Common Sense Mathematics by Ethan D. Bolker,Maura B. Mast Pdf

Common Sense Mathematics is a text for a one semester college-level course in quantitative literacy. The text emphasizes common sense and common knowledge in approaching real problems through popular news items and finding useful mathematical tools and frames with which to address those questions. We asked ourselves what we hoped our students would remember about this course in ten year’s time. From that ten year perspective thoughts about syllabus–“what topics should we cover?"–seemed much too narrow. What matters more is our wish to change the way our students' minds work–the way they approach a problem, or, more generally, the way they approach the world. Most people “skip the numbers" in newspapers, magazines, on the web and (more importantly) even in financial information. We hope that in ten years our students will follow the news, confident in their ability to make sense of the numbers they find there and in their daily lives. Most quantitative reasoning texts are arranged by mathematical topics to be mastered. Since the mathematics is only a part of what we hope students learn, we've chosen another strategy. We look at real life stories that can be best understood with careful reading and a little mathematics.

Common Sense Implementation Of Qms In The Clinical Laboratory: A Software Guided Approach by Masahiko Amano,Robert Bredt,Mark A Colby,Trent Freeman Pdf

This book explains how SaaS works and lists and describes many common misconceptions and pitfalls that laboratories have about implementing Quality Management Systems (QMS). By walking the reader through all ISO 15189 Standards and describing each in detail, we can show how to implement them in common sense and meaningful ways. This book demonstrates to clinical laboratories how to combine the rigor of international standards with the inherent benefits of contemporary cloud-based software systems so that they can involve the entire laboratory in making quality a shared habit.

Artificial Intelligence by Ela Kumar Pdf

AI is an emerging discipline of computer science. It deals with the concepts and methodologies required for computer to perform an intelligent activity. The spectrum of computer science is very wide and it enables the computer to handle almost every activity, which human beings could. It deals with defining the basic problem from viewpoint of solving it through computer, finding out the total possibilities of solution, representing the problem from computational orientation, selecting data structures, finding the solution through searching the goal in search space dealing the real world uncertain situations etc. It also develops the techniques for learning and understanding, which make the computer able to exhibit an intelligent behavior. The list is exhaustive and is applied now a days in almost every field of technology. This book presents almost all the components of AI like problem solving, search techniques, knowledge concepts, expert system and many more in a very simple language. One of the unique features of this book is inclusion of number of solved examples; in between the chapters and also at the end of many chapters. Real life examples have been discussed to make the reader conversant with the intricate phenomenon of computer science in general, and artificial intelligence in particular. The book is primarily developed for undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students.

Commonsense Guide to Current Affairs by Vincent Frank Bedogne,Marcy Jean Everest Pdf

From clones, family, abortion, terrorism, and the concept of the collective to economics, nuclear power, cap and trade, renewable energy, and the politics of climate change, Everest and Bedogne do something much needed and remarkably absent in today's media. They strip away the layers of liberal and conservative ideology to look at the most talked about topics of our time from the standpoint of what the politicians have forgotten--common sense. Brought to light by logic, history, and science, the book filters the issues that in today's world every citizen, student, and educator needs to understand through what we know to be sound--that which we have gained through our day-to-day trials--our all-too-often repressed ability to see things in a practical and matter-of-fact way.

Foundations of Reasoning under Uncertainty by Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier,Luis Magdalena,Manuel Ojeda-Aciego,José-Luis Verdegay,Ronald R. Yager Pdf

Uncertainty exists almost everywhere, except in the most idealized situations; it is not only an inevitable and ubiquitous phenomenon, but also a fundamental sci- ti?c principle. Furthermore, uncertainty is an attribute of information and, usually, decision-relevant information is uncertain and/or imprecise, therefore the abilities to handle uncertain information and to reason from incomplete knowledge are c- cial features of intelligent behaviour in complex and dynamic environments. By carefully exploiting our tolerance for imprecision and approximation we can often achieve tractability, robustness, and better descriptions of reality than traditional - ductive methods would allow us to obtain. In conclusion, as we move further into the ageofmachineintelligence, theproblemofreasoningunderuncertainty,in other words, drawing conclusions from partial knowledge, has become a major research theme. Not surprisingly, the rigoroustreatment of uncertaintyrequiressophisticated - chinery, and the present volume is conceived as a contribution to a better und- standing of the foundations of information processing and decision-making in an environment of uncertainty, imprecision and partiality of truth. This volume draws on papers presented at the 2008 Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty (IPMU), held in Malaga, ́ Spain, or- nized by the University of Mal ́ aga. The conference brought together some of the world’s leading experts in the study of uncertainty.
