TOURISM IN TAMIL NADU by S. Subramania Pillai Pdf

1. Introduction, 2. Spiritual Heritage Tourist Centres in Tamil Nadu, 3. Cultural Heritage Tourist Centres in Tamil Nadu, 4. Natural Heritage Tourist Centres in Tamil Nadu, 5. Fairs, Festivals and Folk Entertainments in Tamil Nadu, 6. Tourism Plant Facilities in Tamil Nadu, 7. Conclusion and Suggestions. - PREFACE: “Tourism in Tamil Nadu - Growth and Development” is a captivating theme. Man has been fascinated by travel and tourism from the earliest historical period. He always has had the urge to discover the unknown, to explore new and strange places, to seek changes of environment and to undergo new experiences. Travelling to achieve these ends is not new, but tourism is of a relatively modern origin. Tourism is distinguishable by its mass character from the travel undertaken in the past. This is largely a post-second world war phenomenon. Until recently only affluent people participated in tourism. Increased leisure, higher incomes and greatly enhanced mobility have combined to enable more people to participate in Tourism. Revolution in transport, technological progress and the emergence of a middle class with time and money to spare for recreation, has led to the growth of tourism—”the modern holiday industry”. Thus tourism is no longer the prerogative of a few but is an accepted part of life of a large number of people. India is one of the oldest civilizations with a kaleidoscopic variety and rich cultural heritage. For centuries India has been a centre of attraction for different people for different reasons. The ancient invaders viewed it as a goldmine with unlimited wealth to plunder; the learned were fascinated by its mystic spiritualism and profound philosophy; the uninitiated saw it as a land of naked fakirs and snake charmers; while the others were simply charmed by the sheer beauty of its natural attractions and amazing variety of its flora and fauna.

Climate Change and Risk in South and Southeast Asia by Devendraraj Madhanagopal,Salim Momtaz Pdf

This book, focuses on South and Southeast Asia, upgrades our understanding of the influence of multiple sociopolitical and governance factors on climate change and risks. Moving beyond science and technology-oriented discussions on climate change, it argues that the real solutions to climate change problems lie in societies, governance systems, non-state actors, and the power and politics underpinning these systems. It presents a range of detailed conceptual, empirical, and policy-oriented insights from different nations of South and Southeast Asia, including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Vietnam, Maldives, and Bhutan. The chapters bring forth critical discussions of climate change, covering a diverse range of topics including livelihoods, gender, community perspectives, relocation, resilience, local politics, climate change communication, governance, and policy responses. By investigating climate change vulnerabilities and as well as offering feasible solutions to the states and other non-state actors in responding to climate change and risks, this book deepens our existing knowledge of the social and political dimensions of climate change. With interdisciplinary perspectives, this book will appeal to all students, researchers, and scholars of environmental studies, geography, disaster studies, sociology, policy studies, development studies, and political science. It provides valuable reading to practitioners, policymakers, and professionals working in related fields.

Beach Processes and Nearshore Hydrodynamics of Dhanushkodi, Rameswaram, India by Usha Natesan,R. Vishnunath Pdf

This book focuses on understanding the shoreline dynamics, nearshore processes and sediment transport around Rameswaram Island and the cities of Dhanushkodi and Arichamunai. Rameswaram Island is located between the Gulf of Mannar on the south and Palk Bay on the north, between the southern tip of India and Sri Lanka, and is unique in terms of physical, chemical and biological processes. The Gulf of Mannar is established as a marine biodiversity conservation area by its richness of variety and variability of marine species such as corals, finfish, shellfish and other fishes. The island is predominantly influenced by four seasons: northeast monsoon, post-monsoon, summer and southwest monsoon; and the sedimentological and hydrodynamic conditions significantly change seasonally, resulting in the island’s responding in a different manner with each season. It also explains the physical forces and their impacts around these areas. Rameswaram Island has existed naturally for a long period of time even under the influence of different water masses of the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay. Understanding the regional natural phenomena is the only solution to carry out the best management practices to develop coastal constructions and modifications.
