This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... coat closed in front very much like that of the Roman priests. The dress of their women is of silk, modest in color, and a little plain cap. These sit together in their churches and spend practically all their time there in meditation; and, what is most strange is, that, whilst they meditate, they are obliged to make known to the. assembly their thoughts, good or bad, a practice which makes them oftentimes reveal horrible lasciviousness. There are very many churches here, but the most beautiful are that of the Episcopalians and that of the Freemasons. The last named is called First Lodge of America. In this beautiful and well governed city, no soldiers are to be seen, no barracks, no persons wearing the badge of officials; indeed peace is absolute, and good order reigns everywhere. The Republic exacts of its Citizens only slight tolls. The state revenues consist of a very reasonable tax on foreign merchandise; and only during war times are the Citizens subject to particular taxes; and in such circumstances every one is a soldier. Here man is free and enjoys true liberty. This is truly a land of simplicity, and here one may realize fully what it is to be a man. Oh. how many ways of thought! Oh. how many strange ideas are every day unfolded! Just think. One has made himself the founder of a religion, whose principle consists solely in fasting one day without doing anything, and beyond this one is allowed to commit every kind of excess. Poor fool! He does not find followers, because his religion is not of this world. Another, a very rich man has set up a new religion, the principles of which are not as yet known. I am let to understand, however, these principles are very strange and absolutely novel; he has already found proselytes, and has...

Frontier Mission by Walter Brownlow Posey Pdf

Religion is viewed here as the great cultural force which introduced and preserved civilization in the era of westward expansion from 1776 to the eve of the Civil War. In this first major study of religion in the South, Mr. Posey surveys the work of the seven chief denominations—Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, Cumberland Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Episcopal—as they developed in the frontier region that now comprises the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. The great challenges faced by the churches, Mr. Posey believes, were, first, the barbarism continually threatening a people isolated in a savage wilderness and, second, the materialism likely to engross minds preoccupied with the hard necessities of frontier survival. Many frontiersmen who had wandered across the mountains to escape the trammels and restrictions of an established society were distrustful of traditional religion, and some forgot their inherited beliefs entirely. To overcome these attitudes demanded new approaches. As organizations the churches faced great obstacles in attempting to minister to the folk on the moving frontier. One early answer was the camp meeting, and many of its features—an emphasis upon fervid emotion and individualism and the active participation and use of untrained people in religious services—continued as dominant elements in frontier religion. Indeed, those churches flexible enough to make use of these appeals were the most successful in spreading their beliefs. But inherent in the emotion and individualism was the danger of fragmentation, a danger most tragically evident when the slavery controversy split most southern denominations from their northern brethren. In education the churches fared better; even those that were at first skeptical of its benefits were by the time of the Civil War actively engaged in its support. But overall, the southern churches were hampered by too little money for the support of priests and preachers, too little communication between isolated congregations, and too little regard for service to the community. At the center of the churches' work—the care of congregations, the missions to the Indians and the Negroes, and the founding of educational institutions—were the frontier ministers. Mr. Posey pictures these men—stern and hard but full of zeal—as performing a stupendous task in their efforts to build and maintain spiritual life on the southern frontier.

Missouri by Anonim Pdf

Once considered a "foolish boondoggle" of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration, the Federal Writers' Project was initiated to allow employment opportunity to those associated with the arts during the Great Depression. The American Guide Series became the most successful venture, offering jobs to writers nationwide as each state endeavored to produce a comprehensive guidebook. Under the direction of Charles van Ravenswaay, former director of the Missouri Historical Society, Missouri: A Guide to the "Show Me" State was first published in 1941. Now, in a classic reprint, Missouri Historical Society Press restores this guidebook to its original splendor and returns it to the bookshelves. With a current road map included with the book, travelers can compare sights and tours described in the antiquated guide and see how they have developed or disappeared. As Walter A. Schroeder and Howard W. Marshall describe in the updated introduction, "The `unmarked, dirt road, impassable when wet, ' that we encounter in reading the WPA guide is no longer a hurdle to be negotiated in order to reach an out-of-the-way site." Due to nearly thirty thousand additional miles of paved roadway and endless gas station and motel chains, every corner of Missouri is now easily accessible. And, as Missouri Historical Society President Robert R. Archibald states in the foreword, "If you are the kind of traveler who has no intention of stirring from a comfortable chair near the reading lamp, this reprint is really all the equipment you require for a fascinating journey through the Missouri of the past."

The WPA Guide to Missouri by Federal Writers' Project Pdf

During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to the Show-Me State of Missouri literally shows the reader the virtues of this lovely region, by including vivid pictures of Art Deco skyscrapers in downtown Kansas City, farm scenes, the Ozark Mountains, and the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. It includes historical essays about the influence of these rivers on the state as well as Missouri’s important role in the American Civil War.

Opening the Ozarks by Walter A. Schroeder Pdf

As the oldest European settlement in Missouri, Ste. Genevieve was the funnel through which the eastern Ozarks (the 5,000 square miles beyond Ste. Genevieve's location on the Mississippi) was established. A magisterial account of the settlement of this area from 1760 through 1830, Opening the Ozarks focuses on the acquisition and occupation of land, the transformation of the environment, the creation of cohesive settlements, and the building of neighborhoods and eventually organized counties. The study begins with the French Creole settlement at Old Ste. Genevieve in the middle of the eighteenth century. It describes the movement of the French into the Ozark hills during the rest of that century and continues with that of the American immigrants into Upper Louisiana after 1796, ending with the Americanization of the district after the Louisiana Purchase. Walter Schroeder examines the cultural transition from a French society, operating under a Spanish administration, to an American society in which French, Indians, and Africans formed minorities.
