Cataloging for Small Libraries (Classic Reprint) by Theresa Hitchler Pdf

Excerpt from Cataloging for Small Libraries During the past ten years the author has lectured on the sub jcet of cataloging before many an audience of trained as well as untrained, experienced as well as inexperienced librarians of small libraries, students preparing for such work, trustees of small libraries, and others. The questions asked at such gatherings prove conclusively that the small library does not by any means presuppose a collection of simple books, as is too often taken for granted. If that were so, the simple directions given in the first edition of this work would need no amplification. Experience, however, has shown otherwise, and even trained librarians find themselves timidly doubtful at times in deciding a point, because lack of practice, experience and precedent are wanting to inspire the necessary confidence. Therefore, though this treatise is not intended to be at all dogmatic, I have attempted in this book to outline very fully, but in simple language, with not too embarrassing a number of illustrative examples, the best methods of treating various problems in cataloging, the complex as well as the simple ones, for the librarian of the small library who is ambitious to have her library a well cataloged one in as systematic, useful, yet economical a way as possible. Library Cataloguing (Classic Reprint) by J. Henry Quinn Pdf

Excerpt from Library Cataloguing Some years ago I prepared a Manual of Library Cataloguing, which met with more acceptance than was expected, and has been out of print for some time. Upon considering requests for a new edition, I concluded that a book upon somewhat different lines would be more likely to meet the present requirements of librarians and library assistants - this volume is the result. No pretence is made that the work is exhaustive or complete, but it is hoped that it will serve as a practical and useful introduction to the several codes of cataloguing rules. The statements made in it are not meant to be dogmatic, but they indicate the lines upon which good and accurate work is to be accomplished. As the illustrative examples were chosen from every-day books, and are worked out as simply as possible, they should be found useful by beginners; especially in preparing for the examinations of the Library Association in this subject. I am indebted to my friend Mr. Frank Pacy, City Librarian of Westminster, for reading my proofs and suggesting many improvements, although I am sure he would not care to accept responsibility for all the views expressed or the mode of expressing them. Buying List of Books for Small Libraries (Classic Reprint) by Zaidee Brown Pdf

Excerpt from Buying List of Books for Small Libraries As the following list is intended merely as an aid in buying, regular cataloging rules have not been followed. It should there fore not be used as a guide for the form of the author's name. When there is a choice, the best known form of the author's name or a well-known pseudonym is used. In this edition there is no change from the character of the first list. The same general arrangement is retained and in most cases the same subject headings used. Every class is thoroughly revised and while there is a slight increase in the number of titles in sociology, science, useful arts and amusements, it results in a net increase of but 78 titles in the entire list. The fewest changes are in the list of children's books. One or two good inexpensive editions of standard books are added and some of the strikingly good stories of the past two years included. In a small library it is not important to buy the very latest child's story. To buy the best must be the aim of a library in the purchase of its children's books. Practical Handbook of Modern Library Cataloging (Classic Reprint) by William Warner Bishop Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Handbook of Modern Library Cataloging In setting examinations in library science, including cataloging, for the United States Civil Service Commission for several years, I was constantly struck by the absence in our professional literature of any manual of the actual practice of cataloging. There are numerous codes of rules and articles on the theory of cataloging. But something which should tell a student of library administration just what has to be done under modem conditions and why it should be done seemed lacking. I have accordingly written this brief handbook in an endeavor to supply this need. To librarians and catalogers trained in their work by long years of service much of what is here set forth will doubtless seem very obvious and commonplace. I have had constantly in mind two sorts of persons by whom librarians have been much besought for years past for information as to "how to do it." One group - and by far the larger - is composed of young people entering on the professional study of library processes either in library schools or without formal instruction. Cataloging as an Asset by William Warner Bishop Pdf

Excerpt from Cataloging as an Asset: An Address to the New York State Library School, May 1, 1915 Instead of attempting to answer this question dog matically, we may perhaps find it profitable to glance hastily at some phases of What is popularly referred to in professional circles as the library movement. Those of us whose memory goes back even a quarter of a century or who have studied at all carefully the his tory of libraries in the United States have seen, or noted, a good many changes. The library world has had its Shifting fashions, not to say its fads of the hour. And, just as in more common matters of clothes and manners, the striking novelties are sure to attract a good deal Of attention and to get themselves much advertised. In the earlier years of the public library movement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Small Library Cataloging by Herbert H. Hoffman Pdf

