Excerpt from Chapters on the Science of Language The task I have undertaken is not one without difficulties, hut my subject is so full of interest, that I feel convinced it would be enticing, were it trusted in the hands of a still less skillful writer, for many will acknowledge with me, that few sciences, if any at all, can lay a more just claim to the attention of the thinking man than the Science of Language, since it treats of the greatest, most valuable and useful possession of mankind. My object, in composing the present work, has been to condense into a small compass the results of former discussions on several interesting philological problems, chiefly for the benefit of those who have not had, either the leisure or opportunity of devoting their time to philology, and also with a view to induce some, who may never have read anything on the subject - either because they think it dry, or because they know not what mysteries the science of language will unfold - to begin a study which promises so rich a harvest. Excerpt from Language and the Study of Language: Twelve Lectures on the Principles of Linguistic Science The main argument of the following work was first drawn out in tlie form of six lectures On the Principles of Linguistic Science delivered at tlie Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, during the month of March, 1864. Of these, a brief abstract was printed in the Annual Report of the Institution published in the same year. In the following winter (December, 1864, and January, 1865) they were again delivered as one of the regular courses before the Lowell Institute, in Boston, having been expanded into a series of twelve lectures. They are now laid before a wider public, essentially in their form as there presented. But they have been in the mean time carefully rewritten, and have suffered a not inconsiderable further expansion, as the removal of the enforced Procrustean limit, of sixty minutes to a lecture, has given opportunity to discuss with greater fulness important points in the general argument which had before come off with insufficient treatment. This book questions when exactly the Anthropocene began, uncovering an “early Anthropocene” in the literature, art, and science of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. In chapters organized around the classical elements of Earth, Fire, Water, and Air, Seth Reno shows how literary writers of the Industrial Era borrowed from scientists to capture the changes they witnessed to weather, climate, and other systems. Poets linked the hellish flames of industrial furnaces to the magnificent, geophysical force of volcanic explosions. Novelists and painters depicted cloud formations and polluted urban atmospheres as part of the emerging discipline of climate science. In so doing, the subjects of Reno’s study—some famous, some more obscure—gave form to a growing sense of humans as geophysical agents, capable of reshaping Earth itself.
