Excerpt from Cheshire, Its Traditions and History, Including a Record of the Rise and Progress of Freemasonry in This Ancient Province This work is intended to embrace a popular and concise summary of the History of the County Palatine of Chester from the earliest ages to the present time. It is not a mere stringing together of other men's views and opinions: it is the outcome of patient research among State Papers, documents, newspapers, and books, as also the result of inside observation of county affairs garnered during long experience of an active journalistic and literary career. A perusal of the chapter headings will show the scope of the work - as also its multifarious features, many of which have never hitherto been published - far more than any dry display of facts and figures. The Author recalls with deep feelings of pleasure the reception given to the "History of Altrincham and Bowdon" in 1879, amplified to include Sale and the surrounding townships in a second work some twenty years ago. Both editions are now out of print. They have since brought a premium on published prices and are looked upon as heirlooms in local families. Special stress may be laid on chapters relating to Parliamentary and Local Government, including description of the first election and meeting of the Cheshire County Council. They are the most complete ever published. The life and times of Henry, Lord Delamere, first Earl of Warrington, the Cheshire patriot par excellence, are set forth at length, including the famous trial for High Treason before Judge Jeffreys.
