Luke believes he has his life figured out…and then he meets Theo. It should have been simple—a summer spent with his girlfriend Zara at her family’s holiday cottage in Cornwall. Seventeen-year-old Luke Savage jumps at the chance, envisioning endless hours of sunbathing on the private beach and riding the waves on his beloved surfboard. He isn’t interested in love. Though his rugged good looks and lazy charm mean he can have his pick of girls, he has no intention of falling for anyone. Nothing prepares Luke for his reaction to Theo, the sensitive Oxford undergraduate who is Zara’s cousin and closest friend. All at once, he is plunged along a path of desire and discovery that has him questioning everything he thought he knew about himself. No one, especially Zara, must find out; what he and Theo have is too new, too fragile. But as the deceit spirals beyond their control, people are bound to get hurt, Luke most of all.

Caught by Lisa Moore Pdf

The acclaimed author of February “combin[es] the complexity of the best literary fiction with the page-turning compulsive readability of a thriller” (National Post). Lisa Moore, a “Canada Reads” winner and a New Yorker Best Book of the Year author, introduces a dangerously appealing new protagonist unlike any she’s imagined before: a modern Billy the Kid . . . Caught begins with a prison break. Twenty-five-year-old David Slaney, locked up on charges of marijuana possession, escapes his cell and sprints to the highway. There, he is picked up by a friend of his sister’s and transported to a strip bar where he survives his first night on the run. But evading the cops isn’t his only objective; Slaney intends to track down his old partner, Hearn, and get back into the drug business. Along the way, Slaney’s fugitive journey across Canada rushes vibrantly to life as he visits an old flame and adopts numerous guises to outpace authorities: hitchhiker, houseguest, student, lover. When he finally reunites with Hearn just steps ahead of a detective hell-bent on making a high-profile arrest, their scheme sends Slaney to Mexico, Colombia, and back again on an epic quest fueled by luck, charm, and unbending conviction. In Caught, “Moore combines the propulsive storytelling of a beach-book thriller with the skilled use of language and penetrating insights of literary fiction. She pulls it off seamlessly, creating a vivid, compulsively readable tale” (Penthouse). “Propulsive, adrenalin-drenched.”—The Globe and Mail “Exhilarating . . . a memorably oddball and alluring novel that’s simultaneously breezy, taut, funny, and insightful.”—The Vancouver Sun

Caught in the Act by Joseph Litvak Pdf

In Caught in the Act, Joseph Litvak reveals not only the surprising wealth of theatrical themes in the canonical nineteenth-century English novel, but also the complex and over-determined politics of this theatricality. Nineteenth-century fiction is typically understood as enshrining the bourgeois values of privacy, domesticity, subjectivity, and sincerity. But Litvak demonstrates that private experience in the novels of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot, and Henry James is in fact a rigorous enactment of a public script that constructs normative gender and class identities. These novels also display extravagant theatrical forms like travesty, transvestism, charade, and carnival. The theatricality enforces social norms at the same time that it provides ways for novelists to resist them. Litvak thus challenges recent interpretations of the nineteenth-century novel as a disciplinary apparatus. His approach encourages a rethinking of the genre and its varied cultural contexts in all their instability and ambivalence. In addition to a new interpretation, this rethinking offers a new, more frankly theatrical approach to interpretation itself. Litvak argues that the theatricality of the nineteenth-century novel anticipates the late twentieth-century strategies of feminist and gay critical performance.

