Chemical Modification, Properties, and Usage of Lignin by Thomas Q. Hu Pdf

One of the most significant challenges facing mankind in the twenty-first century is the development of a sustainable global economy. Within the scientific community, this calls for the development of processes and technologies that will allow the sustainable production of materials from renewable natural resources. Plant material, in particular lignin, is one such resource. During the annual production of about 100 million metric tons of chemical wood pulps worldwide, approximately 45 and 2 million metric tons/year of kraft lignin and lignosulfonates, respectively, are also generated. Although lignosulfonates have found many applications outside the pulp and paper industry, the majority of kraft lignin is being used internally as a low-grade fuel for the kraft pulping operation. A surplus of kraft lignin will become available as kraft mills increase their pulp production without expanding the capacity of their recovery boilers that utilize lignin as a fuel. There is a tremendous opportunity and an enormous economic incentive to find better uses of kraft lignin, lignosulfonates and other industriallignins. The pulp and paper industry not only produces an enormous amount of lignins as by products of chemical wood pulps, but it also utilizes about 10 million metric tons of lignin per year as a component of mechanical wood pulps and papers. Mechanical wood pulps, produced in a yield of 90-98% with the retention of lignin, are mainly used to make low-quality, non-permanent papers such as newsprint and telephone directories because of the light-induced photooxidation of lignin and the yellowing of the papers.

Polymer Surface Modification: Relevance to Adhesion by Kash L. Mittal Pdf

This book documents the proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on this topic, held in Toronto. The book is divided into two parts: Part 1: Surface Modification Techniques; Part 2: Adhesion Improvement to Polymer Surfaces. Various ways to modify a host of polymer surfaces for a variety of purposes are covered in this book, with emphasis on latest developments. There is a tremendous current interest in devising new ways or ameliorating the existing techniques to modify polymer surfaces to attain desired characteristics because of its importance in a legion of technological areas, and all signals indicate that this interest will continue unabated. So this book should fill the need and should be a valuable addition to the literature.

Chemistry of Modern Papermaking by Cornel Hagiopol,James W. Johnston Pdf

Chemistry of Modern Papermaking presents a chemist's perspective on the papermaking process. With roughly 3% of the mass of a paper product invested in water-soluble chemicals, paper makers can adjust the speed and efficiency of the process, minimize and reuse surplus materials, and differentiate a paper product as required by specific customers. Surface Characteristics of Fibers and Textiles by M. J. Schick Pdf

The extraordinary growth in the production and use of man-made fibers over the past fewdecades has focused attention on the surface properties of fibers and textiles. This volumecombines surface science and technology in its presentation of the substantial progressthat has been made in the technology related to the surface characteristics of natural, synthetic, and glass fibers and textiles.Adopting an interdisciplinary approach , the coverage places emphasis upon the wetting, soiling, staining, frictional, and adhesive properties of fibers and fabrics, as well asphenomena related to these properties. The book offers critical reviews which describeexperimental facts, theories, and processes. Symbols are clearly defined in each chapter.Among the subjects covered are the surface properties of glass fibers, soil release, stainand water repellance, friction of fabrics, bonding of nonwovens, and the wetting of fibers.Surface Characteristics of Fibers and Textiles, Part II is an outstanding textbook forcourses dealing with surface chemistry, the mechanical properties of textiles, textiletechnology, and polymer chemistry . It is also a valuable reference book designed to makecurrent knowledge on these subjects accessible to industrial and academic researchers.

Paper and Composites from Agro-Based Resources by Roger M. Rowell,Judith Rowell Pdf

Sustainable development is an important concept underlying many of today's renewable resource policies. Agro-based resources, such as wood, make up a significant portion of modern renewable resources. While probably the most familiar example, wood is only one type of agromass in the vast world of photosynthetic resources. Paper and Composites from Agro-Based Resources explores the great number of options available for producing paper and composites. Using sound ecosystem management principles, the book discusses strategies for obtaining fiber from plant-based resources including agricultural crops and residues, grasses, and recycled agro-based resources, in addition to wood.

Macromolecules by H.G. Elias Pdf

The second edition of this textbook is identical with its fourth German edi tion and it thus has the same goals: precise definition of basic phenomena, a broad survey of the whole field, integrated representation of chemistry, physics, and technology, and a balanced treatment of facts and comprehen sion. The book thus intends to bridge the gap between the often oversimpli fied introductory textbooks and the highly specialized texts and monographs that cover only parts of macromolecular science. The text intends to survey the whole field of macromolecular science. Its organization results from the following considerations. The chemical structure of macromolecular compounds should be inde pendent of the method of synthesis, at least in the ideal case. Part I is thus concerned with the chemical and physical structure of polymers. Properties depend on structure. Solution properties are thus discussed in Part II, solid state properties in Part III. There are other reasons for dis cussing properties before synthesis: For example, it is difficult to understand equilibrium polymerization without knowledge of solution thermodynamics, the gel effect without knowledge of the glass transition temperature, etc. Part IV treats the principles of macromolecular syntheses and reactions.
