Children and Young People Living with HIV/AIDS by Pranee Liamputtong Pdf

This book focuses on the issues encountered by children and young people who are living with HIV/AIDS. It examines their lived experiences associated with HIV/AIDS, and studies groups of children and youngsters from around the globe. Connecting empirical information with real-life situations, the book brings together results from empirical research that relates to these children and young people. Its chapters can be used as evidence for health care providers to implement socially and culturally appropriate services to assist individuals and groups of children and young people who are living with HIV/AIDS in many societies. Many of these young people are from the most marginalized and vulnerable groups; and many have been orphaned by the death of their HIV-positive parents. Marginalized young people such as refugees, migrants and street children are most at risk due to the use of illicit drugs, their exposure to unprotected sex (in exchange for food, money and protection), and stigma associated with their marginalized lives. The impact that HIV/AIDS has on the opportunities for these young people to be able to lead healthy adult lives is considerable. This book gives a voice to these children and young people and advances our understanding of their lived experiences and needs.

Children caring for parents with HIV and AIDS by Evans, Ruth,Becker, Saul Pdf

This ground-breaking book focuses on the experiences and perspectives of children and young people who care for a parent with HIV in the global North and South. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research from the UK and Tanzania, the book presents a unique insight into the similarities and differences in children's and parents' experiences across diverse socio-economic, cultural and welfare contexts. The book makes a significant contribution to the growing research evidence on children and young people with caring responsibilities ('young carers') and the impacts of HIV and AIDS on families globally. It examines caring relationships within families affected by HIV and AIDS; the outcomes of caregiving; children's and families' resilience; the factors influencing whether children become involved in care work; and local and global policy responses. It also provides insight into the perspectives of parents living with HIV and service providers working with families. This book will be of interest to policy makers and practitioners in the field of HIV and AIDS, and to researchers, academics and students concerned with international development, social policy, human geography, childhood and youth studies, social work, health and social care, education, children's services and nursing and palliative care.

Protecting Childhood in the AIDS Pandemic by Jody Heymann,Lorraine Sherr,Rachel Kidman Pdf

Every year over a quarter of a million children die of AIDS. Another two million children currently live with HIV, most in sub-Saharan Africa. Millions more are affected when AIDS enters their families or their communities. Orphans are perhaps the most visible: 15 million children have lost one or both parents to AIDS; 12 million of them live in sub-Saharan Africa. The increasing burden of HIV/AIDS falls heavily on extended families who support HIV-infected family members, care for relatives who are sick and dying, and for children who are left behind. Adults who take on these caregiving burdens have less time for their own children, fewer financial resources, and often face greater difficulties meeting even basic needs. In communities severely affected by AIDS, traditional safety nets are often eroded by cumulative mortality: teachers are absent from school because of their own illness or that of family members, and basic health facilities can be overwhelmed by AIDS care needs, all of which leave children increasingly vulnerable. The impact is most severe in environments where government- and state-level support is weakest-where universal education, health care, and social welfare are either partially available or not available at all. Protecting Childhood in the AIDS Pandemic will bring together lessons from global experts on what has worked and what would need to be done to transform the outcomes of children of all ages whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. Examining which public policies and programs have worked best to meet the full range of children's needs, from medical care to social support and from infancy to adolescence, this is the volume for academics, social scientists, policymakers, and on-the-ground practitioners around the world.

A Call to Action by Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.,UNICEF. Pdf

AIDS is threatening children as never before. Millions of them are missing their childhood, medicines, education, information and a host of other essentials due to the disease. Yet they are often overlooked in AIDS programmes, policies and budgets. The Unite for Children. Unite against AIDS Campaign, a global effort by UNICEF, UNAIDS and a multiplicity of other partners, aims to accelerate action to help those at risk of HIV infection, and those already infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Through four focus areas - prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, providing paediatric treatment, preventing infection among adolescents and young people, and protecting and supporting children affected by AIDS, the Campaign aims to ensure that this is the last generation of children that bears the burden of AIDS.

Children and HIV/AIDS by Gary Anderson,Constance Ryan,Susan Taylor-Brown,Myra White-Gray Pdf

In December 1982, the Centers for Disease Control received the first reports of cases of children with HIV/AIDS. Since that time, the child welfare system, as well as other human service organizations, have been coping with and responding to the crises of children and families living with HIV/AIDS, including the considerable number of children affected by AIDS through the illness of their parents, siblings, or other family members. This volume is intended as a resource for personnel within the child welfare field serving children and families whose lives are touched by HIV and AIDS. The contributors add insight to and fuel the discussion of the fight against AIDS. They provide tools to help better serve the children and adolescents that the current epidemic so tragically affects. Chapters and contributors include: "Factors Associated with Parents' Decision to Disclose Their HIV Diagnosis to Their Children" by Lori S. Wiener, Haven B. Battles, and Nancy E. Heilman; "Custody Planning with HIV-Affected Families" by Sally Mason; "Correlates and Distribution of HIV Risk Behaviors Among Homeless Youths in New York City" by Michael C. Clatts, W. Rees Davis, J. L. Sotheran, and Aylin Attillasoy; and "HIV Prevention for Youths in Independent Living Programs" by Wendy F. Auslander, Vered Slonim-Nevo, Diane Elze, and Michael Sherraden. Originally published as a special issue of 'Child Welfare', this volume examines lessons learned from a variety of perspectives and settings, and identifies a number of continuing challenges facing the field. 'Children and HIV/AIDS' is an invaluable compendium that should be read by social workers and health specialists and all those affected by the epidemic.

Teenagers, HIV, and AIDS by Maureen E. Lyon,Lawrence D'Angelo Pdf

Who will want me now? It's a heart-wrenching question for teenagers infected with HIV. The number of HIV/AIDS-infected teenagers in the United States is increasing. Nearly 35,000 U.S. teenagers now have AIDS. Far more have been diagnosed with HIV, and an undetermined number have the virus and do not yet know. Each year, some 1,700 young people aged 13 to 24 are diagnosed with the ravaging end result of this infection: AIDS. In this volume, experts who work with HIV/AIDS-infected teenagers examine the psychological and social fallout compounding the frightening medical issues faced by adolescents who've received the diagnosis. Readers share the challenge with teens as they face the stigma of HIV/AIDS and the tough decisions about who to tell of their infection and when to do it. We learn the hard truth about health care, self care, and new treatment options for affected teens. And we read about the heartbreaking end-of-life care issues for dying adolescents. Perhaps most important, the authors offer resources teens and their families can turn to for information and support. And they explain what family, friends, teachers, and other professionals can do to help infected teens maximize their mental health and their quality of life.

Children and AIDS by UNICEF.,World Health Organization Pdf

This report assesses some of the most important actions and changes for children affected by AIDS that occurred in the first year of the global campaign 'Unite for Children. Unite against AIDS'. Produced by UNICEF, UNAIDS and WHO, the report notes promising developments, such as increasing numbers of children receiving treatment, declining HIV prevalence among young people resulting from behavioural change, and the integration of children and AIDS into national policy frameworks. However, it also highlights the huge gaps in progress that remain and seeks to explore how the campaign must move forward in 2007 in order to achieve its ambitious goals.
