Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics by Martha A. Tucker,Nancy D. Anderson Pdf

This book is a reference for librarians, mathematicians, and statisticians involved in college and research level mathematics and statistics in the 21st century. We are in a time of transition in scholarly communications in mathematics, practices which have changed little for a hundred years are giving way to new modes of accessing information. Where journals, books, indexes and catalogs were once the physical representation of a good mathematics library, shelves have given way to computers, and users are often accessing information from remote places. Part I is a historical survey of the past 15 years tracking this huge transition in scholarly communications in mathematics. Part II of the book is the bibliography of resources recommended to support the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. These are grouped by type of material. Publication dates range from the 1800's onwards. Hundreds of electronic resources-some online, both dynamic and static, some in fixed media, are listed among the paper resources. Amazingly a majority of listed electronic resources are free.

The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Volume 4 (Part II) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Pdf

Published originally in 1809-1810, The Friend was revised in 1812, by public demand. In 1818, a three-volume rifacimento appeared in which Coleridge attempted to dispel obscurity, tie up loose threads of reasoning, and provide more mature apercus. Now, in the Collected Works, The Friend has been re-edited to return to Coleridge's 1818 text. His emendations, cuts, and marginal comments noted in six copies of the work, as well as manuscript additions and deletions, have been included as footnotes. The editor’s footnotes also elucidate sources and themes and provide translations of the many Latin and Greek passages. The entire periodical Friend is given as an appendix, with the 1812 revisions. Originally published in 1969. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Collected Papers by Armand Borel Pdf

This book collects the papers published by A. Borel from 1983 to 1999. About half of them are research papers, written on his own or in collaboration, on various topics pertaining mainly to algebraic or Lie groups, homogeneous spaces, arithmetic groups (L2-spectrum, automorphic forms, cohomology and covolumes), L2-cohomology of symmetric or locally symmetric spaces, and to the Oppenheim conjecture. Other publications include surveys and personal recollections (of D. Montgomery, Harish-Chandra, and A. Weil), considerations on mathematics in general and several articles of a historical nature: on the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, on N. Bourbaki and on selected aspects of the works of H. Weyl, C. Chevalley, E. Kolchin, J. Leray, and A. Weil. The book concludes with an essay on H. Poincaré and special relativity. Some comments on, and corrections to, a number of papers have also been added.

Collected Papers by John Rawls Pdf

John Rawls’s work on justice has drawn more commentary and aroused wider attention than any other work in moral or political philosophy in the twentieth century. Rawls is the author of two major treatises, A Theory of Justice (1971) and Political Liberalism (1993); it is said that A Theory of Justice revived political philosophy in the English-speaking world. But before and after writing his great treatises Rawls produced a steady stream of essays. Some of these essays articulate views of justice and liberalism distinct from those found in the two books. They are important in and of themselves because of the deep issues about the nature of justice, moral reasoning, and liberalism they raise as well as for the light they shed on the evolution of Rawls’s views. Some of the articles tackle issues not addressed in either book. They help identify some of the paths open to liberal theorists of justice and some of the knotty problems which liberal theorists must seek to resolve. A complete collection of John Rawls’s essays is long overdue.

The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Volume 13 by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Pdf

The manuscript of Coleridge's Logic is published here in its entirety for the first time, along with the texts of manuscripts that are directly related to it. Coleridge's plans to write about logic go back at least as far as 1803, but it was not until the 1820s that he undertook to write a book that would be of practical use to young men about to enter "the bar, the pulpit, and the senate." By that time the philosophy course he taught to classes of such young men had given them access to his thoughts, and he in turn benefited from their interest and enthusiasm. Coleridge wished to encourage his readers to think for themselves in a manner that was consistent and self-aware. He hoped to provide them with a system of logic "applied to the purposes of real life." His Logic differs from earlier English models in its emphasis on the psychology of thought and in its sceptical treatment fo the figures of the syllogism. Here the influence of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason predominates. The Logic is also concerned with the psychology of language--indeed Coleridge thought of calling the book "The Elements of Discourse"--and with the philosophical and theological implications of different semantic theories. Here he was sustained by a vigorous English tradition and aided by his own subtle experience of the relationship between thoughts and words. The Logic is an introduction to thinking about thought. It touches on a variety of topics--education, the origin of language, the importance of defining terms, subjective and objective truth, the meaning of abstraction, understadning and reason, conception and perception, self-consciousness, intuition, space and time, cause and effect, mathematical evidence, and the mind's emancipation from the senses--and behind these characteristic concerns Coleridge's more comprehensive views may be freshly glimpsed. J.R. de J. Jackson is Professor of English at the University of Toronto. He is the author of Method and Imagination in Coleridge's Criticism and the editor of Coleridge: The Critical Heritage (both published by Routledge & Kegan Paul). Bollingen Series LXXV Originally published in 1981. The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg, Volume II by Rosa Luxemburg Pdf

Rosa Luxemburg’s theoretical masterpiece The second volume in Rosa Luxemburg’s Complete Works, entitled Economic Writings 2, contains a new English translation of Luxemburg’s The Accumulation of Capital: A Contribution to the Economic Theory of Imperialism, one of the most important works ever composed on capitalism’s incessant drive for self-expansion and the integral connection between capitalism and imperialism. This new translation is the first to present the full work as composed by the author. It also contains her book-length response to her critics, The Accumulation of Capital, Or, What the Epigones Have Made Out of Marx’s Theory—An Anti-Critique. Taken together, these two works represent one of the most important Marxist studies of the globalization of capital. Also included is an essay on the second and third volumes of Marx’s Capital, which had originally appeared as an unattributed chapter in Franz Mehring’s book Karl Marx. Thank you to David Gaharia for helping to support the translation of this book.
