Cold Zero by Christopher Whitcomb Pdf

Only 200 people have ever been in Christopher Whitcomb's elite branch of the F.B.I. The Hostage Rescue Team is its most highly trained and specialized squadron -- equivalent to the Navy's Seals and the Army's Delta Force -- charged with terrorist capture, hostage situations, and other large-scale emergencies in the U.S. and around the world. Whitcomb is the first HRT member ever to write about his experience. With breathtaking immediacy, Whitcomb describes the brutal training, the weapons and tactics, and the unbreakable camaraderie of the HRT. In short order, after joining HRT in 1991, Whitcomb was sent on missions to Ruby Ridge and Waco, and his frank assessment of those missions is must reading for anyone interested in modern law enforcement. Only rarely does a writer this accomplished have a life this dramatic. Cold Zero is a book of rare action and emotion, and one that introduces a remarkable new writer to the world.

Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold by Tom Shachtman Pdf

“A lovely, fascinating book, which brings science to life.” —Alan Lightman Combining science, history, and adventure, Tom Shachtman “holds the reader’s attention with the skill of a novelist” as he chronicles the story of humans’ four-centuries-long quest to master the secrets of cold (Scientific American). “A disarming portrait of an exquisite, ferocious, world-ending extreme,” Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold demonstrates how temperature science produced astonishing scientific insights and applications that have revolutionized civilization (Kirkus Reviews). It also illustrates how scientific advancement, fueled by fortuitous discoveries and the efforts of determined individuals, has allowed people to adapt to—and change—the environments in which they live and work, shaping man’s very understanding of, and relationship, with the world. This “truly wonderful book” was adapted into an acclaimed documentary underwritten by the National Science Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, directed by British Emmy Award winner David Dugan, and aired on the BBC and PBS’s Nova in 2008 (Library Journal). “An absorbing account to chill out with.” —Booklist

Cold Chemistry by Olivier Dulieu,Andreas Osterwalder Pdf

Recent years have seen tremendous progress in research on cold and controlled molecular collisions, both in theory and in experiment. The advent of techniques to prepare cold and ultracold molecules and ions, to store them in optical lattices or in charged quasicristalline structures, and to use them in crossed or merged beam experiments have opened many new possibilities to study the most fundamental aspects of molecular interactions. At the same time, theoretical work has made progress in tackling these problems and accurately describing quantum effects in complex systems, and in proposing viable options to control chemical reactions at ultralow energies. Through tutorials on both the theoretical and experimental aspects of research in cold and ultracold molecular collisions, this book provides advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and researchers with the foundations needed to understand this exciting field.

Cold Barrel Zero by Matthew Quirk Pdf

John Hayes is a Special Operations legend who went rogue on a deep-cover mission and betrayed his own soldiers. Disgraced and on the run, he returns to the United States to get back to his wife and daughter and take revenge on his accusers with a series of devastating attacks. Only one man can stop him: Thomas Byrne. He once fought alongside Hayes as a combat medic, but he gave up the gun. Now a surgeon, he moves from town to town, trying to forget his past, until he is called upon by a high-ranking government official to help capture the man he once called a friend. Hayes and Byrne were once as close as brothers, but with the fate of the nation hanging in the balance and nothing as it seems, both men must decide whom to trust -- and whom to betray. In a final, explosive battle for justice, they face off along a rifle's cold barrel. Cold Barrel Zero brings together the blistering pace of Lee Child, the nonstop action of Brad Thor, and the richly drawn characters and moral stakes of Daniel Silva. Nuclear plants by Maurizio Luigi Cumo Pdf

This book of the Publishing House of Sapienza University outlines the operative experience of a great number of nuclear power plants and devices of the nuclear fuel cycle. With main reference to nuclear plants of the so called third generation (Ill or Ill+, i.e. advanced ones) of the European Union and of Euratom research Centres the prospects of future plants of fourth generation (IV, years 2050s) are also described. Large advancements have been obtained by extended cooperation of EU with USA, Japan and connections with Russia, China, India, Canada and other Countries. After Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima-Daiichi (2011, 3 reactors) accidents with heavy consequences, people interest in nuclear energy decreased all over the world. This book examines in details such accidents to obtain safer designs Gen. IV reactors. In 2003 an initiative of the DOE (USA Department of Energy) launched the so called Generation IV International Forum with 13 Countries (USA, England, France, Canada, Japan, South Corea, South Africa, Argentine, Brasil, Switzerland, EU with Euratom) to design and realise the future reactors of Fourth Generation to substitute third generation reactors at the end of their operative life. Lectors have so a description of the evolution of future reactor types and of prospects that nuclear energy may offer to mankind. Maurizio Luigi Cumo is em. prof. of Nuclear Plants at the University of Rome Sapienza and is member of the Foundation Sapienza, Institution which gives prizes to Sapienza top students and may propose to Sapienza Administrative Council new researches to be undertaken. He was engaged in many international nuclear Institutions and Organisations. In years ‘80s he was engaged in the design of a small-medium reactor inherently safe called MARS (described in this book). Presently, he is in the group of senators and electors of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts of Salzburg, representing Italy, and is president of SIPS, the Historical (1839) Italian Society for the advancement of sciences.

Nuclear Engineering Handbook by Kenneth D. Kok Pdf

Nuclear power has, in recent years, undergone a major transformation, resulting in major technical developments and a new generation of nuclear scientists and engineers. A comprehensive book that reflects the latest nuclear technologies has been lacking—until now. The Nuclear Engineering Handbook is a response to this global resurgence of interest in commercial nuclear power. A broad overview of nuclear power and engineering and their limitless potential, this basic introduction to the field provides an in-depth discussion of power plants and extensive coverage of the nuclear fuel cycle, waste disposal, and related engineering technologies. Organized into three sections—Nuclear Power Reactors, Nuclear Fuel Cycle Processes and Facilities, and Engineering and Analytical Applications—this book addresses the entire nuclear fuel cycle and process. Topics include everything from the mining, milling, and enrichment of uranium and thorium fuel resources, to fuel fabrication, nuclear materials transportation, fuel reprocessing, and safe waste disposal. This all-encompassing volume discusses current analytical techniques related to nuclear engineering, addressing safety, heat transfer, shielding, thermo-hydraulics, and heat physics. Covering reactor operation and radiation protection, it also outlines the economic considerations involved in building new nuclear power stations instead of large fossil-fueled plants, and elaborates on concerns regarding the control of emissions from the latter. A review of past and current nuclear engineering capabilities, this valuable resource covers the gamut of crucial topics, including historical perspectives, a detailed technological review, and an assessment of the field’s future direction. It is an exceptional tool that will help readers to foster optimal understanding and use of nuclear power for electricity generation now and in the future.
