Valley Thunder by Charles R. Knight Pdf

An “exciting and informative” account of the Civil War battle that opened the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, with illustrations included (Lone Star Book Review). Charles Knight’s Valley Thunder is the first full-length account in decades to examine the combat at New Market on May 15, 1864 that opened the pivotal Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who set in motion the wide-ranging operation to subjugate the South in 1864, intended to attack on multiple fronts so the Confederacy could no longer “take advantage of interior lines.” A key to success in the Eastern Theater was control of the Shenandoah Valley, an agriculturally abundant region that helped feed Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Grant tasked Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel, a German immigrant with a mixed fighting record, and a motley collection of units numbering some 10,000 men to clear the Valley and threaten Lee’s left flank. Opposing Sigel was Maj. Gen. (and former US Vice President) John C. Breckinridge, who assembled a scratch command to repulse the Federals. Included in his 4,500-man army were Virginia Military Institute cadets under the direction of Lt. Col. Scott Ship, who’d marched eighty miles in four days to fight Sigel. When the armies faced off at New Market, Breckinridge told the cadets, “Gentlemen, I trust I will not need your services today; but if I do, I know you will do your duty.” The sharp fighting seesawed back and forth during a drenching rainstorm, and wasn’t concluded until the cadets were inserted into the battle line to repulse a Federal attack and launch one of their own. The Union forces were driven from the Valley, but would return, reinforced and under new leadership, within a month. Before being repulsed, they would march over the field at New Market and capture Staunton, burn VMI in Lexington (partly in retaliation for the cadets’ participation at New Market), and very nearly capture Lynchburg. Operations in the Valley on a much larger scale that summer would permanently sweep the Confederates from the “Bread Basket of the Confederacy.” Valley Thunder is based on years of primary research and a firsthand appreciation of the battlefield terrain. Knight’s objective approach includes a detailed examination of the complex prelude leading up to the battle, and his entertaining prose introduces soldiers, civilians, and politicians who found themselves swept up in one of the war’s most gripping engagements.

The Red Knight by John Charles Corrigan Pdf

The Red Knight is the product of 25 years of meticulous research. It is, arguably, the most comprehensive account ever written about the Canadian Air Force’s legendary solo jet-aerobatics performer. An important part of Canadian aviation history, the Red Knight is third in longevity and total number of performances among RCAF display teams. In recognition of the program’s importance, Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame honoured the Red Knight with its Belt of Orion Award for Excellence in 2020 and the Royal Canadian Mint issued a commemorative coin in 2022. The Red Knight chronicles the history of the program, from its origins in 1957 to its cancellation in 1970. Everyone who has enjoyed watching the precision, grace and beauty of aerobatic flight will enjoy this insight into the “behind the scenes” aspect of aerial displays. A fine addition to any aviation reference library, The Red Knight will be of particular interest to anyone who remembers the program or saw a performance of this uniquely Canadian display. Printed in colour, The Red Knight - Second Edition is illustrated with many rare photographs never published before. The book is further enhanced by specially commissioned works of art from noted Canadian Aviation Artist, Don Connolly. Details of the various Red Knight paint schemes are provided through aircraft profiles, also specifically created for this publication. Together, this unique pictorial collection vividly portrays the legacy of the Red Knight. https://www.facebook.com/rcafredknight www.johncharlescorrigan.com "It's hard to imagine a more comprehensive look at the Red Knight program--and at aerobatics in general." — Kirkus Reviews

Fatalis by Jeff Rovin Pdf

The two luminescent eyes watched the long, deserted roadway from low on the gusty promontory. Moist and dark, like large oily pearls, the eyes shifted and widened almost imperceptibly at every movement a hundred feet below. They roamed among the dim lights and deep shadows, the tall waves of the sea beyond, the dark beach, the large sea animals that broke the surface in the distance, the night birds that soared and hovered above the rocks, the flat clouds, the misty raindrops, the signposts rattling in the wind. Most of these things were familiar; a few were not. But new or old, it was a world of constant movement, a world where any motion could be enemy or prey. Which was why the eyes missed nothing. Nor did the ears, which were shaped like gold tulip petals... It froze as the scent came suddenly, from the north...The black eyes were met by other black eyes and they all began to move...Quickly and silently they slid through the brush and stones...commanding the foothills simply by moving through them. The smell of the prey was different, the speed was greater than they had seen, but the size was familiar. They knew just what to do. --From Fatalis

All Yesterdays by John Conway,C. M. Kosemen,Darren Naish Pdf

All Yesterdays is a book about the way we see dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Lavishly illustrated with over sixty original artworks, All Yesterdays aims to challenge our notions of how prehistoric animals looked and behaved. As a criticalexploration of palaeontological art, All Yesterdays asks questions about what is probable, what is possible, and what iscommonly ignored.Written by palaeozoologist Darren Naish, and palaeontological artists John Conway and C.M. Kosemen, All Yesterdays isscientifically rigorous and artistically imaginative in its approach to fossils of the past - and those of the future.
