This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... one's things without apologizing or picking them up, and when I thank them for anything they look grimly amazed. I wish I could show them " a more excellent way." This hard greed, and the exclusive pursuit of gain, with the indifference to all which does not aid in its acquisition, are eating up family love and life throughout the West. I write this reluctantly, and after a total experience of nearly two years in the United States. Mrs. Chalmers is cleanly in her person and dress, and the food, though poor, is clean. Work, work, work, is their day and their life. They are thoroughly uncongenial. There is a married daughter across the river, just the same hard, loveless, moral, hard-working being as her mother. Each morning, soon after seven, when I have swept the cabin, the family come in for " worship." Chalmers wails a psalm to the most doleful of dismal tunes; they read a chapter round, and he prays. Sunday was a dreadful day. The family kept the commandment literally, and did no work. Worship was conducted twice, and was rather longer than usual. The man attempted to read a well-worn copy of Boston's Fourfold State, but shortly fell asleep, and they only woke up for their meals. It was an awful day, and seemed as if it would never come to an end. You will now have some idea of my surroundings. It is a moral, hard, unloving, unlovely, unrelieved, un-beautified, grinding life. These people live in a discomfort and lack of ease and refinement which seem only possible to people of British stock. What is this but the hideousness, the immense ennui, of the life on which we have touched so often, the life of our serious British Philistine, our Murdstone; that life with its defective type of religion, its narrow range of intellect and...

Civilization in the United States by Matthew Arnold Pdf

A thoughtful and considered analysis and discussion of American culture and character. This 1888 work begins with a lengthy piece on Ulysses S. Grant - a figure of considerable fascination in the U.S., and relatively uninteresting to Arnold's fellow countrymen - Matthew Arnold lays a critical eye on the booming post-war nation.

Civilization in the United States by Harold Stearns Pdf

Excerpt from Civilization in the United States: An Inquiry by Thirty Americans This book has been an adventure in intellectual co-operation. If it were a mere collection of haphazard essays, gathered together to make the conventional symposium, it would have only slight significance. But it has been the deliberate and organized outgrowth of the common efforts of like-minded men and women to see the problem of modern American civiliza tion as a whole, and to illuminate by careful criticism the special aspect of that civilization with which the individual is most familiar. Personal contact has served to correct over emphasis, and slow and careful selection of the members of a group which has now grown to some thirty-odd has given to this work a unity of approach and attack which it otherwise could not possibly have had. People's History of the United States by John Clark Ridpath Pdf

Excerpt from People's History of the United States: The Progress of Civilization in North America, From the Coming of the White Races to the Last Decade of the Nineteenth Century Two reasons may be assigned for dwelling with tolerable fullness upon this part of our career as a people. The first is the inherent interest which the early ages of our history possess and the second is the dependency of our larger development upon the Colonial planting. He who dwells with care on the matters presented in our age of discovery can hardly fail to find in the same such interest as the drama furnishes to the eager and curious mind. He who studies with attention the facts present in our Colonial epoch will discover in the same the fundamental conditions of the larger national life which has arisen therefrom. Ideology and Rhetoric by Bożenna Chylińska Pdf

The discovery of America and its further development into a modern state and a nation are the clear instance of how ideology and rhetoric are entwined and how they can encompass widely disparate viewpoints. The essays collected in this book address the topical issues of modern American Studies: cultural difference and otherness; gender, race and ethnicity; class and power. They represent new texts and contexts, approached through the revision, reevaluation, and reconfiguration of cannons, thus accommodating the expectations of the heterodox audience. Femininity reconsidered; an ideology of passing away in contemporary world of technical development; race captured within the framework of identity and gender; the rhetoric of blackness approached through racial exploitation; American conquest ideology revealed in a mission of Manifest Destiny; the 20th century assimilation rhetoric in the relations between Native Americans and the US federal government; the conservative ideology and apologetic rhetoric of the Antebellum South; the critique of the 21st century American legal system; the evolution of the presidential rhetoric which today addresses a large heterogeneous audience – all these topics impose a transnational interpretation of American culture which developed as a result of the cross-cultural transformation of European culture/cultures, moulded on American soil to finally become a unique reformulation of the very idea of America itself.
