In this world, money does not grow on trees, so he takes on the career of a merchant. Loading a cart with fancy goods, accompanied by his faithful horse and cunning cat, he starts his journey to a distant town. To get there safely he must cross a land of thieves. Once there, he will meet two wise men. One is a scientific magician. The other is the secretive chief of police. Pelagius learns the strange ways of that city and begins to sell his goods. But it is a vain and dangerous place. Indeed, it plans an invasion of his own home town. The magician has a love of football, so offers to join him on condition that they create a proper football team while preparing the town for defence. Helped by his wife (our hero married young) and the children of the local school, our friends must come up with one cunning plan after another to save them all. First, Pelagius crosses the sea to find allies. These turn out to be an alien tribe with a logic different to our own. The story builds to a climax when the two sides must battle each other. The Last Green Man by Ian Pillinger Pdf

“What is the meaning of the hidden wall painting in the abandoned Church? Who is Seth? Only the Martyn twins can answer these questions...” Fantasy and magical young adult tale, The Last Green Man, follows the story of the fourteen-year-old Martyn twins, Jenny and Jake. They are sent to live with their grandparents in a deserted and failing Wiltshire valley, where they must adapt to a very different lifestyle. As they explore their new surroundings, their unexpected arrival is noticed by a mysterious creature emerging from materials ‘borrowed’ from the nearby landscape. At first, this chaotic assemblage of twigs, leaves and mud is childlike. However, watching and waiting out of sight, the furtive ancient being develops as the twins realise they must face a bewildering sequence of lost secrets... The truth behind rediscovered local stories encourages the elusive creature to become ‘Seth’, a vagrant who has unsuccessfully appeared in the valley many times previously. Seth reveals himself to the twins as ‘The Last Green Man’, and despairs believing an evil local family will never be overthrown without human intervention. Will Jenny and Jake agree to help or should they stay well away from this creature? The Last Green Man will appeal to children, aged nine and above, who enjoy reading fantasy and magical fiction. It will also interest those who enjoy adventure stories.

Postanarchism by Saul Newman Pdf

What shape can radical politics take today in a time abandoned by the great revolutionary projects of the past? In light of recent uprisings around the world against the neoliberal capitalist order, Saul Newman argues that anarchism - or as he calls it postanarchism - forms our contemporary political horizon. In this book, Newman develops an original political theory of postanarchism; a form of anti-authoritarian politics which starts, rather than finishes, with anarchy. He does this by asking four central questions: who are we as subjects; how do we resist; what is our relationship to violence; and, why do we obey? By drawing on a range of heterodox thinkers including La Boétie, Sorel, Benjamin, Stirner and Foucault, the author not only investigates the current conditions for radical political thought and action, but proposes a new form of politics based on what he calls ontological anarchy and the desire for autonomous life. Rather than seeking revolutionary emancipation or political hegemony, we should affirm instead the non-existence of power and the ever-present possibilities of freedom. As the tectonic plates of our time are shifting, revealing the nihilism and emptiness of our political and economic order, postanarchism's disdain for power in all its forms offers us genuine emancipatory potential.

My Aunt Manya by José Patterson Pdf

“I am sick and tired of rocking and rolling about in this boat. Do you know what I want more than anything else in the world – I WANT TO STAND QUITE STILL ON DRY LAND!” Ay Aunt Manya is a period novel set in Russia at the end of the 19th century. The heroine, ten-year-old Sarah, lives unhappily with her much-hated stepmother. Sarah’s father has gone to live in New York with his sister Manya while he looks for a job. Sarah’s life changes overnight when Aunt Manya writes with news that her father has been killed in an accident. She sends her a boat ticket, some money and an offer of a home. Sarah’s family and friends are poor, Yiddish-speaking Russian Jews. Their lives are in constant danger from Cossacks – cruel Russian soldiers who, without warning, kill innocent Jews in attacks called Pogroms. When Sarah’s friends get word that a group of Cossacks is camped nearby, they lose no time in helping her to set out alone on the longest journey of her young life. My Aunt Manya is a heart-warming story of Sarah’s journey to America on the ‘other side of the world.’ She becomes an immigrant with just one goal – to live with her Aunt Manya in a free country. Sarah faces difficulties and dangers of the unknown with great courage and determination which, together with the hand of fate, combine to make this an unforgettable story. Readers aged 9-11 years who love adventure will be captivated by Sarah’s bravery.
