Christian Life in the Community (Classic Reprint) by Alexander John William Myers Pdf

Excerpt from Christian Life in the Community Leadership, the management of and participation in great movements, and the kind of service that touches roots and causes, appeal to men and women today. It is significant that no one can make a study of the Church, such as is here presented, without being impressed over and over again that such work, more than anything else, characterizes the essential nature of the Church's life at the present time. This course seeks to enlist men and women in that noble fellowship of service. The call is urgent. Those with the spirit of the Crusaders will not fail to respond. Under the "Suggestions for Study, Investigation, and Practice Work" a Scripture reference is always placed first. These passages are not cited as proof texts. But our inspiration to service comes largely through the Bible, and the suitability of these passages as a background for our thinking will, it is hoped, be apparent. Suggestions to students throughout the course ought to be followed conscientiously. Not one of them has been made except under the conviction that it would be of real help. The aim is to arouse personal interest and induce independent thought and investigation. The study will have failed of its purpose if the students do not get into closer personal touch with the local conditions affecting human welfare and develop a more sympathetic understanding of others. The Secret of Progress (Classic Reprint) by W. Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. A Century of Moravian Sisters by Elizabeth Lehman Myers Pdf

Excerpt from A Century of Moravian Sisters: A Record of Christian Community Life The women who have lived in them have come from Europe, the West Indies, South America, and all parts of North America. Cultured women of high degree; women of lesser degree but just as sweet and gentle, and women of the working class, strong and willing but with the same desire for spiritual uplift, - all these have dignified the old houses with the graciousness of their living. Church Cooperation in Community Life (Classic Reprint) by Paul Leroy Vogt Pdf

Excerpt from Church Cooperation in Community Life When one begins to discuss a subject it helps very much if his readers know what he has in mind in the terms used. In the title selected for this text there are at least three words that need definition. Probably no reader will agree fully with any of the defi nitions given, but an attempt to define should at least help the reader to understand better in what sense the terms are used by the writer. On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire (Classic Reprint) by George Forrest Browne Pdf

Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Evolution and the Need of Atonement (Classic Reprint) by Stewart Andrew McDowall Pdf

Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. From Isolation to Community by Myles Werntz Pdf

It is no secret that isolation is one of the key ailments of our age. But less explored is the way the church as it is frequently practiced contributes to this isolation instead of offering an alternative. With the help of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, this book argues for a renewed vision of the church community as a theological therapy to cultural, moral, and sociological isolation. It offers an account of how familiar church practices, such as Scripture reading, worship, prayer, and eating, contribute to community formation in the body of Christ.

Wholly for God by William Law,Andrew Murray Pdf

2012 Reprint of Original 1894 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Many have come to discover the writings of William Law through the publication of selections of his work edited by Andrew Murray. "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" (1728) deeply influenced the chief actors in the great Evangelical revival. John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Henry Venn, Thomas Scott, and Thomas Adam all express their deep obligation to the author. "The Serious Call" also affected others deeply. Samuel Johnson, ] Gibbon, Lord Lyttelton and Bishop Home all spoke enthusiastically of its merits; and it is still the only work by which its author is popularly known. It has high merits of style, being lucid and pointed to a degree. Though not the most popular, perhaps the most interesting, original and suggestive of all Law's works are those he wrote in his later years, after he had become an enthusiastic admirer of Jacob Boehme, the Teutonic theosopher. From his earliest years, he had been deeply impressed with the piety, beauty and thoughtfulness of the writings of the Christian mystics. However, it was not till after his accidental meeting with the works of Boehme, about 1734, that pronounced mysticism appeared in his works.
