Chats on Old Clocks (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Hayden Pdf
Excerpt from Chats on Old Clocks A preface should be personal. An author who writes on such subjects as Old Furniture and Old China, with a view to educating public taste and attempting to show why certain objects should be regarded more lovingly than others, meets with a volume of correspondence from collectors. Threaded through such correspondence, extended over a long period, I find the constant demand for a volume dealing with old clocks in a popular manner. There is no house without its clock or clocks, and few collectors of old furniture have excluded clocks from their hobby. I have been therefore blamed that I did not include some more detailed treatment of clocks in my volumes on Old Furniture and Cottage and Farmhouse Furniture, my readers very justly advancing the argument that clocks form part of the study of domestic furniture as a whole. This may be admitted. But in the endeavour to satisfy such a want on the part of my clients, I plead that the subject of clockmaking is one to which years of study must be devoted. Chats on Old Pewter (Classic Reprint) by Henri Jean Louis Joseph Masse Pdf
Excerpt from Chats on Old Pewter MY first volume on Pewter Plate was published in 1904, just at the time that the first Exhibition of Pewter was held at Clifford's Inn Hall. As it was the first in the field in its own department, for Mr. Welch's History of the Pewterers' Company did not attempt to treat the subject from any other than the historical, and, in some cases, the social point of view, it has been of use to many dealers and many collectors, who have acknowledged their indebtedness, and to some others, who have thought such acknowledgment unnecessary. These latter might have allowed me the copyright in my own mistakes, particularly in some obvious printers' errors. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Edward Kellett Pdf
Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Chats on Old Prints: With 110 Illustrations and a Coloured Frontispiece It is a matter Open to question whether the younger units of the present generation, who have grown up in the environment of the pictorial magazine and journal and the thousand-and-one forms of illustration by modern process, quite realise the departure from the older methods of engraving. Finely wrought steel engraving is a lost art, and the wood engraver of middle-victorian days with his sandbag, his boxwood block, and his graver has gone to that most permanent of all furrows, the grave itself, which Time has cut enduringly. The only book on the legendary band that included Lester Young, Count Basie, and Ralph Ellison The Blue Devils have received very little attention from jazz historians, though the band members and the writer Ralph Ellison (who sometimes sat in with them) spoke with conviction about their sterling musicianship and their legendary ability to defeat all competitors in battles of the bands. In a literal sense, the band survived for ten years, from its founding in 1923 to its demise in 1933. In a figurative sense, the band continued for more than half a century because, as members Jimmy Rushing, Lester "Prez" Young, Oran "Hot Lips" Page, and Count Basie became jazz legends, their "apprenticeship" in the Blue Devils authenticated them as genuine jazzmen, real troupers ready to play for any and all occasions. Even as their fame grew, they always remained true to the group, believing, "Once a Blue Devil, always a Blue Devil." Chronicling the ten years the band was officially together, with a peek at what the Devils became after they disbanded, Douglas H. Daniels provides a corrective to most accounts of musical groups. He delves into the potent social and cultural history of the Depression to show its influence on the group"s founding as well as on the players" careers. This meticulously researched history of an iconic jazz band rescues them from undeserved obscurity and clears away the fog of neglect. Praise for Douglas H. Daniels"s Lester Leaps In: "A groundbreaking account of one of the great figures of twentieth-century music and the rich cultural heritage that made a Lester Young and this wonderful art possible." --Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams and Yo" Mama"sDisfunktional!
