Christmas in the Hood by Nikki Turner Pdf

The undisputed queen of hip-hop fiction, #1 Essence bestselling author Nikki Turner unwraps a talented new collection of writers with raw urban stories to jingle your bells this season. Christmas in the Hood presents fresh talent alongside shining stars such as K. Elliott and Seth “Soul Man” Ferranti–all writing gritty tales that reveal what the holidays bring for the naughty and the nice who live by the code of the street. In “Secret Santa,” after her children’s Christmas presents are stolen, a woman has to decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to give them the holiday they deserve; in “Me and Grandma,” a senior sleighs more crack than candy canes to bring Christmas cheer to her needy grandkids; and in “Holiday Hell,” Noelle must raise $23,000 to repay a loan shark or her sister will become a ghost of Christmas past. True to the streets and true to the season, these stories will raise the holiday spirit in the heart of even the most ghetto-hardened gangsta. BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Nikki Turner's Heartbreak of a Hustler's Wife. “The ghetto’s voice without constraint.”—Upscale, on Tales from da Hood

Christmas in Da Hood by Martha Solomon Pdf

As a child, every year in New York at Christmastime, we'd watch "Twas the Night Before Christmas" on the television. My mother had a gift; she had the ability to take a single word and write whole stories and poems. One day I realized I had the same gift as my mother. I took the thoughts from my mind, put them on paper, and lo and behold, I wrote a children's book--not a story that falls too far from the tree of the original--one that deviates just enough to make you wonder what could happen if a mouse was found in the house at Christmas. Because I am from the city, I've lived among all kinds of pests, including mice. I imagined how whimsical it would be if a mouse showed up at Christmas. I also recalled one Christmas, as my mom and the 5 of us children were cleaning our 4 floor house in the city, the dogs got a hold of the turkey that was supposed to be our dinner that night. They pulled it to the floor and ate it all up. It was out of that memory that I chose to implement that storyline in the book and decided to add humor. After years of meditation, I finally wrote it out and thus, "Christmas in Da Hood" was born. This is a humorous children's story of how a family had to cope with a mouse and the excitement he brought to this household. I truly hope you enjoy this clever twist on the classic story.

Do They Know It's Christmas Yet? by James Crookes Pdf

Switch off the 21st century and take a step back to the 1980s. "Do They Know It's Christmas, Yet?" is a hilarious journey through love, loss, second chances and joyful hope. During a global pandemic, you'd be forgiven for thinking life couldn't become more complicated. Unless you are Tash and Jamie Summers. On Christmas Day 2020, an unfathomable - and entirely accidental - return to October 1984 causes significant collateral damage for these squabbling siblings, and they have conflicting obligations. Hers is to return to her baby son in 2020, his is to get 1984 back on track, because as it stands Bob Geldof won't form Band Aid or release the famine beating song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Which is kind of a big deal, because the song led to USA For Africa, and Live Aid, the most famous live music event of all time. And it's all their fault. It's a tricky one: try to return home to your baby, or feed a million others? "...such a bloody brilliant story!" "The brilliance of the dialogue shines through" "Deserves to be made for TV!" James Crookes has been writing comedy for TV and Radio for twenty years. He has contributed to shows on BBC One, CBBC and CBeebies, along with producing and co-presenting the Bauer Radio breakfast show, Big John @ Breakfast, since 2004.

A Ghetto Christmas Eve by Durel R. Patterson Pdf

This description of Christmas Eve has a slightly different view of one of the most joyous days of the year. It is a period when love, joy, peace and happiness is flowing through the air. Most children look forward to two days during the year, their birthday being one and Christmas Day, after receiving new toys and gifts on Christmas Eve, is the other. Each day brings much joy to the children as well as the parents. However, this view of Christmas Eve is not the typical view but it brings humor, laughter and joy to the young and old alike. Christmas Eve is Christmas Eve, but there’s nothing like “A Ghetto Christmas Eve.”

The War Outside My Window by Janet Elizabeth Croon Pdf

A remarkable account of the collapse of the Old South and the final years of a young boy’s privileged but afflicted life. LeRoy Wiley Gresham was born in 1847 to an affluent slave-holding family in Macon, Georgia. After a horrific leg injury left him an invalid, the educated, inquisitive, perceptive, and exceptionally witty twelve-year-old began keeping a diary in 1860—just as secession and the Civil War began tearing the country and his world apart. He continued to write even as his health deteriorated until both the war and his life ended in 1865. His unique manuscript of the demise of the Old South is published here for the first time in The War Outside My Window. LeRoy read books, devoured newspapers and magazines, listened to gossip, and discussed and debated important social and military issues with his parents and others. He wrote daily for five years, putting pen to paper with a vim and tongue-in-cheek vigor that impresses even now, more than 150 years later. His practical, philosophical, and occasionally Twain-like hilarious observations cover politics and the secession movement, the long and increasingly destructive Civil War, family pets, a wide variety of hobbies and interests, and what life was like at the center of a socially prominent wealthy family in the important Confederate manufacturing center of Macon. The young scribe often voiced concern about the family’s pair of plantations outside town, and recorded his interactions and relationships with servants as he pondered the fate of human bondage and his family’s declining fortunes. Unbeknownst to LeRoy, he was chronicling his own slow and painful descent toward death in tandem with the demise of the Southern Confederacy. He recorded—often in horrific detail—an increasingly painful and debilitating disease that robbed him of his childhood. The teenager’s declining health is a consistent thread coursing through his fascinating journals. “I feel more discouraged [and] less hopeful about getting well than I ever did before,” he wrote on March 17, 1863. “I am weaker and more helpless than I ever was.” Morphine and a score of other “remedies” did little to ease his suffering. Abscesses developed; nagging coughs and pain consumed him. Alternating between bouts of euphoria and despondency, he often wrote, “Saw off my leg.” The War Outside My Window, edited and annotated by Janet Croon with helpful footnotes and a detailed family biographical chart, captures the spirit and the character of a young privileged white teenager witnessing the demise of his world even as his own body slowly failed him. Just as Anne Frank has come down to us as the adolescent voice of World War II, LeRoy Gresham will now be remembered as the young voice of the Civil War South.
