This book arises out of an ESRC project devoted to an examination of the economic, social and cultural impacts of the service class on rural areas. The research was an attempt to document these impacts through close empirical work in a set of three rural communities, but something happened on the way. The authors found that the rural became a real sticking point. Respondents used it in different ways - as a bludgeon, as a badge, as a barometer - to signify many different things - security, identity, community, domesticity, gender, sexuality, ethnicity - nearly always by drawing on many different sources - the media, the landscape, friends and kin, animals. It became abundantly clear that the rural, whatever chameleon form it took, was a prime and deeply felt determinant of the actions of many respondents. Yet it was also clear that to the authors they possessed no theoretical framework that could allow them to negotiate the rural to deconstruct its diverse nature as a category. Rather each of the extended essays in the book is an attempt by each author to draw out one aspect of the rural by drawing on different traditions in social and cultural theory.

The British countryside is a national institution; most people aspire to live there, many people use it for leisure and recreation and we can all watch rural life played out on our television screen, read about it in novels or consume its imagery in art and cinematography. Die Themen Telearbeit und Telezentren wurden dabei unter mehreren Gesichtspunkten wissenschaftlich bearbeitet, die Bandbreite der Untersuchungen reicht von Arbeiten über die allgemeine Bedeutung von Telezentren für die Regionalentwicklung bis hin zu Analysen über die Arbeits- und Organisationsstrukturen von Telearbeit und Telezentren aus organisationspsychologischer Sicht. Während allerdings bei den meisten wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zu diesem Thema die theoretischen Einflüsse von Telearbeit und Telezentren auf den ländlichen Arbeitsmarkt im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stehen, ist es Ziel dieser Arbeit, die Diskussion über den Sinn oder Unsinn von Telearbeit und deren Beitrag zur wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung ländlicher Regionen auf eine solide empirische Basis zu stellen. Dazu werden case studies von Telezentren durchgeführt, die auf eine bereits mehrjährige praktische Erfahrung zurückblicken können. Als Ergebnis wird zuerst eine klare Typisierung von Formen von Telezentren entwickelt, denen dann typische geographische und interne Parameter des Erfolges zugewiesen werden konnten. Als Untersuchungsgebiet wurde Großbritannien gewählt, da dort europaweit einige der ersten Telezentren errichtet wurden und sich daher bereits ein großer Erfahrungsschatz zum Thema Telezentren und Telearbeit angesammelt hat. Das ist von umso höherer Bedeutung, als der Erfolg von Telezentren erst nach einem gewissen Zeitraum abzuschätzen ist, nachdem Kinderkrankheiten bekannt geworden sind und sich erfolgreiche bzw. weniger erfolgreiche Strategien eines Telezentrums herausbilden konnten. Da eine Typisierung von Telezentren und die geographischen und internen Erfolgsparameter eines Telezentrums bisher in der Literatur wenig behandelt worden sind, betritt diese Arbeit relatives Neuland und muss daher eher in die Tiefe gehen als in die Breite . Eine quantitative Untersuchung zu diesem Themenbereich wäre wegen der unzureichenden Vorkenntnisse über das Untersuchungsobjekt von geringem Wert. Daher stützt sich der empirische Teil dieser Arbeit auf Methoden der qualitativen Sozialforschung.
