochran's perky tale of her mischievous temporary pet Flash the Weasel, and a tender vignette about a loon family by Will D. Jenkins Sr., a Chilcotin pioneer who penned his memoir, Chilcotin Diary, at the age of 98. New stories by old favourites Irene Stangoe, Hilary Place and Eldon Lee mingle with gems of wry Cariboo humor by Doc Holley, Chilco Choate and Fred Lindsay.

Bronc Busters and Hay Sloops by Ken Mather Pdf

Bronc Busters and Hay Sloops tells the story of ranching in the West from the beginning of the Great War until 1960. Cowboy soldiers, bronc busters, First Nations, upper-crust Englishmen and the strong, capable women of ranching country . . . theirs are the stories told in this book. Some of these characters are larger than life, such as: Joe Coutlee, cow boss of the Douglas Lake Ranch, whose booming voice gave him the nickname “Roaring Bill” Grover Hance, who roped one of his men and tied him to a tree until he sobered up Florence “Bunch” Trudeau, whose pet moose got a little too big for comfort Ollie Matheson, one of the only women to ride in the Williams Lake Stampede’s death-defying Mountain Race Anne Paxton, who tended cattle, guided big-game hunters, ran pack horses and a ranch; Bill Arnold, who could ride “anything that wore hide.” Ken takes readers inside sprawling ranches, which were self-contained communities in themselves, and small family-run homesteads scratched out of the wilderness. Like his first book on ranching history, Buckaroos and Mudpups, this is an engaging look at fascinating times and the people who made them so.

A Western Doctor's Odyssey by Eldon Lee Pdf

This is the story of Dr. Eldon Lee and his first practice in Hazelton, BC. Lee was the region's first obstetrician, and he delivered more than 4,500 babies. In an era of corporate medicine and malpractice insurance, Lee's story is a refreshing reminder of what doctoring is all about. In the 1940s, Eldon left the family ranch to join the air force. He returned to ranching with brother Todd after the war only to discover needs that his rural world could not satisfy. At 25, he headed for Seattle, where the University of Washington Medical School awaited. Seattle's King County and Vancouver's General and Shaughnessy hospitals prepared him for his lifelong odyssey.

Buckaroos and Mud Pups by Ken Mather Pdf

Remarkable cattle drives, famous ranches and legendary characters are at the heart of Ken Mather's account of the early days of ranching in British Columbia. These are stories about drovers, ranchers, cowboys and "mud pups" (the remittance men of the ranching industry). You'll meet such people as: the flamboyant Harper brothers, drovers who went on to become the biggest landowners in BC, with interests in the Harper, Perry, Hat Creek and famous Gang ranches Johnny Wilson, one of the most successful ranchers in the industry, who became known as the "BC Cattle King" Jim Madden, nicknamed "Big Kid" for his exuberant personality and childish innocence and whose simple lifestyle and colourful adventures made him famous in the Nicola and surrounding valleys Coutts Marjoribanks, a mud pup whose skills as a cowboy—and his exploits, such as riding his horse up the steep steps and into the Kalamalka Hotel bar—far outshone his talents as the ranch manager his rich family forced him to be. The story begins at the time of BC's first gold rush, and the start of a decade that would see more than 22,000 head of cattle brought into the colony. The author takes readers through to 1914, by which time ranching in the BC Interior had become big business. Complete with informative tidbits about the cowboy's tools of the trade, Buckaroos and Mud Pups is an entertaining look at fascinating times and the men who made them so.

Never Shoot a Stampede Queen by Mark Leiren-Young Pdf

Winner of the 2009 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour The cops wanted to shoot me, my bosses thought I was a Bolshevik, and a local lawyer warned me that some people I was writing about might try to test the strength of my skull with a steel pipe. What more could any young reporter hope for from his first real job? The night Mark Leiren-Young drove into Williams Lake, British Columbia, in 1985 to work as a reporter for the venerable Williams Lake Tribune, he arrived on the scene of an armed robbery. And that was before things got weird. For a 22-year-old from Vancouver, a stint in the legendary Cariboo town was a trip to another world and another era. From the explosive opening, where Mark finds himself in a courtroom just a few feet away from a defendant with a bomb strapped to his chest, to the case of a plane that crashed without its pilot on board, Never Shoot a Stampede Queen is an unforgettable comic memoir of a city boy learning about—and learning to love—life in a cowboy town.
