Catherine de Hueck Doherty by Catherine de Hueck Doherty Pdf

Catherine de Hueck Doherty (1896-1985), a Russian-born aristocrat who has recently been proposed for canonization, emigrated to North America, dedicated her life to promoting "the gospel without compromise." Her vision combined a deep spirituality with a commitment to social justice. One of her early projects was the Harlem-based Friendship House, which attracted a young Thomas Merton. Later, with her second husband, Eddie Doherty, she established Madonna House in Combermere, Ontario. Though Roman Catholic, Catherine drew on her Russian roots and helped popularize the concept of Poustinia (the Russian word for desert)a place where a person meets God through solitude, prayer, and fasting. These writings, drawn from 25 books, highlight her distinctive spirituality, with its emphasis on the presence of God, the practice of prayer, a love for the church, and a deep apprehension of the social dimension of the gospel.

Staritsa by Donald A. Guglielmi Pdf

The present book is the first work to highlight Catherine Doherty's vocation to spiritual motherhood. Drawing upon primary archival sources, the author traces Catherine's development as a staritsa, or spiritual mother in the Russian-Eastern tradition. Of particular interest are the chapters dealing with Catherine's exercise of spiritual motherhood for priests and laity alike. Previously unpublished letters of spiritual direction between Catherine and her major spiritual directors offer the reader a privileged glimpse into the soul of this servant of God and her spiritual children, as she grows in her vocation as staritsa. For example, in one striking letter, Catherine describes how she guided a disillusioned young priest who was struggling with a drinking problem and temptations involving young women, and was bordering on despair: "With clenched teeth I sailed into him, first gently, almost caressingly calling him back to Christ he once loved, then more sternly, then quietly. . . . He left full of thanks and some hope . . . ."

Comrades Stumbling Along by Robert A. Wild Pdf

Catherine Doherty and Dorothy Day had a beautiful adventure of friendship together. This presentation of their companionship through their letters is meant to supply a somewhat forgotten chapter in the history of the apostolic laity of North America. The friendship of these two was very deep, holy, and lasting. They had different personalities and approaches to almost everything. Their relationship, however, as proved by the correspondence between them over many years (published for the first time in this book), is a profound example of how Christ can bind together people of very diverse temperaments and backgrounds and unite them in love by the power of the Holy Spirit, thus inspiring us all.

Strannik by Catherine Doherty Pdf

Strannik is the Russian word for "pilgrim," one with a vocation-a unique, holy calling. Pilgrimage is more than something you `do.' `Being a pilgrim' consumes all of you. The pilgrim is to "be the Gospel and to preach it with his words and with his being." In Strannik, Catherine shows that pilgrimage is not just something for a few spiritual ascetics with wanderlust. Even less does it resemble the modern tourist-style `pilgrimages' that try to cover as many holy places as possible in the briefest time possible. Rather, the true strannik begins by looking within the self, where God already is. While the author does tell us about external pilgrimages such as she herself experienced as a child in Russia, the pilgrimages she is writing about are principally interior. Pilgrimage comes out of a quest for God. Catherine speaks of the "nostalgia for paradise" which all human beings have experienced since Adam and Eve. Without Christ we cannot complete our journey. "Christ was the pilgrim who pilgrimed from the bosom of the Father to the hearts of men and women."

Urodivoi by Catherine Doherty Pdf

Learn to take risks for Christ and his Gospel. Urodivoi is a Russian word meaning "holy foolishness." In this book Catherine Doherty expresses her calling to this aspect of Russian spirituality, and calls us to become fools for Christ. "Anything and everything we do must be approached with the foolishness of God, with an identification with Christ. Can you imagine anything more foolish than hanging on a cross? We are invited to open the doors of our hearts to the Lord of Love, to the foolishness of the Cross, and to become a fool for the sake of Christ, even as he became a fool for our sake. For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom."

Fifty-two readings on living in intentional Christian community to spark group discussion. Gold Medal Winner, 2017 Illumination Book Awards, Christian Living Silver Medal Winner, 2017 Benjamin Franklin Award in Religion, Independent Book Publishers Association Why, in an age of connectivity, are our lives more isolated and fragmented than ever? And what can be done about it? The answer lies in the hands of God's people. Increasingly, today's Christians want to be the church, to follow Christ together in daily life. From every corner of society, they are daring to step away from the status quo and respond to Christ's call to share their lives more fully with one another and with others. As they take the plunge, they are discovering the rich, meaningful life that Jesus has in mind for all people, and pointing the church back to its original calling: to be a gathered, united community that demonstrates the transforming love of God. Of course, such a life together with others isn't easy. The selections in this volume are, by and large, written by practitioners--people who have pioneered life in intentional community and have discovered in the nitty-gritty of daily life what it takes to establish, nurture, and sustain a Christian community over the long haul. Whether you have just begun thinking about communal living, are already embarking on sharing life with others, or have been part of a community for many years, the pieces in this collection will encourage, challenge, and strengthen you. The book's fifty-two chapters can be read one a week to ignite meaningful group discussion. Contributors include: John F. Alexander, Eberhard Arnold, J. Apostolic Farming by Catherine de Hueck Doherty Pdf

The earth is weeping...How can we heal it? The heavy treads of our modern machinery pound the earth into submission--our society has become expert at efficiently taking from the earth, but what do we give the earth in return? Is this the proper stewardship of the earth that God has entrusted us with? * Concerns are growing about genetically engineered "superfood" and harmful pesticide use. * The current panic over "Mad Cow" and "Foot and Mouth" diseases are a chilling example of the price which we may all pay for our livestock being fed with the cheapest feed instead of what is proper and nutritious. In this remarkably prophetic work, Catherine Doherty helps shed some light on these important issues, with practical, down-to-earth guidance for farmers everywhere--whether you are a backyard gardener or industry professional.