Completely updated, with a new section on using the computer in the cataloging function, this new edition of a classic will be a welcome tool for the volunteer or paraprofessional in a small library. Covering the essentials in clear nontechnical language, Hoffman explains the how and why of arranging publications, the principles of cataloging (including description, main and added entries, analytics, the shelf list, cross references, and filing), and online records. Nearly 100 examples illustrate the cataloging practice. Why do you need a shelf list? What is an authority file? Easy to understand and practical, this gem illuminates the world of monographs, series, irregular serials, uniform titles, simple and complex subject headings, tracings, and location codes. Even the world of the small library is startlingly complex--Hoffman's guide will simplify it. Reviews of previous editions: "Hoffman's guide to simplified cataloging practice will be a great help...this handbook lays out the options of collection organization clearly and in everyday language." -Booklist "Because of its emphasis on fundamentals, rigorous reasoning, and its readable style, the book is also helpful for library school students as well as for practicing librarians." -Reference & Research Book News "...will provide its intended reader, the nonprofessional or volunteer in charge of a small library, with solid, well-organized information necessary to catalog a collection systematically." Cataloging Rules by Jennie D. Fellows Pdf

Excerpt from Cataloging Rules: Prepared for the Course in Elementary Cataloging, New York State Library School The following code of rules is a revision of the stenciled dirce tions used during the past three years in the junior course in cataloging in the New York State Library School. The stencils were first prepared to save the time previously devoted to note taking in class, and to furnish fuller information than could be given in class or otherwise be provided in the limited time devoted to the course, with a view to furnishing not only the instructions necessary for class exercises but a compilation useful for reference in later work. With these aims in mind the attempt was made to answer as many as possible of the questions which had arisen in the author's experience in the actual work of cataloging and in years of contact with Library School students. As a result numerous details have been included which may seem at first sight petty and superfluous but which have shown themselves to be very substantial stumbling blocks to persons first struggling with the actual problems. Recognizing that different local conditions call for different treat ment and that this fact is in danger of being overlooked by beginners trained along a particular line, an attempt has been made by explanatory statements and by suggestions of alternative methods, to open the way to a broader view and to make the rules adaptable to varying conditions. While the directions are prepared specifically for the work in the Library School it is hoped that the attempt at elasticity will also make them of use in a wider field. The plan of work is based on the A. L. A. Catalog rules, to which (as well as to Cutter's Rules for a dictionary catalog, 4th edition, quoted as Cutter) frequent reference is made, the intention being in no way to take the place of the A. L. A. Code, but rather to serve as an introduction to it and enable the students to use it with a better understanding. No attempt has been made to take up all the rules in that code, but mainly those topics which are commonly met in the work of cataloging, in the belief that students well grounded in these should, through the very full provision made in the A. L. A. Rules, be able to adapt themselves to any ordinary conditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Graded and Annotated Catalog of Books in the Public Library of the District of Columbia, for Use in the Schools of the City (Classic Reprint) by District Of Columbia Public Library Pdf

Excerpt from Graded and Annotated Catalog of Books in the Public Library of the District of Columbia, for Use in the Schools of the City The Public Library of the District of Columbia furnishes to the Public Schools of the city, through the school stations and through the cooperation of the grade teachers, 'many thousands of books during the school year. It is more and more forced on the attention of the library that numerically only a small portion of the children of Washington are being satisfactorily reached by the main library and its one branch. It is to the schools, reaching every locality, to which the library looks for help in solving the problem. A book in the hands of a teacher and recommended by her carries great weight. There fore by sending small libraries to all of the schools, more par ticularly the distant ones, we hope to reach the right child with the right book at the right time. Any teacher may select or request the library to select one book for each child in her class or any number of books up to fifty, which will be sent to her by the library and called for at the end of two months, after notification, unless she desires to retain them for a longer period. For the convenience of the teachers and to advise them of the material to be had for supplementary work and for pleasurable reading this graded and annotated catalog of books has been prepared. It has been arranged by subject that the material on the work being studied may be readily found. There is also an author index. Many of the books listed in a certain grade will be found useful in a lower or higher grade, the grading being only suggestive.
