Excerpt from Cataloging for Small Libraries During the past ten years the author has lectured on the sub jcet of cataloging before many an audience of trained as well as untrained, experienced as well as inexperienced librarians of small libraries, students preparing for such work, trustees of small libraries, and others. The questions asked at such gatherings prove conclusively that the small library does not by any means presuppose a collection of simple books, as is too often taken for granted. If that were so, the simple directions given in the first edition of this work would need no amplification. Experience, however, has shown otherwise, and even trained librarians find themselves timidly doubtful at times in deciding a point, because lack of practice, experience and precedent are wanting to inspire the necessary confidence. Excerpt from Library Cataloguing Some years ago I prepared a Manual of Library Cataloguing, which met with more acceptance than was expected, and has been out of print for some time. Upon considering requests for a new edition, I concluded that a book upon somewhat different lines would be more likely to meet the present requirements of librarians and library assistants - this volume is the result. No pretence is made that the work is exhaustive or complete, but it is hoped that it will serve as a practical and useful introduction to the several codes of cataloguing rules. The statements made in it are not meant to be dogmatic, but they indicate the lines upon which good and accurate work is to be accomplished. As the illustrative examples were chosen from every-day books, and are worked out as simply as possible, they should be found useful by beginners; especially in preparing for the examinations of the Library Association in this subject. Excerpt from Buying List of Books for Small Libraries As the following list is intended merely as an aid in buying, regular cataloging rules have not been followed. It should there fore not be used as a guide for the form of the author's name. When there is a choice, the best known form of the author's name or a well-known pseudonym is used. In this edition there is no change from the character of the first list. The same general arrangement is retained and in most cases the same subject headings used. Every class is thoroughly revised and while there is a slight increase in the number of titles in sociology, science, useful arts and amusements, it results in a net increase of but 78 titles in the entire list. The fewest changes are in the list of children's books. One or two good inexpensive editions of standard books are added and some of the strikingly good stories of the past two years included. In a small library it is not important to buy the very latest child's story. To buy the best must be the aim of a library in the purchase of its children's books. Excerpt from Cataloging Rules: Prepared for the Course in Elementary Cataloging, New York State Library School The following code of rules is a revision of the stenciled dirce tions used during the past three years in the junior course in cataloging in the New York State Library School. The stencils were first prepared to save the time previously devoted to note taking in class, and to furnish fuller information than could be given in class or otherwise be provided in the limited time devoted to the course, with a view to furnishing not only the instructions necessary for class exercises but a compilation useful for reference in later work. With these aims in mind the attempt was made to answer as many as possible of the questions which had arisen in the author's experience in the actual work of cataloging and in years of contact with Library School students. As a result numerous details have been included which may seem at first sight petty and superfluous but which have shown themselves to be very substantial stumbling blocks to persons first struggling with the actual problems. Recognizing that different local conditions call for different treat ment and that this fact is in danger of being overlooked by beginners trained along a particular line, an attempt has been made by explanatory statements and by suggestions of alternative methods, to open the way to a broader view and to make the rules adaptable to varying conditions. While the directions are prepared specifically for the work in the Library School it is hoped that the attempt at elasticity will also make them of use in a wider field. The plan of work is based on the A. L. A. Catalog rules, to which (as well as to Cutter's Rules for a dictionary catalog, 4th edition, quoted as Cutter) frequent reference is made, the intention being in no way to take the place of the A. L. A. Code, but rather to serve as an introduction to it and enable the students to use it with a better understanding. No attempt has been made to take up all the rules in that code, but mainly those topics which are commonly met in the work of cataloging, in the belief that students well grounded in these should, through the very full provision made in the A. It is more and more forced on the attention of the library that numerically only a small portion of the children of Washington are being satisfactorily reached by the main library and its one branch. It is to the schools, reaching every locality, to which the library looks for help in solving the problem. A book in the hands of a teacher and recommended by her carries great weight. There fore by sending small libraries to all of the schools, more par ticularly the distant ones, we hope to reach the right child with the right book at the right time.
