Cometa - Last Queen of Sheba by Gisela Pdf

Cometa-Last Queen of Sheba, a novel of the NEW ERA by GISELA (Gisela: nom-de-plume for the author - AA DaSilva) is sort of compilation of nine big essays which emerged from 1999 to 2004, when the author studied Languages and Psychology at London Guildhall and Alcal de Henares (Madrid). Only two of those 9 essays were written in English, however English Language appeared as most appropriate for the first attempt at developing something as a new thesis on the sweet illusion of happiness. Its a rough attempt (awkward at places, along these 9 long chapters) to depict a clear-cut picture of those quixotesque characters who try to weigh-up about the rat-race society and any possibility of transcendence in human life. The hug of Mother-Earth as Rod seems to advocate or, the Philosophy of the day as Pablo preaches it from behind the bar of his Caf Can this be enough help, along this nebulous adventure we call LIFE? Perhaps Portuguese originals (22 chapters, under the title Cometa-em busca da felicidade), which is soon expected to be handed to publishers, can bring more clarity to what we mean by sweet illusion of happiness. Cometa which is Spanish for kite should be understood as conscience, innocence or just soul... a bit like any last ray of hope to the old and decrepit King Solomon with no more hope for happiness than some last sweet look from his Queen of Sheba. ----------- Me? est? p????s???? ?s da??t?? Nothing is as inspirational as death, allegedly from Diogenes, 450 BC: this could be the very appropriate caption for Cometa-Last Queen of Sheba, but it just appears as a logo for the chapter II. Cadunt altis de montibus umbrae when twilight replaces sunshine, from Publius Ovidius Naso (40 BC 20AD) is a poetic quotation from Metamorphosis, opening chapter V of Cometa-Last Queen of Sheba. Circumstance and leitmotiv: September 11, early afternoon in Lisbon waiting for the train to Madridthose images from TV took my attention from Rebelion de las Masas and made me very sad indeed. ? Typing error: on page IX where it reads 1942 it should read 2042. http://pt.www.netlog.com/tonywriter http://www.facebook.com/#!/Tonywriter1946

A Budget of Paradoxes by Augustus De Morgan Pdf

A Budget of Paradoxes, originally published in 1915, is mathematician Augustus De Morgan's most accessible and entertaining work. Well-known for his wit, De Morgan takes aim at those people he calls "paradoxers," which in modern terms would most closely resemble crackpots. Paradoxers, however, are not crazy, necessarily-rather, they hold views wildly outside the accepted sphere. If you believed the world was round when everyone else knew that it was flat, you would be a paradoxer. In this book, De Morgan reviews a number of books from his own library written by such "crackpots" who claim to have solved a great many of the puzzles of mathematics and science, including squaring a circle, creating perpetual motion, and overcoming gravity. Each is thoroughly put in his place in ways both entertaining and informative to readers. Skeptics, students of science, and anyone who likes pondering a puzzle will find this book a delightful read. British mathematician AUGUSTUS DE MORGAN (1806-1871) invented the term mathematical induction. Among his many published works is Trigonometry and Double Algebra (1849).

Tommaso Campanella by Germana Ernst Pdf

A friend of Galileo and author of the renowned utopia The City of the Sun, Tommaso Campanella (Stilo, Calabria,1568- Paris, 1639) is one of the most significant and original thinkers of the early modern period. His philosophical project centred upon the idea of reconciling Renaissance philosophy with a radical reform of science and society. He produced a complex and articulate synthesis of all fields of knowledge – including magic and astrology. During his early formative years as a Dominican friar, he manifested a restless impatience towards Aristotelian philosophy and its followers. As a reaction, he enthusiastically embraced Bernardino Telesio’s view that knowledge could only be acquired through the observation of things themselves, investigated through the senses and based on a correct understanding of the link between words and objects. Campanella’s new natural philosophy rested on the principle that the books written by men needed to be compared with God’s infinite book of nature, allowing them to correct the mistakes scattered throughout the human ‘copies’ which were always imperfect, partial and liable to revisions. It is in the light of these principles that he defended Galileo’s right to read the book of nature while denouncing the mistake of those – be they Aristotelian philosophers or theologians – who wanted to stop him from carrying on his natural investigations. However, Campanella maintained that the book of nature, far from being written in mathematical characters, was a living organism in which each natural being was endowed with life and a degree of sensibility that was appropriate for its preservation and propagation. Nature as a whole was an organism in which each single part was directed towards the common good. This is the reason why Campanella thought that nature had to be regarded as an ideal model for any political organisation. Political structures were often ruled by injustice and violence precisely because they had departed from that natural model. This book charts Campanella’s intellectual life by showing the origin, development and persistence of some of the fundamental tenets of his thought.

Medieval Combat by Hans Talhoffer Pdf

“[A] remarkable how-to . . . offers freeze-frame instructions on medieval martial arts using swords, shields, poleaxes, daggers and wrestling” (Publishers Weekly). Written by German fencing master Hans Talhoffer in 1467, this book illustrates the intricacies of the medieval art of fighting, covering both the “judicial duel” (an officially sanctioned fight to resolve a legal dispute) and personal combat. Combatants in the Middle Ages used footwork, avoidance, and the ability to judge and manipulate timing and distance to exploit and enhance the sword’s inherent cutting and thrusting capabilities. These skills were supplemented with techniques for grappling, wrestling, kicking and throwing the opponent, as well as disarming him by seizing his weapon. Every attack contained a defense and every defense a counterattack. Talhoffer reveals the techniques for wrestling, unarmored fighting with the long sword, poleaxe, dagger, sword and buckler, and mounted combat. This unparalleled guide to medieval combat, illustrated with 268 contemporary images, provides a glimpse of real people fighting with skill, sophistication and ruthlessness. This is one of the most popular and influential manuals of its kind. “This superb treatise, amply illustrated, provides valuable insight into the real world of medieval combat. Magnificent!” —Books Monthly

So Long a Letter by Mariama Bâ Pdf

Written by award-winning African novelist Mariama Bâ and translated from the original French, So Long a Letter has been recognized as one of Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20th Century. The brief narrative, written as an extended letter, is a sequence of reminiscences —some wistful, some bitter—recounted by recently widowed Senegalese schoolteacher Ramatoulaye Fall. Addressed to a lifelong friend, Aissatou, it is a record of Ramatoulaye’s emotional struggle for survival after her husband betrayed their marriage by taking a second wife. This semi-autobiographical account is a perceptive testimony to the plight of educated and articulate Muslim women. Angered by the traditions that allow polygyny, they inhabit a social milieu dominated by attitudes and values that deny them status equal to men. Ramatoulaye hopes for a world where the best of old customs and new freedom can be combined. Considered a classic of contemporary African women’s literature, So Long a Letter is a must-read for anyone interested in African literature and the passage from colonialism to modernism in a Muslim country. Winner of the prestigious Noma Award for Publishing in Africa.
