The principal results of this technical note are graphical presentations of the attenuation rates, phase velocities, and excitation factors for the dominant modes in the earth-ionosphere waveguide.The frequency range considered is 8 kc/s to 30 kc/s. *The model adopted for the ionosphere has an exponential variation for both the electron density and the collision frequency, and the effect of the earth's magnetic field is considered.Comparison with published experimental data confirms that the minimum attenuation of VLF radio waves in daytime is approximtely at 18 kc/s, while at night it is somewhat lower.The directional dependences of propagation predicted by the theory are also confirmed by experimental data.(Author).

Using a rather idealized ionospheric model, the conversion of VLF waveguide modes is considered for a discontinuity in the earth's surface properties. The method is based principally on modal analysis, although the connection with an earlier integral equation formulation is demonstrated. Extensive numerical results for the modal parameters and the conversion coefficients are given. Taken together, it is believed that the results may be employed for the quantitative interpretation of observed data and for the prediction of expected fields over rather complicated mixed land/sea paths at VLF.

The transfer characteristics (amplitude and phase as a function of frequency) of the sky wave propagated between the D-region and the E-region of the ionosphere and the earth have been evaluated at low and very low frequencies by the geometrical-optical theory employing the quasi-longitudinal approximation of the ionosphere reflection coefficients. Distances, d/j, up to 1000 statute miles are considered and multiple hops or time-modes (j = 1, 2, 3, ... ) are evaluated for a vertical electric dipole source. The effects of the electron density, collision frequency, intensity of the earth's magnetic field and the geometrical parameters are illustrated. The effect of the vertical lapse of the permittivity of the earth's atmosphere is introduced into the computation.
