Baseball and the Blame Game by John Billheimer Pdf

Most baseball fans know what links Fred Merkle, Fred Snodgrass, Mickey Owen and Bill Buckner. It's a pantheon of public failure. They would be harder put to say what links Eric Byrnes, Tony Fernandez, and Babe Ruth, though these players made misplays every bit as egregious. In this smart, highly readable history of scapegoating, John Billheimer identifies the elements that combine to condemn one player to a life sentence while another gets a wrist slap for the same offense. As it turns out, the difference between a lower-case e in some forgotten box score and a lifetime of ignominy can hinge on a number of factors, including timing, geography, reputation, misunderstanding, media bias, and just plain bad luck.

Developer's Dilemma by Casey O'Donnell Pdf

An examination of work—including the organization of work and the market forces that surround it—through the lens of the collaborative practice of game development. Rank-and-file game developers bring videogames from concept to product, and yet their work is almost invisible, hidden behind the famous names of publishers, executives, or console manufacturers. In this book, Casey O’Donnell examines the creative collaborative practice of typical game developers. His investigation of why game developers work the way they do sheds light on our understanding of work, the organization of work, and the market forces that shape (and are shaped by) media industries. O’Donnell shows that the ability to play with the underlying systems—technical, conceptual, and social—is at the core of creative and collaborative practice, which is central to the New Economy. When access to underlying systems is undermined, so too is creative collaborative process. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in game studios in the United States and India, O’Donnell stakes out new territory empirically, conceptually, and methodologically. Mimicking the structure of videogames, the book is divided into worlds, within which are levels; and each world ends with a boss fight, a “rant” about lessons learned and tools mastered. O’Donnell describes the process of videogame development from pre-production through production, considering such aspects as experimental systems, “socially mandatory” overtime, and the perpetual startup machine that exhausts young, initially enthusiastic workers. He links work practice to broader systems of publishing, manufacturing, and distribution; introduces the concept of a privileged “actor-intra-internetwork”; and describes patent and copyright enforcement by industry and the state.

Hugh Casey by Lyle Spatz Pdf

Hugh Casey was one of the most colorful members of the iconic Brooklyn Dodgers of the 1940s, a team that took part in four great pennant races, the first National League playoff series, and two exciting World Series over the course of Casey’s career. That famed team included many outsized personalities, including executives Larry MacPhail and Branch Rickey, manager Leo Durocher, and players like Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Dixie Walker, Joe Medwick, and Pete Reiser. In Hugh Casey: The Triumphs and Tragedies of a Brooklyn Dodger, Lyle Spatz details Casey’s life and career, from his birth in Atlanta to his suicide in that same city thirty-seven years later. Spatz includes such moments as Casey’s famous “pitch that got away” in Game Four of the 1941 World Series, the numerous brawls and beanball wars in which Casey was frequently involved, and the Southern-born Casey’s reaction to Jackie Robinson joining the Dodgers. Spatz also reveals how Casey helped to redefine the role of the relief pitcher, twice leading the National League in saves and twice finishing second—if saves had been an official statistic during his lifetime. While this book focuses on Casey’s baseball career in Brooklyn, Spatz also covers Casey’s often-tragic personal life. He not only ran into trouble with the IRS, he also got into a fistfight with Ernest Hemingway and was charged in a paternity suit that was decided against him. Featuring personal interviews with Casey’s son and with former teammate Carl Erskine, this book will fascinate and inform fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers and baseball historians alike.

More than 150,000 major league baseball games were played in the 20th century. Here are ranked the 100 greatest, the very best (less than 1/10th of 1 percent) of the contests. They feature brilliant individual pitching performances, pitching duels, remarkable individual batting achievements, team offensive explosions, mind-numbing comebacks, multiple lead changes, team rivalries and heroics in final at-bats. The games are from the regular season, pennant races, playoffs, and the World Series. The inclusion of some games might be surprising, but all of them twanged or hammered the nerves of both spectators and participants.

The Night Casey Was Born by John Evangelist Walsh Pdf

The acclaimed biographer offers a social history of the poem that helped America fall in love with baseball—a lively story that “hits it out of the park” (The Baltimore Sun). The sport that came to be known as America’s Pastime was still in its infancy when a journalist for the San Francisco Examiner wrote a ballad extolling the drama and excitement of the game. Ernest L. Thayer’s Casey at the Bat made its first appearance in the Examiner on June 3, 1888. But the immortal tale of Mighty Casey was destined to become an American phenomenon when star of the New York stage DeWolf Hopper first read it to a rapt audience at Wallack’s Theater later that year. For the first time, John Evangelist Walsh tells the story behind the poem and its young journalist author, its unlikely journey from California to New York, and the wave of baseball mania that made it one of the most famous poems in the country. The Night Casey was Born is a portrait of America in the earliest years of its love affair with baseball.

Summary of Kathryn Casey's A Warrant to Kill by Everest Media, Pdf

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The police radioed that a cop had shot a civilian. Someone from Civil Rights made the scene. They’d done a lot of these investigations together, too many, and too often in the middle of the night. #2 After the walk-through, Smyth went straight to the jail and demanded the tape from the 911 dispatchers. He had a strong feeling that the tape would be important, and evidence of murder. #3 Susan White was a happy child, but she was also a special one. She seemed to have inherited her mother’s slim figure, fine features, and blue eyes. She was doted on by her parents. #4 The Harrison sisters were extremely close, and they never really had any rivalries or sibling one-upmanship. They were always content with their place in the world, until Susan felt frustrated and wanted more out of life.
