100 Cases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Second Edition by Cecilia Bottomley,Janice Rymer Pdf

A 35-year-old woman arrives on the labour ward complaining of abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding at 36 weeks 2 days' gestation. The pain started 2 hours earlier while she was in a cafe and is not relieved by lying still or walking around. The bleeding is bright red. You are the medic on duty... 100 Cases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology presents 100 obstetric- or gynaecology-related scenarios commonly seen by medical students and junior doctors in the emergency department, outpatient clinic, or on the ward. A succinct summary of the patient's history, examination, and initial investigations—including photographs where relevant—is followed by questions on the diagnosis and management of each case. The answer includes a detailed discussion on each topic, with further illustration where appropriate, providing an essential revision aid as well as a practical guide for students and junior doctors. Making speedy and appropriate clinical decisions, and choosing the best course of action to take as a result, is one of the most important and challenging parts of training to become a doctor. These true-to-life cases will teach students and junior doctors to recognize important obstetric and gynaecological conditions, and to develop their diagnostic and management skills.

Brain and Spinal Tumors of Childhood by David A. Walker,Giorgio Perilongo,Roger E. Taylor,Ian F. Pollack Pdf

This second edition comes at a time of a paradigm shift in understanding of the molecular pathology and neuroscience of brain and spinal tumors of childhood and their mechanisms of growth within the developing brain. Excellent collaborative translational networks of researchers are starting to drive change in clinical practise through the need to test many ideas in trials and scientific initiatives. This text reflects the growing concern to understand the impact of the tumour and its treatment upon the full functioning of the child’s developing brain and to integrate the judgments of the risks of acquiring brain damage with the risk of death and the consequences for the quality of life for those who survive. Information on the principles of treatment has been thoroughly updated. A chapter also records the extraordinary work done by advocates. All medical and allied professionals involved in any aspect of the clinical care of these patients will find this book an invaluable resource.

Childhood Cancer and Functional Impacts Across the Care Continuum by National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Health Care Services,Committee on Childhood Cancers and Disability Pdf

Since the late 1960s, the survival rate in children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer has steadily improved, with a corresponding decline in the cancer-specific death rate. Although the improvements in survival are encouraging, they have come at the cost of acute, chronic, and late adverse effects precipitated by the toxicities associated with the individual or combined use of different types of treatment (e.g., surgery, radiation, chemotherapy). In some cases, the impairments resulting from cancer and its treatment are severe enough to qualify a child for U.S. Social Security Administration disability benefits. At the request of Social Security Administration, Childhood Cancer and Functional Impacts Across the Care Continuum provides current information and findings and conclusions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of selected childhood cancers, including different types of malignant solid tumors, and the effect of those cancers on childrenâ (TM)s health and functional capacity, including the relative levels of functional limitation typically associated with the cancers and their treatment. This report also provides a summary of selected treatments currently being studied in clinical trials and identifies any limitations on the availability of these treatments, such as whether treatments are available only in certain geographic areas.

Brain and Spinal Tumors of Childhood by David Walker,Giorgio Perilongo,J Punt,Roger Taylor Pdf

Children with brain and spinal tumors account for 20-25% of childhood cancers. Until the early 1990s there had been little progress in the development of new treatments, and outcomes were not improving despite advances seen in other childhood cancers. During the past 10 years, however, there has been a dramatic increase in interest in the subject a

Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery by L. Symon,J. Brihaye,B. Guidetti,F. Loew,J. D. Miller,H. Nornes,E. Pásztor,B. Pertuiset,M. G. Ya?argil Pdf

As an addition to the European postgraduate training system for young neurosurgeons we began to publish in 1974 this series devoted to Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery which was later sponsored by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. The fact that the English language is well on the way to becoming the international medium at European scientific conferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contributions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publication of any volume. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientific papers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. The contributions are written by specialists in the given fields and constitute the first part of each volume. In the second part of each volume, we publish detailed descriptions of standard operative procedures, furnished by experienced clinicians; in these articles the authors describe the techniques they employ and explain the advantages, difficulties and risks involved in the various procedures. This part is intended primarily to assist young neurosurgeons in their post graduate training. However, we are convinced that it will also be useful to experienced, fully trained neurosurgeons.

Central Nervous System Cancer Rehabilitation by Adrian Cristian Pdf

Rehabilitation of a person with cancer of the brain and spinal cord requires individualized care by a team of specialists from time of initial diagnosis through active treatment, survivorship, and advanced stages of the disease. The purpose of this book is to provide useful information to assist these clinicians in the noble endeavor of rehabilitating individuals diagnosed and treated for cancer of the central nervous system with the goal of maximizing the level of function and quality of life. This book begins with a description of the cancer rehabilitation continuum of care, safety considerations, and functional outcomes. The section on brain cancer provides content on neurosurgical management, rehabilitation, cognitive deficits, communication, and swallowing impairments. The section on spinal cord cancer provides the reader with information on characteristics of spinal cord tumors, neurosurgical management, and rehabilitation. A chapter on rehabilitation of the child with brain and spinal cord cancer addresses the unique needs of this population. Pain and fatigue are very common concerns raised by persons with cancer of the central nervous system, and these topics are covered as well. The final chapter covers the equally important topic of the role of palliative rehabilitation in advanced cancer--page ix.

Intramedullary Spinal Cord Tumors by Georges Fischer,Jacques Brotchi Pdf

Here is the first book in 30 years to cover all diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMTs), a relatively rare but often misdiagnosed type of tumor. You will benefit from the largest personal collection of operated cases (171) ever assembled, as well as a review of 1,100 additional cases, making this the single most comprehensive book on IMTs available today. You will also appreciate the vital role of MRI in accurately diagnosing these tumors and review the latest technical refinements in surgical methods. Divided into three parts, the book begins with the diagnostic and therapeutic problems common to all intramedullary spinal cord tumors, then covers the histology of individual tumors, and finally examines the controversial value of radiotherapy in the treatment of both benign and malignant tumors in children and adults. Throughout, full-color illustrations depict anatomy from a surgical point of view.

“The editors...have done an outstanding job of presenting...complex information in a lucid manner – this book is a must-read for the global community of aspiring students and neuro-oncology practitioners.” Amar Gajjar, MD in the Foreword This is a succinct introduction to pediatric neuro-oncology. It summarizes the key advances in molecular biology that have helped transform this rapidly evolving field and provides up-to-date coverage of major and emerging treatment modalities as well as supportive care. Separate chapters present each kind of pediatric brain cancer and its diagnosis and treatment. As more children survive brain cancer, the importance of quality of life issues and helping survivors to cope with the neuropsychological impact and long-term effects of current therapies has come into sharper focus; these topics are also addressed in the book, as are palliative care and pediatric neuro-oncology in countries with limited resources. The book is aimed at trainees and practitioners who seek an up-to-date text in pediatric neuro-oncology that is both comprehensive and concise.
