Classical Aerodynamic Theory by NASA,R. T. Jones Pdf

Aerodynamic theory was not prepared to offer assistance in the early development of the airplane. The scientific community, most qualified for action at the forefront of human endeavor, often turns out in practice to be surprisingly conservative. It is recorded that Lord Rayleigh expressed "not the smallest molecule of faith in aerial navigation, except by balloon." It was not until experiments such as those of Lilienthal and Langley and the successful powered flights of the Wright brothers that correct theories for the aerodynamic action of wings were developed. Following the successful demonstrations of the Wright brothers, aerodynamic theory developed rapidly, primarily in European laboratories. These developments we associate with the names Joukowsky, Kutta, Prandtl and his students, Munk, Betz, and Von Karman. It should not be forgotten that the writings of F. W. Lanchester provide many of the physical insights that were elaborated in these mathematical theories. Throughout World War I, these developments in aerodynamic theory remained virtually unknown in the U.S. However, in the early 1920's, the U.S. National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics undertook to translate or otherwise make available important works on aerodynamic theory in the form of NACA Technical Reports, Notes, and Memoranda, and to encourage similar effort in its own laboratory. At the present time, many of these old NACA documents are no longer readily available and it seems worthwhile to collect the most important early works under the title "Classical Aerodynamics." In most cases, the theories are explained in the author's own words and often with a degree of clarity unequalled in later interpretations. R. T. Theoretical and Computational Aerodynamics by Tapan K. Sengupta Pdf

Aerodynamics has seen many developments due to the growth of scientific computing, which has caused the design cycle time of aerospace vehicles to be heavily reduced. Today computational aerodynamics appears in the preliminary step of a new design, relegating costly, time-consuming wind tunnel testing to the final stages of design. Theoretical and Computational Aerodynamics is aimed to be a comprehensive textbook, covering classical aerodynamic theories and recent applications made possible by computational aerodynamics. It starts with a discussion on lift and drag from an overall dynamical approach, and after stating the governing Navier-Stokes equation, covers potential flows and panel method. Low aspect ratio and delta wings (including vortex breakdown) are also discussed in detail, and after introducing boundary layer theory, computational aerodynamics is covered for DNS and LES. Other topics covered are on flow transition to analyse NLF airfoils, bypass transition, streamwise and cross-flow instability over swept wings, viscous transonic flow over airfoils, low Reynolds number aerodynamics, high lift devices and flow control. Key features: Blends classical theories of incompressible aerodynamics to panel methods Covers lifting surface theories and low aspect ratio wing and wing-body aerodynamics Presents computational aerodynamics from first principles for incompressible and compressible flows Covers unsteady and low Reynolds number aerodynamics Includes an up-to-date account of DNS of airfoil aerodynamics including flow transition for NLF airfoils Contains chapter problems and illustrative examples Accompanied by a website hosting problems and a solution manual Theoretical and Computational Aerodynamics is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, and is also aimed to be a useful resource book on aerodynamics for researchers and practitioners in the research labs and the industry.

Aerodynamics of Wings and Bodies by Holt Ashley,Marten T. Landahl Pdf

Amid a welter of topics on the aeronautical engineering curriculum-hypersonic fluid mechanics, heat transfer, nonequilibrium phenomena, etc.-this concise text stands out as a rigorous, classroom-tested treatment of classical aerodynamic theory-indispensable background for aeronautical engineers and the foundation of current and future research. The present volume is also unique for its recognition of matched asymptotic expansions as a unifying framework for introducing boundary-value problems of external flow over thin wings and bodies. In addition, the book fully acknowledges the important role of high-speed computers in aerodynamics. After a short review of the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, the authors offer a fairly extensive treatment of constant-density inviscid flow. Chapter 3 deals with singular perturbation problems, presenting an extremely useful technique not to be found in most texts. Subsequent chapters give solid basic coverage of these topics: Chap. 4-Effects of Viscosity Chap. 5-Thin-Wing Theory Chap. 6-Siender-Body Theory Chap. 7-Three-Dimensional Wings in Steady, Subsonic Flow Chap. 8-Three-Dimensional Thin Wings in Steady Supersonic Flow Chap. 9-Drag at Supersonic Speeds Chap. 10-Use of Flow-Reversal Theorems in Drag Minimization Problems Chap. 11-Interference and Nonplanar Lifting Surface theories Chap. 12-Transonic Small-Disturbance Flow Chap. 13-Unsteady Flow Ideal as a primary or supplementary text at the graduate level, Aerodynamics of Wings and Bodies also offers working engineers a valuable reference to the resultsof modern aerodynamic research and a selection of new and useful analytical tools. Holt Ashley is Professor of Aeronautics/ Astronautics and Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Marten Landahl is in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at M.I.T. and in the Department of Mechanics, The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

The Elements of Aerofoil and Airscrew Theory by H. Glauert Pdf

More than half a century has elapsed since the first edition of The Elements of Aerofoil and Airscrew Theory appeared in 1926, a period in which massive advances have been made in the understanding and description of aerodynamic phenomena. Yet Glauert was an acknowledged master of his subject and his book remains the most lucid and best organised introduction to the fundamental principles of aerodynamics that has ever been written. This new paperback edition reprints the text of the second edition of 1947, with supplementary notes by H. B. Squire.

Theoretical and Applied Aerodynamics by J. J. Chattot,M. M. Hafez Pdf

This book covers classical and modern aerodynamics, theories and related numerical methods, for senior and first-year graduate engineering students, including: -The classical potential (incompressible) flow theories for low speed aerodynamics of thin airfoils and high and low aspect ratio wings. - The linearized theories for compressible subsonic and supersonic aerodynamics. - The nonlinear transonic small disturbance potential flow theory, including supercritical wing sections, the extended transonic area rule with lift effect, transonic lifting line and swept or oblique wings to minimize wave drag. Unsteady flow is also briefly discussed. Numerical simulations based on relaxation mixed-finite difference methods are presented and explained. - Boundary layer theory for all Mach number regimes and viscous/inviscid interaction procedures used in practical aerodynamics calculations. There are also four chapters covering special topics, including wind turbines and propellers, airplane design, flow analogies and hypersonic (rotational) flows. A unique feature of the book is its ten self-tests and their solutions as well as an appendix on special techniques of functions of complex variables, method of characteristics and conservation laws and shock waves. The book is the culmination of two courses taught every year by the two authors for the last two decades to seniors and first-year graduate students of aerospace engineering at UC Davis.
