Circadian Rhythms in Nonhuman Primates by Frederick H. Rohles Pdf

Proceedings are presented of a symposium on Circadian Rhythms in Nonhuman Primates at the Second International Congress of Primatoloty, Atlanta, Georgia, July 2, 1968. It contains papers on both behavioral and physiological rhythms in which the chimpanzee, baboon, and nemistrina, rhesus, and cebus monkeys were subjects. As such it represents the first attempt to consolidate the current research in this area. (Author).

Biological Clocks by Oktav Salvenmoser,Brigitta Meklau Pdf

The emerging discipline denominated "chronoecology of behaviour" is the result of the interaction between the work of behavioural ecologists and chronobiologists -- those who explain biological rhythms on the basis of experimental studies carried out in the laboratory. Since the beginning of this century, this interaction has generated interest in understanding how biological rhythms behave in organisms living in their natural habitat. This approach requires field studies of rest/activity rhythms in order to obtain detailed hour/hour and day/day information about the possible effects of the modulation of certain environmental variables, such as photoperiod, temperature and the lunar sky, which may synchronise and/or mask behavioural activity. This book looks at the behavioural variations in non-human primates and Homo sapiens to find out how the circadian rhythm modulates behaviour and in what way social interaction influences the rhythms of circadian activity. This book also analyses the interaction between the circadian and immune systems, and explores the signal transduction pathways which could participate in this dialogue. The precise knowledge of this interaction might be extremely useful for the understanding of diseases development such as cancer. Other chapters in this book assess the quality of sleep in children and how it affects the rhythmical functions of the body. The comprehensive coverage of this topic is presented together with a general perspective from a child, caregiver and healthcare provider.

Primatology by Emil Potocki Pdf

Primates use four major modes of communication (i.e., visual, olfactory, tactile and vocal), and the ways they communicate depend on restrictions imposed by their habits and habitats. This book discusses past, current and potential future research in the wild and captivity, addressing some of the key questions in primate bioacoustics, identifying gaps in our knowledge, and also describing basic methods and equipment used in the study of primate bioacoustics. Also investigated are the changes of circadian rhythm of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity in non-human primates under stress and during ageing. This book presents data collected from gibbons in a sanctuary, a rehabilitation centre and also the wild highlighting the development of social skills and cognitive abilities. In addition, one of the dominant research areas in behavioural primatology pertains to assessments of the cognitive capacities of various non-human primate species. This book outlines studies that compare different methodologies and how those methodologies might contribute to differential learning and cognitive performance. Other chapters in this book examine the cognitive differences between humans and apes, review a powerful experimental methodology to determine the most likely acquisition modes responsible for primate "cultural" patterns, estimate home range use, activity patterns, and diet in woolly monkeys, and discuss the researchers role in preventing disease transmission between humans and apes.

Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century by Gene P. Sackett,Gerald Ruppenthal,Kate Elias Pdf

Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century describes how and why nursery rearing of primates can produce adaptable juveniles and adults for research, conservation, and display-educational purposes. The volume details the history of nursery rearing since the mid-19th century, the outcomes of varied nursery rearing methods, the contemporary goals of nursery rearing as well as reference data derived from species commonly reared in nursery or hand-feeding situations. Examples of the changing goals of nursery rearing covered in this volume are the need for biological containment in disease research, the production of specific pathogen-free colonies by removal of neonates from the mother, the production of phenotypes for genetic and molecular biology studies, and the breeding of endangered species for conservation or research purposes.

Electromagnetic Fields and Circadian Rhythmicity by Martin C. Moore-Ede,Scott Searcy Campbell,Russel J. Reiter Pdf

The idea of free (or laissez-faire) banking has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance in recent years. It is a radical idea that challenges much of what many monetary and banking scholars still take for granted - that banking is inherently unstable, that the banking system needs a lender of last resort or deposit insurance to defend it in a crisis, and that the government has to protect the value of the currency. Against this free banking sets an argument which is in essence very simple: if markets are generally better at allocating resources than governments, then what is different about money and the industry that provides it and why should they be treated differently?

Biological Rhythms by Jurgen Aschoff Pdf

Interest in biological rhythms has been traced back more than 2,500]ears to Archilochus, the Greek poet, who in one of his fragments suggests ",,(i,,(VWO'KE o'olos pv{}J.tos txv{}pW7rOVS ~XH" (recognize what rhythm governs man) (Aschoff, 1974). Reference can also be made to the French student of medicine J. J. Virey who, in his thesis of 1814, used for the first time the expression "horloge vivante" (living clock) to describe daily rhythms and to D. C. W. Hufeland (1779) who called the 24-hour period the unit of our natural chronology. However, it was not until the 1930s that real progress was made in the analysis of biological rhythms; and Erwin Bunning was encouraged to publish the first, and still not outdated, monograph in the field in 1958. Two years later, in the middle of exciting discoveries, we took a breather at the Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on Biological Clocks. Its survey on rules considered valid at that time, and Pittendrigh's anticipating view on the temporal organization of living systems, made it a milestone on our way from a more formalistic description of biological rhythms to the understanding of their structural and physiological basis.

Disorders of Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Parkinson's Disease by Aleksandar Videnovic,Birgit Högl Pdf

This book is the first to take into account the rapidly growing body of knowledge on the relation between sleep and PD. Gathering contributions from internationally recognized experts, it provides a unique source of in-depth information on sleep and circadian dysregulation in Parkinson’s disease. The book is divided into two parts: the first comprises chapters on normal sleep-wake homeostasis, followed by changes that occur in PD and discussions of available tools for the assessment of sleep-wake cycles in PD. In the second part, sleep and circadian disorders associated with PD are described in individual chapters, including sections on epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Controversies in the field, such as the relations between cognition and sleep, fatigue and sleepiness, and the potential impact of surgical therapies on sleep-wake cycles are discussed separately. The book closes with a chapter on future directions and unmet needs in the field of sleep, circadian biology and PD. This comprehensive text offers a readily accessible resource for clinicians and researchers alike, addressing the needs of neurologists, sleep and movement disorders specialists, and all trainees and allied health professionals involved in the care of patients affected by Parkinson’s disease.
