Through the Mind's Eye: A Journey of Self-Discovery by J.P. Willson Pdf

Depression, self-loathing, unemployment, and destroyed relationships: the effects of drug and alcohol addiction run so much deeper than the morning-after hangover. However, awareness alone will not save the struggling addict, as J.P. Willson reveals in his fearless examination of substance dependency; recovery means doing the mental and emotional work to look inside oneself and discover a way to live as a sober, fulfilled individual in an often challenging world. Through the Mind’s Eye: A Journey of Self-Discovery is a thought-provoking and honest examination of the emotional, psychological, and physical ways someone must enact their own healing. As a recovering alcoholic, Willson courageously shares his own story of addiction, as well the ups and downs he experienced along the road to recovery. Packed with astonishing insights about our culture’s relationship to alcohol, as well as the lies we tell ourselves in order to keep using, this book will change the way you view addiction. Willson has no qualms about telling the reader how difficult recovery is—and how there is no quick cure-all—but his compassionate, candid reflections help foster the knowledge and will to change.

Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An unflinching examination of how our drinking culture hurts women and a gorgeous memoir of how one woman healed herself.”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Untamed “You don’t know how much you need this book, or maybe you do. Either way, it will save your life.”—Melissa Hartwig Urban, Whole30 co-founder and CEO The founder of the first female-focused recovery program offers a groundbreaking look at alcohol and a radical new path to sobriety. We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but. When Holly Whitaker decided to seek help after one too many benders, she embarked on a journey that led not only to her own sobriety, but revealed the insidious role alcohol plays in our society and in the lives of women in particular. What’s more, she could not ignore the ways that alcohol companies were targeting women, just as the tobacco industry had successfully done generations before. Fueled by her own emerging feminism, she also realized that the predominant systems of recovery are archaic, patriarchal, and ineffective for the unique needs of women and other historically oppressed people—who don’t need to lose their egos and surrender to a male concept of God, as the tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous state, but who need to cultivate a deeper understanding of their own identities and take control of their lives. When Holly found an alternate way out of her own addiction, she felt a calling to create a sober community with resources for anyone questioning their relationship with drinking, so that they might find their way as well. Her resultant feminine-centric recovery program focuses on getting at the root causes that lead people to overindulge and provides the tools necessary to break the cycle of addiction, showing us what is possible when we remove alcohol and destroy our belief system around it. Written in a relatable voice that is honest and witty, Quit Like a Woman is at once a groundbreaking look at drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol in order to live our best lives without the crutch of intoxication. You will never look at drinking the same way again.

Long Walk Out of the Woods by Adam B. Hill Pdf

A physician shares the darkest depths of his depression, suicidal ideation, addiction, and the important lessons he learned through years of personal recovery. Pediatric oncologist and palliative care physician Dr. Adam B. Hill suffered despair and disillusionment with the culture of medicine, culminating in a spiral of depression, alcoholism, and an active suicidal plan. Then while in recovery from active addiction, he lost a colleague to suicide, further revealing the extent of the secrecy and broken systems contributing to an epidemic of professional distress within the medical field. By sharing his harrowing story, Dr. Hill helps identify the barriers and obstacles standing in the way of mental health recovery, while pleading for a revolutionary new approach to how we treat individuals in substance use recovery. In fighting stereotypes/stigma and teaching vulnerability, compassion, and empathy, Hill’s work is being lauded as a road map for better practices at a time when medical professionals around the world are struggling in silence.

Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences,Committee on the Science of Changing Behavioral Health Social Norms Pdf

Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It offers a set of conclusions and recommendations about successful stigma change strategies and the research needed to inform and evaluate these efforts in the United States.

HomoAmerican - the Secret Society by Anonim Pdf

HomoAmerican - The Secret Society is not merely the story of a gay man growing up in America, but a firsthand portrait of those turbulent and confusing times, observed through unfiltered eyes. Over the years and in my extensive travels, I have strived toward many means of expression and sometimes avenues of escape. I confronted the confines of society and pursued the promise and myths of liberation. As a result of my conspicuous rebellion, that of simply being myself, of not living in disguise, I began to discover another society -- a Secret Society -- of people who have grown up in this world, where lies of omission shape our destiny and keep us apart.Free of the confines of convention we wander along dangerous paths in search our own. In ordinary circles my personal life was a minefield. I have lived as an openly gay man in Iran, was witness to the lavish extravagances and social horror of apartheid South Africa, was arrested on suspicion of murder in Paris and for prostitution in New York. While my stories recount the path that brought me here, mostly they tell the story of the man that I was becoming, pieced together, bit-by-bit, out of shadows, reinvented and reborn, in silence.Still, a recurring theme plays itself out in each episode of my life; the cost of acceptance is always denial, so I am at odds with the world, or so it seems and as I grow older I realize that in ghettos and in stereotypes there is an underlying thread of a war, not with society, but with ourselves. My stories are images of different selves developing in that dangerous void and a message to all people who live in disguise and have no reflection, to people who grow up in isolation and create their lives out of their own imagination. This edition is black cloth covered and gold embossed on the spine with a rich full color sturdy dust jacket.

Cronies by Ken Babbs Pdf

It all began at a cocktail party for the Stanford writing class of 1958. Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs became cronies and embarked on a rollicking, rambunctious adventure that lasted almost half a century. This burlesque is their tale. They are the Merry Band of Pranksters. From their early days in La Honda, to their cross-country trip with Neal Cassady at the wheel of the psychedelic-painted bus Further, and back for the Acid Tests on the West Coast with the house band later to be known as the Grateful Dead, this is their real story. The large cast of characters, in addition to the Pranksters, Cassady, and the Dead, include the Hell's Angels, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsburg, Larry McMurtry, Wendell Berry, and a pickup-length sturgeon. We're along for the ride on the famous bus trip to Manhattan and the subsequent visit with Leary at Millbrook. Whether it's a Hell's Angels party at Kesey's house, the Berkeley Vietnam anti-war rally, Kesey's pot bust, the six months on the lam in Mexico, or further adventures with Garcia and the Dead, Cronies is a bullet train of a book, fast-paced and rich with action. With the ultimate move to Oregon and many of the Pranksters following close behind, Babbs and Kesey enjoyed a magical friendship and collaborations until Kesey passed away in 2001. Irreverent, unencumbered by social norms, yet literary and poetic, this is a view of the sixties and beyond from someone who was there and remembers it. Kind of...