Caught in the Net by Kimberly S. Young Pdf

"I don't even help [my children] with their homework in the evening because I'm in the chat rooms, and I don't help put them to bed because I don't realize how late it is. I also don't help them get ready for school in the morning like I used to do because I'm checking my e-mail. And I just can't stop myself."-Raymond, an Internet addict. Internet addiction is real. Like alcoholism, drug addiction, or compulsive gambling, it has devastating effects on the lives of addicts and their families: divorce, job loss, falling productivity at work, failure in school, and, in extreme cases, criminal behavior. The problem has already reached epidemic proportions in the United States, and the number of "netaholics" continues to grow rapidly as more households and businesses go on-line. Yet, until now, no one from the mental health community has come forward with a specific description of Internet addiction and its effects or a strategy for treatment and recovery. In Caught in the Net, Kimberly Young shares the results of her three-year study of Internet abuse. Often using the words of the Internet addicts themselves, she presents the stories of dozens of lives that were shattered by an overwhelming compulsion to surf the Net, play MUD games, or chat with distant and invisible neighbors in the timeless limbo of cyberspace. Why is the Internet so seductive? What are the warning signs of Internet addiction? Is recovery possible? Dr. Young answers these questions and many more. She provides a questionnaire to help Net users determine whether they are addicts, and offers concrete steps to help problem users regulate Internet usage and devise a more balanced place for it in their daily lives. For Internet addicts as well as their parents, spouses, friends, and employers, Caught in the Net offers guidance on where and how to seek help from counselors, therapists, and other professionals who take this affliction seriously. For mental health professionals, this book provides insights into the nature and causes of Internet addiction and encourages counselors and therapists to expand their addiction recovery programs to address the specific problems of Internet addicts. "Think that computer addiction is a joke? Think again. This groundbreaking book is the first to explore on-line addiction in a serious way and to consider the effects on individuals and their families. Caught in the Net is an important book for anyone who spends mornings and evenings connected to the Net."-Clifford Stoll, author of The Cuckoo's Egg and Silicon Snake Oil. "An excellent account of the dangers of the burgeoning Internet industry. Dr. Young carefully outlines the traps into which people can fall and offers pragmatic self-help suggestions. Caught in the Net is valuable for both consumers and the professionals who deal with them."-Maressa Hecht Orzack, PhD, Founder and Coordinator, Computer Addiction Services, McLean Hospital Lecturer, Harvard University Medical School "I don't mean to spend all my time this way, but I can't stop. It's the only place my opinion matters and I feel important."-bobage38.automechanic.internet.addict "I feel guilty about it, but when I tried to break free, I simply didn't have the strength....I'm a long-time smoker, but I've found the craving to go on the Internet first thing every morning is stronger than my urge to light a cigarette."-marylouage40.motheroffour.internet.addict "When you're talking about the Internet, you're talking about power. It's the most powerful information tool I have ever known. When I explore the on-line world, I feel like that robot in the movie Short Circuit. I need more input! More input!"-daveage28.militarytelecommunicationsexpert.internet.addict "I feel the rush every time my mind gets connected to this intensely powerful information whirlpool. Caught in Time: A Novel (Kendra Donovan Mysteries) by Julie McElwain Pdf

Still stranded in 1815, FBI agent Kendra Donovan finds herself on the trail of a vicious murderer with a shocking secret. October 1815: There is only one place Kendra Donovan wants to travel—back to her own time period in the twenty-first century. But since that’s not happening, she agrees instead to travel with her new guardian, the Duke of Aldridge, to one of his smaller estates in Lancashire. Their journey takes them through Yorkshire, a region whose breathtaking beauty masks a simmering violence brought on by the Industrial Revolution, which pits mill owner against worker. When Kendra and the Duke encounter a band of Luddites on a lonely, fog-shrouded road, the Duke informs the authorities in the nearby village of East Dingleford that mischief may have been done at the local mill. However, it isn’t just mischief but murder that is discovered, when the body of the mill manager, Mr. Stone, is found brutally bludgeoned to death in his office. The Constable is certain the radical-minded Luddites committed the murder. One look at the crime scene and Kendra knows they did not, prompting the Duke to shock the locals by volunteering their services to catch the real killer. Joined by lover Alec and Bow Street Runner Sam Kelly, Kendra must sort through the puzzle of Stone’s rather unsavory life, picking apart alibies and dissecting carefully created deceptions from a growing list of suspects. As a special agent for the FBI, Kendra thought she’d encountered every kind of evil. But when another, even more vicious murder rocks East Dingleford, Kendra realizes that they’re dealing with a stone-cold killer—one who has a shocking secret that he will do anything to protect.

Caught in an Avalanche by Pankaj Kumar Pdf

It was the autumn of year 1995, in the valley of Kashmir, the ancient land of saints and sages. The situation in the valley had taken a turn. In 1989, after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, insurgency broke out in Kashmir, a great number of militants got disengaged from Afghanistan. The ISI combined this force with indigenous militants and put them in the valley with arms and weapons. The period up till 1994 was one of great turmoil. A large number of youth were brainwashed and sent across the line of control for training in militant activities. By the midnineties, when the militancy was beginning to be tamed and democracy was set to return, the ISI made huge efforts once again to stall the democratic process. About that time, a young and dynamic army officer was deployed with his company in a small border village to stop the increased infiltration along the line of control. It was a task cut out for the zealous and tactically brilliant soldier. But it was not easy; soon he realized that military maneuvers dont always win battles. Life is an unending succession of conflicts. However, life is not about conflicts; it is about resolutions. The village and its people befriend the major. Amongst them are Rashida and her terrorist brother, Faisal, and the lovable young boy, Moinuddin. It is a story of lovean unusual romance between two people who are so different and diverse yet so similar at the core.
