Cavalry Scout by Dee Brown Pdf

A western saga of honor amid the nineteenth-century Indian wars from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. “I wished I was back in Texas and had never left there to end up scouting in such godforsaken country for an army dressed in blue.” Such are the sentiments of John Singleterry as this gripping tale begins in the snowy wilderness. Singleterry and his partner, Peter Dunreath, are sent to scout ahead of their battalion when they’re taken captive by two fighters from the Cheyenne, a tribe not known for taking prisoners. One fighter is an old medicine woman, suspicious and eager to kill, while the other, a beautiful mixed-race girl named Marisa, wants to wait. The women tell the scouts about their tribe’s decimation during its forced relocation, and of multiple promises that have been broken—stories that force Singleterry to face difficult questions of love and desertion. Written by an acclaimed chronicler of the drama of the American West and the conflicts between white men and Indians, this is a moving novel of torn loyalties set during one of the most tumultuous eras in Native American history. Cavalry Scout gives full-blooded reality to its time, and to both the settlers and natives at the heart of its story. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dee Brown including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Thomas Mitchem joined the United States Cavalry to serve his country and kill terrorists. What no one expected was the new Persian state to build a land army and blitz into its neighbors. Including Turkey, which would bring the United States into a full-scale high intensity conflict, it was not prepared for. Fortunately for the United States Army its cavalry scouts were.

Scouts Out! The Development Of Reconnaissance Units In Modern Armies [Illustrated Edition] by John J. McGrath Pdf

Illustrated with 60 maps, plans and diagrams Reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance are battlefield missions as old as military history itself and missions for which many armies have created specialized units to perform. In most cases, these units were trained, equipped, and used differently from the majority of an army’s fighting units. Horse cavalry performed these missions for centuries, for it had speed and mobility far in excess of main battle units. Once the horse was replaced by mechanization, however, the mobility advantage once enjoyed by the horse cavalry disappeared. Since the early 20th century, the search for the proper mix of equipment, the proper organization, and the proper employment of reconnaissance units has bedeviled armies around the world. This survey uses a diverse variety of historical cases to illustrate the enduring issues that surround the equipping, organizing, and employment of reconnaissance units. It seems that these specialized units are either too heavily or too lightly equipped and too narrowly specialized or too conventionally organized. Pre-war reconnaissance doctrines tend to undergo significant change once fighting begins, leading to post-conflict analysis that reconnaissance units were “misused” in one way or another. McGrath ends his study with an intriguing conclusion about the role that specialized reconnaissance units should have in the future that may surprise many readers.

Scouts In Contact by United States Army Pdf

Looking for innovative ways to train junior leaders in reconnaissance? Look no further. Vignettes, developed by the subject matter experts at NTC, lead teams through a variety of scenarios that will challenge and mature your young reconnaissance leaders' decision-making skills. Facilitator instructions guarantee you have the information needed to make you and your reconnaissance teams successful! The scout's purpose will not be fulfilled without making contact with the enemy. In most cases, the scout will do so with little to no notice, under the cover of darkness, over difficult terrain, all in the name of setting conditions for the success of the formation as a whole.Cobra Team has developed this handbook to provide commanders a tool to train young scouts to think through complex tactical problems and communicate clear, concise, and executable orders. This is not a guide on what to think, but a series of exercises to train the U.S. Army's doctrinal fundamentals in ambiguous, rapidly changing tactical situations. In the end, this handbook will increase junior leaders' ability how to think, while building their experience in a low, overhead training environment.

Cavalry Instruction by Capt R S Baden-Powell,R. Baden-Powell Pdf

COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED AT 220 PAGES! Following the success of his book "Scouting and Reconnaissance" the year before, Captain Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell of the British Army's 13th Hussars devised a complete training program for cavalry officers and NCOs. The result was "Cavalry Instruction" first published in 1885. Later becoming the founder of the worldwide Boy Scout movement, Baden-Powell's writing in "Cavalry Instruction" foreshadows the coming of the Boy Scouts, particularly the "Camping" and "Patrolling and Scouting" sections of the book. This book reproduces the more extensive, and very rare 220 page first edition of "Cavalry Instruction". The text of later editions was abridged and condensed and the various helpful diagrams which are found in this first edition were deleted. With all original illustrations, this new paperback replica edition brings this exceptionally rare book to a 21st Century audience. US Army Long-Range Patrol Scout in Vietnam 1965-71 by Gordon L. Rottman Pdf

The Vietnamese knew the Long-Range Patrol Scouts as “the men with green faces,” a reference to the camouflage paint that they used. Operating in patrols of four to six men these men were like ghosts – scouting far behind enemy lines. This book examines the Long-Range Patrol Scout's superior stealth movement techniques, camouflage and concealment, tracking, counter-tracking, observation, and other fieldcraft skills. It also examines the occasions they participated in small-scale direct actions including ambushes and raids. Written by a Special Forces' Vietnam veteran, this book not only depicts the remarkable lives of these scouts when on campaign, but also details the training and conditioning that it took to become one of these shadow warriors.
