Chemistry of Hydrocarbon Combustion by David. Hucknall Pdf

The scientific and economic importance of the high-temperature reactions of hydrocarbons in both the presence and absence of oxygen cannot be overemphasized. A vast chemical industry exists based on feedstocks produced by the controlled pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, while uncontrolled combustion in air is still among the most important sources of heat and mechanical energy. The detonation and explosion of hydrocarbon-oxidant mixtures can however, be a highly dangerous phenomenon which destroys lives and equipment. In order that control can be exerted over combustion processes, a complete description of hydrocarbon oxidation and pyrolysis is required. A major contribution to this is an understanding of the unstable intermediates involved and their reactions. The aim of this book is to review our knowledge of the chemistry of hydrocarbon combustion and to consider the data which are available for relevant reactions. Chapter 1 describes early studies in which the apparent complexity of the chemistry was established and the type of information required for a better understanding was defined. Experimental studies of the overall process which were carried out with the aim of establishing the sequence of stable chemical intermediates and some of the unstable species are described in Chapter 2. The limited nature of the information thus obtained showed that independent studies of individual reactions involving the unstable species were required. In Chapter 3 investigations specifically aimed at the determination of the kinetics of elementary reactions are discussed.

Biochemical Physics by Sergeĭ Dmitrievich Varfolomeev Pdf

This book presents recent research in Chemical and Biochemical physics. Chemical physics addresses a large range of problems. An effective chemical physicist is a jack-of-all-trades, able to apply the principles and techniques of the field to everything from high-tech materials to biology. Just as the fields of chemistry and physics have expanded, so have chemical physics subject areas, which include polymers, materials, surfaces/interfaces, and biological macromolecules, along with the traditional small molecule and condensed phase systems. Biochemical Physics is a science that joins the three natural sciences biology, chemistry and physics into one comprehensive study. N.M. Emanuel pioneered this science over fifty years ago. This book presents papers, written by Emanuel's students, that reveal recent developments in this interesting field.

The Mechanisms of Pyrolysis, Oxidation, and Burning of Organic Materials (Classic Reprint) by Leo A. Wall Pdf

Excerpt from The Mechanisms of Pyrolysis, Oxidation, and Burning of Organic Materials Key words: Alchemy; free radicals; genesis; phlogiston; valency. Among the sciences chemistry made a late start. Even at the end of the 1700's when its sister sciences - mathematics, physics and biology - had attained a modest degree of maturity, chemical transformations were explained on the basis of the mythical phlogiston. How could this have occurred? Except for medicine, chemistry is the most applicable of all the sciences and from this standpoint it might be supposed that its development would come about sooner than that of the other sciences. Doubtless in prehistoric days many chemical discoveries were made independently in different parts of the world and kept as closely guarded family secrets. Thus, the reduction of ores in fires, the formation of glass by fusion of pot-ashes with sand and the production of crude soap by hydrolysis of fats by hot aqueous potash solutions are all examples of discoveries that may well have been made before the dawn of history. Although chemical history does not commence with Greek science, the Greeks really determined the early history of chemistry and unwittingly set it off in a'wrong direction. We can detect three main lines of chemical thought among Greek philosophers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Reactions and Mechanisms in Thermal Analysis of Advanced Materials by Atul Tiwari,Baldev Raj Pdf

Strong bonds form stronger materials. For this reason, the investigation on thermal degradation of materials is a significantly important area in research and development activities. The analysis of thermal stability can be used to assess the behavior of materials in the aggressive environmental conditions, which in turn provides valuable information about the service life span of the materiel. Unlike other books published so far that have focused on either the fundamentals of thermal analysis or the degradation pattern of the materials, this book is specifically on the mechanism of degradation of materials. The mechanism of rapturing of chemical bonds as a result of exposure to high-temperature environment is difficult to study and resulting mechanistic pathway hard to establish. Limited information is available on this subject in the published literatures and difficult to excavate. Chapters in this book are contributed by the experts working on thermal degradation and analysis of the wide variety of advanced and traditional materials. Each chapter discusses the material, its possible application, behavior of chemical entities when exposed to high-temperature environment and mode and the mechanistic route of its decomposition. Such information is crucial while selecting the chemical ingredients during the synthesis or development of new materials technology.

Polymers, Polymer Blends, Polymer Composites and Filled Polymers by Abdulakh K. Mikitaev,Mukhamed Kh Ligidov,Gennadiĭ Efremovich Zaikov Pdf

Polymers are substances containing a large number of structural units joined by the same type of linkage. These substances often form into a chain-like structure. Starch, cellulose, and rubber all possess polymeric properties. Today, the polymer industry has grown to be larger than the aluminium, copper and steel industries combined. Polymers already have a range of applications that far exceeds that of any other class of material available to man. Current applications extend from adhesives, coatings, foams, and packaging materials to textile and industrial fibres, elastomers, and structural plastics. Polymers are also used for most composites, electronic devices, biomedical devices, optical devices, and precursors for many newly developed high-tech ceramics. This book presents leading-edge research in this rapidly-changing and evolving field.
