Charles Brockden Brown and the Literary Magazine by Michael Cody Pdf

From 1803 to 1807, Charles Brockden Brown served as editor and chief contributor to the Literary Magazine, and American Register, a popular Philadelphia miscellany. His position allowed him to observe and comment upon life in the United States and transatlantic world during the nineteenth century's first decade. This book considers how Brown's Literary Magazine contributed to the development of cultural cohesiveness and political stability in the young United States. It explores the intellectual and cultural setting in which this Philadelphia miscellany was published, the political writing that appears in what Brown claimed was a politically neutral venue, and the social and cultural criticism that attempts to guide the development of the American character. During his twenty years as an author, he participated in disseminating texts of cultural and literary worth. Brown's essays and reviews assisted in the establishment of reading habits in America and influenced the public reception of the early American press.

Collected Writings of Charles Brockden Brown by Robert M. Battistini,Michael A. Cody,Karen A. Weyler Pdf

Charles Brockden Brown (1771–1810) was a key writer of the revolutionary era and early U.S. republic, known for his landmark novels and other writings in a variety of genres. The Collected Writings of Charles Brockden Brown presents all of Brown’s non-novelistic writings—letters, political pamphlets, fictions, periodical writings, historical writings, and poety—in a seven-volume scholarly set. This series’ volumes are edited to the highest scholarly standards and will bear the seal of the Modern Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions (MLA-CSE). The Literary Magazine and Other Writings, volume 3 of the series, presents a selection of Brown’s published writings between 1801 and 1807. The majority of the volume is devoted to texts that appeared in The Literary Magazine, and American Register, which Brown edited from October 1803 to December 1807, through fifty-one issues. The volume also includes a number of additional non-fiction pieces that Brown wrote during this period: a significant review essay in the 1801 American Review, and Literary Journal; a series of articles in the 1802 Port Folio; anda biographical sketch of Brown’s late brother-in-law, John Blair Linn, which was published with Linn’s book-length poem Valerian in 1805. The majority of these texts have not been in print since the early nineteenth century, and never have they been accorded this level of textual and editorial scrutiny.

Literary Essays and Reviews by Charles Brockden Brown Pdf

This edition is the third in a projected series of critical and annotated editions of the writings by Charles Brockden Brown (1771-1810) not contained in the Bicentennial Edition of his Novels and Related Works. It aims at widening the bibliographical and textual basis for the study of Brown's works. On the basis of an «Annotated Bibliography», which discusses in detail all former and many new attributions of his mostly anonymous contributions to periodicals, it offers for the first time a critical text of fifty-seven «Selected Literary Essays and Reviews». It shows that Brown, well known for his novels and short stories, also published a great number of articles on literary works and topics and became, about three decades before Poe, the first literary critic of note in the United States. Two indexes, of authors and key terms, help to explore a dimension of Brown's writings new to most students of American literature.

Poems, volume 7 of the series, is the first comprehensive collection of the poetry of Charles Brockden Brown (1771– 1810), one of the earliest professional writers in U.S. history. While Brown is well known as a novelist, his poetry has never before been collected, and many of the works included in this book appear in print for the first time in 200 years. The Committee on Scholarly Editions of the Modern Language Association has awarded the volume a seal of certification as an MLA Approved Scholarly Edition. Each edited text has a detailed textual note providing publication history, provenance, and information on attribution, along with extensive scholarly annotations. A historical introduction locates the poems in Brown’s biography, the print culture of the Revolutionary Atlantic world, and the literary history of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while a textual essay provides full bibliographical information on the sources for all copy-texts, as well as an extensive description of the editorial protocols. The volume therefore promises to reshape our understanding of professional literary writing in the period after the American Revolution.

The Romance of Real Life by Steven Watts Pdf

Originally published in 1994. The Romance of Real Life aims to reconstruct historically the life and writings of Charles Brockden Brown in terms of their cultural connection. Watts examines in detail Brown's early and later writings. By looking at these often-neglected works more closely, he offers a new perspective on the well-known novels from the late 1790s. Watts's synthetic look at genre as well as chronology reveals broader connections between Brown's literature and American society and culture in the decades of the early republic. Furthermore, Watts situates Brown's writings in terms of the interplay of text, context, and the self, with each factor recognized as mutually shaping the others. The Romance of Real Life incorporates sensitivity to the "social history of ideas," in which both the form and content of language remain rooted in the material experience of real life.
